3 1833 07470 4153 LA CHATTE 1963 LAKE VIEW HIGH SCHOOL LAKEVIEW, MICHIGAN Class Night Recognition It is with greatest pride, that we the members of the La Chatte Staff of 1962-63 dedicate our yearbook to Mr. O. A. Kirk, principal, of the high school. Mr. Kirk graduated from Hillsdale college in 1925 and received his master ' s degree from the University of Michigan in 1937. His first teaching was as a coach for one year at Tren¬ ton Michigan. Later he moved to the upper penninsula and taught for three years in L ' Anse. He then moved to Fre¬ mont where he served as principal for 17 years before coming to Lakeview in 1946. Mr. Kirk Receives Dedication Mr. Kirk has a wife, Gladys, and two sons, James and Charles. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk both enjoy reading and travel¬ ing, and have traveled extensively through¬ out the United States. They also spend a good deal of time at their cottage, The Oaks , near Fremont. Mr. Kirk has been active in many organizations. He is a past master of the Masonic Lodge, past president of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Lakeview Lions, and belongs to several professional organ¬ izations, including the N. E. A., M.E.A., M.S.S.P.A., and the N. A.S.S.P. He has be en president of both the Newaygo and Montcalm County M. E. A. chapters . We wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Kirk for the inspiration and guid¬ ance he has given us during our years in high school. 2 25 Years Of Progress Going back to 1937 when Mr. Kos came to Lake view as principal, he became superintendent the following year, we find that many changes have taken place in the intervening years. The physical plant then consisted of the original building, built in 1916- ' 17, the addition of 1936, which included seven classrooms, tire superintendent ' s office, a shop--now remodeled into a food preparation area, and a boys ' locker room. The first building under Mr. Kos was the four stall bus garage--which is now utilized by the commercial department. As the bus system grew, a need was seen for more housing area, consequently in 1948 a twenty stall bus garage was built. Part of this building, however, was used for classroom space. The agricultural department has been there from the date of completion and the area has also been used by the music department and has housed grade rooms. Following this, considerable study was undertaken on our building needs and this materialized into the building of three classrooms and science and homemaking facili¬ ties in 1954- ' 55 and the addition of a gymnasium-auditorium, locker rooms, and music rooms in 1955- ' 56. Also in this same year, a seven classroom elementary building was constructed. This had two rooms added in 1956- ' 57 and four added in 1959- ' 60. A sinking fund over the past two years has provided enough money so that two more rooms could be added to this structure. A new maintenance garage for the busses, remodeling of existing area for shop, cafeteria, com¬ mercial rooms, library, and science was also comple ted in 1959- ' 60. The total r ’ V ° S worth of the physical plant is presently valued at over one and one half million, plus equipment, which is considerably more than the assessed value of the district in 1937- ' 38 of $754, 750. The assessed valuation now is 16. 6 million. The student body in 1937- ' 38 num¬ bered 332 students and, of course, all had to find their own way to school. This grew to 895 in 1951- ' 52 and to 1385 in 1962- ' 63. The faculty also grew from 15 in 1937- ' 38 to 32 in 1951- ' 52 and to 49 at the present time. Other than Mr. Kos, Mr. Ferris is the only teacher remaining from 1937- ' 38. The bus system was inaugurated in the fall of 1938 with four busses travel¬ ing 44 thousand miles and carrying 192 pupils. This has grown to a system of eighteen, traveling 175 thousand miles and transporting over 1, 000 pupils. Another significant development over these years has been consolidation with surrounding school districts. Some thirty have joined which gives the dis¬ trict reasonably even boundary lines. The Six Lakes, Maple Valley, and Fout districts are the only areas not consolidated which are now a part of our service area. One can see the tremendous growth that has taken place over these years and can appreciate the foresight, planning, and hard work done by Mr. Kos in making our system one that we all can be proud. As members of the annual staff we are pleased that we can, for the com¬ munity, recognize Mr. Kos for his excellent leadership over the past twenty-five years. 