I I ll ' I ' ' ' - , , IA I . l . , . , i '74 9' 0 Qt Svrhnnl n aieuivw Lusten my readers and I Barton the Spartan wull tell you the story of the three interesting years whuch thus years graduates have spent at Lake 1 vuew Hugh Twas a gay September day when the class of 45 then a bunch of very bashful and tumud sophomores entered hugh school un the old buuldung B A sides thus part beung new to them they were yet to have another new ex peruence that of attending school for only a half day because of crowded condutuons Real hugh school actuvutues began wuth homecomung festuvutues Then one of the bugger thungs un the Sophs luves the J I-lop theur first formal I really got a bang out of the next bug dance whuch was the Girl Date Boy All the gals grabbed an unsu spectung fellow and off we went to the dance sponsored by the Girls Athletic Club whose membership was mostly sophomore gurls Later un the year rumors were confirmed and we knew that we would have a new school the next year The day we marched un a parade out to Woodrow Avenue to lay the new buuldungs cornerstone I put on my best suut of armor and clanked right along wuth the rest of the kids Clumaxung the years actuvutues was the Senuor Prom whuch was attended by many sophs now hardened to the socual routune of , all kunds of dances The prom was followed by baccalaureate and commencement and so the year ended leavung that year s sophs 5 ' class for the year l943 l944 The next September found the new junior class enterung along wuth e new sophs and senuors a brand new school lt could be added here that because of the shortage of metal they were obluged to hang coats on hooks un the halls and leave books on shelves overhead Thus locker sutuatuon was not a duffucult one for me as I always wear my suut of armor ln keepung with the new sutuatuon a new system for electuons was developed It was patterned after the natuonal electuons and was a source of great unterest to all Class officers were elect ed and thus uunuor class really went to town establushung themselves as no small factor un the success of the school year The homecomung celebratuon was something to be remembered that year wuth many alumnu , a Q returning to take part un the festuvutues Up untul thus tume I had always stayed un v - the background and observed what was doung I It was now that I made my decusuon to wrute and TZ publush my furst book the Log It was a real v ' success especually sunce ut was sponsored by the IQ44 senuors and even that years uunuors helped me out In fact I was so satusufed wuth - my efforts that I m makung ut an annual actuvuty Page Twenty eught I X ' I I I I W ' . . .I I . .' . . February came and the sunsors put on a wonderful J I-lop The decora tsons sn keeping wsth the winter theme displayed many talents of the com sng sensor class Ushersng sn the spring season they sponsored the Girl Date Boy dance on April Fool s day Next came the all school play What a Lsfe whsch I thought was an excellent comedy Had st not been for my prestige I doubtlessly would have been asked to leave because when I laughed my armor made a good deal of l lOISS -C Graduation actsvstses that year took on a new mean sng for this class They were next sn lsne for graduation Stscksng to tradstson soon after the Sensor Prom and Baccalaureate they sponsored the Junior Sensor Recep tson for the sensors after the commencement exercsses So ended that year and now the bashful tsmsd sophomores of l942 1943 were readsly prepared to take over thesr newly appointed place as Lakeview hsgh school sensors This year s sensors recesv thesr responssbslstses on nearly the first day of the school year The elections took place and I found that the sensors had taken school and were really on the ball S fa I can always rely on the home coming activities to Isven up any school year and this year s home coming dsdn t betray my plans for they were one of the best sn many years Work on the Log was begun early this year so that I wouldn t forget a thsng and I saw this class ued its way into the elsmsnatson tournaments Football season came and went and some of the fellows thus ended thesr high school sports careers whsle others continued to par 04 tscspate sn the other sports basketball baseball track tennss and other msnor ac tsvstses llslx The partsally tradstsonal Thanksgiving and Christmas dances were events of the year wsth many other dances The fsrst Band Follies sn Lake vsew s history was presented sn February whsch shows that even the band has pro gressed to unlsmsted areas The week after Easter the Sensors presented the Girl Date Boy dance Later sn May came their Sensor Prom Class day proved to be a wonderful expersence for me I accompansed the sensors to thesr breakfast and later we went on a class day pscnsc The Sensor play Baccalaureat Commencement and the Junior Sensor Reception fol D o lowed sn rapsd succession And so I fsnd myself at the end of my story I have told you a lsttle of our high school sn revsew sn the next few pages I have attempted to sllustrate this years hap pensngs I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I have ensoyed gather ing them Ssncerely Barton the Spartan Page Twenty nine . I . - C. . 1 1 - I 1 I ' ' Our athletic board held lfS first meeting of the year late In August to plan the football season events for the coming fall Being of a somewhat curlous nature l was more than Interested when school with Its games, pep assemblies and fun began In September This year our homecoming week of November eleventh was one of the most complete and elaborate of felebrations In the school s history This festive occasion Included a snake dance on Thursday night the annual brown lug game on Armistice Day and an Informal dance that same evening at which time the queen was crowned On December eleventh the annual football banquet was held In the school gymnasium for the football players and their fathers Charles Bachman Michigan State College football coach was the guest speaker for the evening and Jack Breslin former Lakeview athlete and Michigan State College football star was the guest of honor Mothers from the PSTO prepared the evening meal and the senior girls served Both major and mInor letters were awarded at this time by Coach Baldus The good sportsmanship cup was also presented to Bob Rutherford Movies of Michigan State College starring Jack Breslin In action as a fullback were shown phones were purchased by the board for the use of the cheerleaders Bankboards were secured for basketball practice and a large sign was placed on the school grounds to advertise the Spartan athletic contests New basketball uniforms and other athletic equipment were selected and purchased by the board Purple and white was chosen as the official colors of l.akevIew High School During the basketball season It became a policy of the board to distribute the after game dances to VOFIOUS student organizations On several occasions refreshments were served to the players following the games SEATED Edna Mae Shafer Secy Janet Stadle Pres Jules Bale Treas L Baldus Adviser STANDING R Katz Second Vice Pres L LCNX Erst Vice President Athletir Baath . u . b I . Every fourth hour when I walked down the hall to Mr Thomas offuce I heard a great clamor from the durectuon of the gym So one day I thought I d see what the racket was To my surpruse I duscovered ut to be our outstandung hugh school band under the capable durectuon of Mr Reed At the football games the band gave us some splendud performances whuch were led by our three charmung mauorettes Joanne Jones Mary Moran and Vurgunua Rouse and our versatule drum major Harley Beebe The band also played for our basketball games A musucal quuz fashuoned after the Kay Kyser program was presented by the band un De cember In the latter part of February the group put on an exceptuonally well done Band Follues for the students and parents Partucupants were selected from many hugh school uunuor hugh and grade school entrants early un February Jonnue Elwood s band was the featured attractuon The proceeds of the program were used to purchase new band unuforms if 3 zfianh Allnllieuzu Last February 28 I went helmet un hand to the furst Band Follues program that Lakevuew has presented The event was sponsored by the band and was a source of great entertaunment for all those un attendance Suttung un the front row I was able to get a fune vuew of all the acts rangung from hula dancung and tom tom beatung to a magucuan act Other dancung tap dancung sungung monologues and Jon Bausch was master of ceremonues under d rector of the fune band whuch provuded many program Thus us the type of thung I luke ut shows that ment they pour out Schubert the next they are armor' Page Eughty acts un the show were roller skatung acrobatuc comedy acts hus stage name of Jonnue Elwood and was also hot and rhythmuc numbers to pep up the the band us a pretty versatule bunch-one mo swungung boogue to the rhythm of my clunkung , .
