National News 1 A Wave for Friends— Cuban refugees waved to Cuban exiles on shore as their coast guard cutter approached Key West last fall. Such emotional scenes occurred frequently after Castro announced his “open door’’ policy, allowing certain groups of Cubans to leave his dictatorship. 2 Pioneer in Space— Astronaut Edward White stepped from his Gemini IV space capsule and into the void of space last June. Maj. James McDivitt, his companion on a 3! 2-day orbital flight, had to coax White back into the capsule after he had traveled 20 minutes sus¬ pended from Gemini IV. Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad were the next space twins to orbit the earth. They completed their 8-day flight in Gemini V during August. 3 Medicare Bill Signed —President Johnson signed the Medicare Bill into law July 30 with former President Truman at his side. Witness¬ ing the event that had far-reaching effects on Social Security benefits for the elderly were (left to right) Lady Bird Johnson, Vice President Humphrey and Bess Truman. The ceremony was held in Truman Library in Independence, Mo. 4 Temporary Mood— Dodgers Manager Walter Alston’s mood of .de¬ jection after the Minnesota Twins won the sixth World Series game did not last long. The Dodgers emerged victorious in the 7th game and captured the pennant. 5 Double Space Spectacular —Astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford got this view of the Gemini 7 spaceship December 15 while traveling in their Gemini 6 craft for their historic rendezvous adven¬ ture. Schirra and Stafford rode their red-hot. craft back to earth the following day, but Gemini 7 completed a 14-day mission before its re-entry. Making the longest and most significant voyage in space in Gemini 7 were Prank Borman and James Lovell, Jr. 6 Plea for Peace —Pope Paul VI stood before the United Nations General Assembly in New York on October 4 to deliver his plea for f s | |H i II I m 8 | I .111 R § 2 1 • IRtM W La Chatte 1966 Lakeview High School Lakeview, Michigan , . 3 . 29 . 41 91 104 La Chatte’ ACTIVITIES. SPORTS. CLASSES. FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION INDEX. Every time a new class enters Lakeview High School, each student subconsciously begins a new chapter in the long memory book of life. During his four years in high school, he spends half of his time worry¬ ing about the present, and the other half he spends counting the days until the next vacation and dreaming about what he will do in the future. Later, when that future is built, he ' ll have time to reflect on his high school days as some of the best years of his life. He ' ll remember the teacher who helped him so much, another who was nearly unbearable. He ' ll remember the close friends he made, the big social affairs he attended, and the hours of studying. Seldom during these four short years do we take time to remember these things. Now, as another year comes to a close—for some that long-awaited senior year--let us look back on the events which have made this year outstanding. 1966 2 Mike Brockdorf and Linda Wood, Senior candidates, are driven to the grandstand by Bud Baty. Sophomore candidates ' , Steve Raymond and Pat Schmitz, car is driven by Charlie Large. Ron Chapin drives the Junior car which carries Candy Imhoff and Doug Bays. Crowd cheers as Wildcats gain yards. Homecoming Highlights Linda Wood being escorted to the grandstand by Don Chapin, while Mike Brockdorf follows. 5 Cheerleaders Role Not L. to R. Maren Christensen, Linda Mul- holland, Kathy Maynard, Judy Behren- wald, Kay Stewart. L- to R. Jeannie Fitzner, Patty Schmitz, Marsha Skutt, Tonya Reichle, Diana Abbey. 6 L. to R. Ginger Abbey, Kathy Johnson, Lynn Kruger, Audrey Chapin, Janet Chapin. an Easy One L. to R. Teresa Imhoff, Kathy McKel- vey, Sharyl Winter, Connie Carrick, Paula Butler. Representing the student body at football and basketball games, the cheerleaders help to promote school spirit with their peppy cheers. Tryouts for the varsity and J.V. squads are held in the spring. The girls are judged on co¬ ordination, cheering ability, personality, appearance, and smile. Once the girls make the cheerleading squads, their work is far from finished--it has just begun. The girls practice twice a week, and also during the summer. Also, during the summer, they attend a cheerleading camp for four days. Here, they learn new cheers and trade old ones with cheerleaders from other schools. 7 2nd Tear FNA Many Girls Look to Nursing as a Profession 1st Tear FNA L. to R. Carousel was the eighth musical production presented by the students of the Lakeview Music Department on April 28 and 26, 1966. Carousel is the story of a tough carnival barker, Billy Bigelow played by Mike Brockdorf, who falls in love with Julie Jordon played by Joanne Jorgensen, and runs off with her to be married. When they find out that their child is soon to be bom, Billy, in desperation agrees to help in robbery so that he can get some money for the baby. In the act of committing the crime, Billy is killed. Julie is then left to raise her daughter and after 12 years Billy returns to earth for one day to do something for his daughter. When he tries to help her and she rebuffs him he slaps her. But since he loves her so much the slap becomes a token caress of his love. And so in the final scene the tragedy becomes dispelled by love and forgiveness. Carousel was again a most suc¬ cessful production for the music depart¬ ment and was highly praised by all. 23 A 8th Musical Production FRONT ROW: Linda Wood, Steve Barrett, Mark Chapman, Cheryl Hey, Bonnie Hossler, Denise Butler, Betty Hub¬ bard, Chris Olsen, Sue Higgins, Judy Behrenwald, Brenda Huckins, Diana Evans, Cheryl Johnson, Marlene Swift, Alice Goolsby, Chris Bennett, Kay Stewart, Linda Lentz. With the advent of football, they turned their attention to the selection of their Homecoming candidates, the lovely Miss Linda Wood and the dashing Michael Brockdorf. As days passed, the Seniors posed for their pictures and selected their announcements and caps and gowns. Fun, frolic, and hard work went into the production of the Senior Play, Who Dunit? As snow flurries filled the air, boughs of mistletoe and greens under the silver-shimmer of thousands of icicles created the atmosphere for Fantasy in Frost. The pace of activity greatly increased as the last few weeks drew near. Dames ' N Dates found all the girls entertaining their guys in Dog Patch as the Senior ' s sponsored their tra¬ ditional Twirp Dance. A funfilled and memorable trip to Chicago began commencement activities for the Seniors. Upon their arrival home, they prepared for Baccalaureate. After writing their final exams, the Seniors momentarily relaxed to enjoy the humor and predictions of Class Night. They then donned their burgundy and white caps and gowns to pass through Commencement, out of school life, into Life ' s School. 43 Paris by Night 44 Young couples enjoy the sidewalk cafe. The vote gave DeGaulle the French presidency for another 7 years, but the strength of the Socialist-Communistic candidate corroded the popularity of the 71-year-old president.. 6 Agrees to Cease-Fire— Pakistani Foreign Minister Zulfikar Bhutto (right) agreed in the U.N. Security Council on September 22 to ac¬ cept the Council’s cease-fire order in the undeclared war between Pakistan and India. Pakistan’s announcement came after India had agreed to the order. 7 Abortive Coup Fails —Indonesian President Sukarno was toppled from power for a brief 20 hours last fall. The split from Britain was made in an attempt to insure a white minority rule of the African colony. It was the first such move against Britain since the American colonies broke away in 1776. Britain re¬ taliated swiftly and took the problem to the U.N. Security Council, which asked all nations to enforce an oil embargo against the Afri¬ can colony.