3 F oreword Table Of Contents To preserve the important and every- Dedication 2 day occurences of ou r school life, we the annual staff have compiled this book, the Recognition 3 La Chatte of 1963. It is therfore safe to say they have by far the most to expect from their schooling. During the year the class had a Halloween picnic at Ford Lincoln Park. There they enjoyed being scared by all sorts of ghosts and goblins. The second semester the class went on a well-attended roller skating party to Big Rapids . The class had great deal of fun at their class parties and their class spon¬ sors Mrs. DeVoogd and Mr. Wood spoke highly of the enthusiam of the class and also of the fun they had at the class events. This year the Wildcats fought their way through what was probably the toughest competition of the his¬ tory of the school. Regardless of the lack of size, their great will-to-win brought them through with a winning season. Injuries were a definite handicap, but fine play from the younger members, plus the experi¬ ence of the Senior members of the squad off-set this drawback so that with able coaching and team work the Varsity squad of ' 62 did come through with the 6-2 record. The Junior Varsity basketball team had a very good record of 13 wins to only 3 losses. The team has many good players who show a lot of future potential. The boys are very fast and scrappy, always ready to stand firm. We predict a good future for L.H.S. in sports with boys like this coming up. The game was a close contest, but Whitehall was just a little better the night of the game. The success of the season was due to the fine coaching of Mr. Clark and the exceptional height of the players. The height lent itself to good offensive plays and much hustle proved to make strong defensive moves. 35 8th Grade Breaks Even 5-5 ROW ONE: Charlie Howe, Ronnie Denslow, Jeff Charnley, Mike Moon, Gordon Kohler, Ronnie Gietzen, Dick Jensen. The final winners were chosen by popular vote of the student body. The seniors sponsored petite and pretty Nan VanOrman for queen and all-round athlete Gary Switzer for king. Cindy Miller, an avid music fan, and Jim Stewart, a sports en¬ thusiast, were sponsored by the Junior class . Sweet little brunette Janet Faling and Louis Lincoln of the J.V. team were the sophomore candidates. Student Cadets Work With Teachers F. T. A. girls find satisfaction in helping teachers instruct classes and in dealing with younger students. The girls are assigned, by their sponsor Mr. Van Ocker, to a teacher at the beginning of each new semester. They are graded as in regular academic classes and are given full credit for their efforts. In addition to their usual program, the girls held a special Christ¬ mas party for thirty of the needy grade school students. The group also heard lectures from various colleges discussing the rewards of a teaching career. As their closing project, theF.T.A. held a thank you tea for the faculty. Girls Have Desire But The F.N.A. group was one of the high school ' s most inert clubs . The girls of the club had great enthusiasm and desire to expand their knowledge and pre¬ pare for future nursing, but due to circumstances beyond their control the program was not able to get off the ground. There was not any second year class in future nursing, however, several of the senior students spent many rewarding hours working as murses aides at Kelsey Memorial Hospital. It is hoped that the talents of the high school girls are more creatively used in the following year. Under the guidance of Mrs . Wightman, who is herself an extremely gifted and talented lady, the F.H.A. club sold cook books, which contained one of Mrs. Wightman ' s own personal recipes, made pies to sell at Thanksgiving, sponsored the Homecomi ng dance, and held a pajama party as an informal initiation for new officers. There has been several banquets with films and slides shown for enter¬ tainment. The most en¬ joyed event, however, was the formal initiation held at the beginning of the school year with the mem¬ bers dressed to represent French characters. Smile For The Camera Mr. Nienhuis, who has a great personal interest in photography, initiated and sponsors the Camera Club which is in its fourth year. Yet the staff, consisting of students 7th through the 12th grades, has brought in many improvements, including: new IBM print, wider coverage, sports highlights, editorials and feature articles. Another new attraction, was the publi¬ cation of a special April Fool ' s issue, comprised of jokes and ridiculous articles. It