a 'A - La Chotte 1 THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO “DOC” FORD, A FRIEND OF STUDENTS. Superintendent Dr. James Ford, more commonly and affectionately known to Lakeview High School students and members of the community for the past 16 years os Doc Ford, has resigned ot the end of the 1986-87 school year. Dr. Ford has occepted a position in the Ludington School system. He will be missed by all who hove come in contact with him over the past 16 years. In the early 70 s, o friend of Doc Ford's had complimented Lakeview so highly, that when Ooc heard of a principalship open here, he con- tacted his friend to make sure his compliments were well founded. With added reassurance, Doc visited Lakeview, and fell in love with the small town. Doc, his wife, Doris, and their 3 children, Julie, Steve, and Polly moved to Lakeview. The children have since grown up and moved away. Doc has seen the school undergo some changes during these past yeors. Vocational programs were underway, but with Doe’s help, they were set up so they would meet state requirements for state vocational certification. Another change took ploce. In 1980 Ford became superinten- dent of Lakeview Community Schools. At the time he assumed the position he olso assumed a school district with financial problems. With help from the community, school employees, and others, Doc has been ot the helm os Lakeview Community Schools has overcome those problems ond has rebuilt to the point of being better staffed with more program offerings, and also will see performance objectives supplied to parents to give them an overview of their child's years in Lokeview's school system. This project had been in plonning for 5 years. Structurally Ford has seen the Elementary school odd 5 rooms, some middle school renovations, and additional upgrading of all school facilities. Doc has been cooch to mony athletes at Lakeview. He has coached girls volleyball for 5 yeors, girls track for 5 years, as well os having coached in other sports during the past 16 yeors. Mony of Lakeview's future athletes will miss his love of sports. Doc's support, guidance, and genuine interest in the students here at Lakeview High School through all the years won't ever be forgotten. We wish you the best. Doc. WE WILL MISS YOU!!! by Craig Jensen 2 Dedication Every adult needs a child to teach, it's the way adults learn. Frank A. Clark STAFF Staff 3 4? Dan Correll, Advisor The 1987 laChatte yearbook staff was a small but effective one. Consisting of twelve members, the staff worked hard and met every deadline. Much credit must be acknowledged to their hard work and efforts. Sereva Bowser, Co-editor computer, covered the entire aspect of copy for the 1987 LaChatte. Senior member, Dawn Landis wos a true credit to the staff. She is reliable, dependable, and con- stantly striving for excellence. Many thanks must be given to all the Seniors: Jerry Schober, Kelli Nisonger, Linda Hadrich, and Steve Reyes. Junior staff members also contributed much to make this yearbook successful. They are as follows: Borb Mortin, John Schwandt, and Ed Mahan. The sole Sophomore on the staff was Sue Kinee. Without the help of Ben Wardwell, Chief photographer, there could be no yearbook. Almost every picture you will find in the 1987 year- book, as well as the 1986 yearbook, was taken by Ben. Many thanks to Ben, for an excellent job; we couldn't have done it without you. And to all the staff, thanks so much for all your work. You made the difference in this yearbook and best of luck to the returning staff. Yearbook editor. Coro Colon, hard ot work os olwoys. U2's tour of 87 was the biggest in the industry while Bon Jovi's third album, Slippery When Wet', went , thus assuring them of a promising future. Van Halen faced o change in their lead singer spot when David Lee Roth pursued a solo career with his own band that contained such notables as Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan. In Roth's place for Van Halen came Sammy Hagor. With Hagar Van Halen produced a new album for 1986 called '5150'. Journey also had some changes with the departing of drummer Steve Smith and bassist Ross Valory. Bob Seger's 86-87 tour may have been his last while die hard rockers like Deep Purple and Bad Company continued hopeful comebacks. It took Boston eight years to release their third album entitled Third Stage'. But some found it worth the wait. Other bands to hit the charts for the first time included Beastie Boys with Fight for Your Right (to party) and Poison with “Talk Dirty to Me . Movies brought about hits in the music industry. Ben E. King's “Stand By Me was reborn with help from the movie of the same title. ‘Top Gun’ contained such hits as “Take My Breath Away by Berlin and “Danger Zone’’ by Kenny Loggins. Other movies that drew attention were Hoosiers', ‘Nightmare on Elm Street Part III’, and Platoon’. The fashion trends in the past have gone in cycles from mini skirts to long skirts, bell bottoms to tapered pants, and feathered roach clips to bows. Now, one could wear almost anything to be in style. The more popular fashion trends of 1987 are hair bows, faded Guess jeans, suspenders hanging from jeans, and hair bonona clips. Nobody really knows why people wear their suspenders hangning from their jeans. Junior Teri Nelson com- mented, “They look better down!’’ By Cinnamon Culey In 1987 a law was passed raising the speed limit from 55 mph to 65 mph for most major highways. There was heated debate as to whether radar detectors should be banned. The radar ban was eventually ruled out. The 55 mph speed limit was initiated 10 years ago to con- serve gas. It was decided that the old limit was now obsolete and steps were taken to change it. Jerry Schaber, an LHS senior, commented, “I'm in total favor of the 65 mph speed limit. New cars get better gas mileage and are more efficient now-a-days, the speed limit should be uniform on all roods.'' 130 Time Capsule 13671650 The 1986-87 season was an exciting one in sports! In basketball the LA Lakers were the world champions. In baseball, the New York Mets pulled out an amazing comeback to win the 1986 world series. In football, the New York Giants finished off their ex- cellent season by pounding the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI. In hockey, the Edmonton Oilers continued their dynasty by winnning the Stanley Cup. In tennis, Boris Becker and Martinal Navratilova won the Wimbledon Tennis Cup. by Jerry Schaber The American backed Contra rebels have continued to fight against the Sandanisto controlled Communist government in Nicaragua throughout the 1986-87 school year. Most Americans are unsure of the details in the Contra situation, but some of those who are informed fear that we may be getting ourselves into another Vietnam. Lakeview High School students should be particularly con- cerned with Nicaragua. If this does develop into a more serious problem, graduating students are of an eligible age to be joining the military to aid our country. Cinnamon Culey, an LHS junior reflected, This conflict could turn into another Vietnam and I have family members in the Armed Forces that could be sent down there to fight. We do not need another memorial to prove that Americans are brave and will help anybody out in their time of crisis. by Linda Hodrich Tim. Copy 13!
