Class Night Recognition It is with greatest pride, that we the members of the La Chatte Staff of 1962-63 dedicate our yearbook to Mr. O. A. Kirk, principal, of the high school. Mr. Kirk graduated from Hillsdale college in 1925 and received his master ' s degree from the University of Michigan in 1937. His first teaching was as a coach for one year at Tren¬ ton Michigan. Later he moved to the upper penninsula and taught for three years in L ' Anse. He then moved to Fre¬ mont where he served as principal for 17 years before coming to Lakeview in 1946. Mr. Kirk Receives Dedication Mr. Kirk has a wife, Gladys, and two sons, James and Charles. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk both enjoy reading and travel¬ ing, and have traveled extensively through¬ out the United States. They also spend a good deal of time at their cottage, The Oaks , near Fremont. Mr. Kirk has been active in many organizations. He is a past master of the Masonic Lodge, past president of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Lakeview Lions, and belongs to several professional organ¬ izations, including the N. E. A., M.E.A., M.S.S.P.A., and the N. A.S.S.P. He has be en president of both the Newaygo and Montcalm County M. E. A. chapters . We wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Kirk for the inspiration and guid¬ ance he has given us during our years in high school. 2

25 Years Of Progress Going back to 1937 when Mr. Kos came to Lake view as principal, he became superintendent the following year, we find that many changes have taken place in the intervening years. The physical plant then consisted of the original building, built in 1916- ' 17, the addition of 1936, which included seven classrooms, tire superintendent ' s office, a shop--now remodeled into a food preparation area, and a boys ' locker room. The first building under Mr. Kos was the four stall bus garage--which is now utilized by the commercial department. As the bus system grew, a need was seen for more housing area, consequently in 1948 a twenty stall bus garage was built. Part of this building, however, was used for classroom space. The agricultural department has been there from the date of completion and the area has also been used by the music department and has housed grade rooms. Following this, considerable study was undertaken on our building needs and this materialized into the building of three classrooms and science and homemaking facili¬ ties in 1954- ' 55 and the addition of a gymnasium-auditorium, locker rooms, and music rooms in 1955- ' 56. Also in this same year, a seven classroom elementary building was constructed. This had two rooms added in 1956- ' 57 and four added in 1959- ' 60. A sinking fund over the past two years has provided enough money so that two more rooms could be added to this structure. A new maintenance garage for the busses, remodeling of existing area for shop, cafeteria, com¬ mercial rooms, library, and science was also comple ted in 1959- ' 60. The total r ’ V ° S worth of the physical plant is presently valued at over one and one half million, plus equipment, which is considerably more than the assessed value of the district in 1937- ' 38 of $754, 750. The assessed valuation now is 16. 6 million. The student body in 1937- ' 38 num¬ bered 332 students and, of course, all had to find their own way to school. This grew to 895 in 1951- ' 52 and to 1385 in 1962- ' 63. The faculty also grew from 15 in 1937- ' 38 to 32 in 1951- ' 52 and to 49 at the present time. Other than Mr. Kos, Mr. Ferris is the only teacher remaining from 1937- ' 38. The bus system was inaugurated in the fall of 1938 with four busses travel¬ ing 44 thousand miles and carrying 192 pupils. This has grown to a system of eighteen, traveling 175 thousand miles and transporting over 1, 000 pupils. Another significant development over these years has been consolidation with surrounding school districts. Some thirty have joined which gives the dis¬ trict reasonably even boundary lines. The Six Lakes, Maple Valley, and Fout districts are the only areas not consolidated which are now a part of our service area. One can see the tremendous growth that has taken place over these years and can appreciate the foresight, planning, and hard work done by Mr. Kos in making our system one that we all can be proud. As members of the annual staff we are pleased that we can, for the com¬ munity, recognize Mr. Kos for his excellent leadership over the past twenty-five years. 3