was said by the students to be the most enjoyable reading ever. The success of the club is due to the drive and enthusiasm of its sponsor, Mr. Jack Berends. Mr. Berends plans to leave our high school system next fall to take up teaching nearer a college so he can continue his education. His going will be regretted by the paper staff who will find it difficult to continue publishing without him. 67 Bigger! Better! Best! 1963 La Chatte Tliis year, as every year, the annual staff believes they have created the best yearbook ever. The group, sponsored by Mr. R. Van Ocker, has changed to an entirely new publishing company, in hopes of turning out better material. A special feature of this yearbook is the addition of informative copy to add greater value and lasting quality to the book as the years go by and the memory grows faint. Each and every member has worked exceptionally hard to make the annual for 1963 the most original and meri¬ torious book that ever left L.H.S. Finding themselves pinched for funds, the group has begged, bor¬ rowed, or stolen to see to it that you, the student boyd gets the best for the least. They are also one of the groups most deserving of recognition. These girls give freely of their time so they may attend all football and basketball games, plus many hours of strenuous practice. These girls sponsored after game dances, held car washes, attended cheerleading conferences, and bought new uniforms (with self- earned money) and pom poms . The varsity squad, consisting of three seniors and three juniors, did its best to continue original pep assemblies and gimmicks to arouse student enthusiasm. The girls obviously succeeded for the student body turned out in full force to nearly all games. LEFT TO RIGHT: Joan French, Judy Outman, Nancy Wood, Sally Ward, Gloria Sirrine. Together with the other music groups the choir held homemade candy sales at noon hours to raise extra funds. Students interested in music could also participate in either the Woman ' s Glee Club or the Men ' s Glee Club. These singing organizations were made up of both high school and junior high classes, meeting for rehearsals at noon. The theme of the Jumor-Senior prom this year was Moonlight Cove”. In keeping with the theme, the dance was set in a virtual water wonderland with the walls decorated with fish, octopii, sea shells, anchors, and all manner of marine life. Swaying palm trees, and fish netting silhouetted the dance floor. Over head a ceiling of sea blue balloons and a large pale, glowing moon created an out-door atmosphere. With the Swingin ' B ' s ' pouring forth music, the final touch to a perfect evening was the girls in their swishing dresses and fragrant flowers, accompanied by their guys, exceptionally good- looking in their dress suits and boutonniere. During intermission the Junior class pre¬ sented each of the Senior girls with an LHS charm and each of the Senior boys with an LHS tie-tac. These were the nicest and most appre¬ ciated prom gifts given to the graduating Seniors in some time. So the evening ended with a bang as the balloons were dropped from the ceiling and the crowd went wild popping balloons and ripping down decorations for souveniors . The senior class as is customary, was the most active grade in extracurricular activi¬ ties, and the least participating in academic studies. Throughout the year there were a number of special selections to be made. The first was to decide on class colors. We decided on light and dark blue. Then robes and announcements had to be ordered. The white carnation was chosen as class flower. Finally the Halls of Ivy, and Hands that work, brains that think, and Hearts that love, were selected as class song and motto. Aside from the actual class business there was a lot of fun also. The senior class spon¬ sored the Christmas dance Snow flake Swirl, and the Twisting Twirps a turn-about dance in which the boys were escorted by the girls. There were also several senior class parties. Mrs. Paulson was kind enough to open the Red Wood Inn to the class for one party. There was a very enjoyable progressive dinner for the seniors and their dates after the Junior- Senior Prom. It began at Mr. and Mrs . Kluges, then we progressed to Dr. and Mrs . Raders, and concluded our evening at the N.H. Youngmans ' . Still later the class took a skip day to Chicago, chaperoned by Mr. and Mrs. Van Ocker. After a most exciting year, the senior class graduated on May 31, as a class of 82. 86 DANNY ARMOCK: F. F. A. 1-2-3-4, Bas ketball 1, Paper Staff 3-4, Perfect Atten¬ dance 1.
