The Junior Class was 81 in number as the year started. Our first thrill was that of receiving our class rings which symbolizes our goals while attending high school. We also thoroughly enjoy- ed our dance, The Harvest Hop, which was held in November with much success. As the new year came in, we started concentrating on the Junior Play, Paint the Town Pink, and the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme for the Prom was An Enchanting Evening. Hawaiian scenery and music were the background for a wonderfully spent evening to honor the Seniors. We are all looking forward to sharing the responsibilities of being Seniors and with the closing of the year, we would like to express our sincere thanks to Mrs. Gregg, Mrs. Czuchna, and Mr. Ferris for their everlasting fatih in us throughout the last year. He failed, however, to mention drinking from the brimming cup of life wisely. As we, the graduating class, now face toward the long road stretching indefinitely beyond, an overwhelming desire seizes us to experience all life has to give. Such experience, whether physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual must forever be affiliated with wisdom. If we fail to make wise use of our bodies we shall commit a grave crime for health is as necessary to a happy person as integritv of character and strength of mind. Modern generations have allowed their bodies to become store- houses of huge food surpluses or as one philosopher put it have allowed Imports to exceed exports in their internal economy. Reducing diets prove a dime a dozen but one action will always prove invaluable too healthy body exercise! Exercise is also invaluable to a healthy mind. Those of us not continuing our formal education will, nevertheless, find countless opportunity to develop our Intellect if we bear in mind only one thing costs more than an education, the lack of one. Most of us who are going on to college will find ourselves forced into specialized fields by the technicalities of our age. With increased stress on science we may only receive fragments of literature, history, art, and philosophy. When we have completed our formal schooling and taken up dally occupations we then should continue our never ending quest for knowledge of the humanities as well as the sciences. The unexhaustlble resources left us by the great writers, statesmen, artists, and thinkers of the past shall provide us with a more enjoyable future. Healthy bodies and keen minds will prove little comfort In leisure hours if unable to share their vigor and zest with family and friends. From the past ages we may procure a fuller understanding of our fellow man which shall lead toward greater personal satisfaction and a richer heritage for future generations. A permanent part of this rich heritage Is our religion, greater a factor in character development than even parents and teachers. Without firm faith in an all powerful God, civilization could never have come into being. Those who specialize in science might find it hard to understand religion unless they believe, as did the American physicist, Robert A. Milllkan, that only in this way can the finest influences which have ever come into human life be obtained. Yes, drink the brimming cup to the lees but drink it wisely and thank a good God for the trials and triumphs we call life! Rhoda Kay Kluge Salutatory Good evening. Ladles and Gentlemen. I, on behalf of the Senior Class of 1959, cm deeply honored to welcome you; our parents, relatives, teachers, and friends to this momentous occasion in our lives. As our motto states, We have crossed the bay, the ocean lies ahead. The first high water mark has been passed and we now stand on level footing waiting to see what the tide brings in. Our voyage through education has been rewarding and will continue to be so because of the understanding that has been extended to us. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation is given especially, to our parents from whom our comprehension of ideas and understanding was derived. From the beginning of our lives, you hove guided us through childhood ideas, ad- olescent phases, hopeful ambitions, and now reality. Individual understanding has come through channels of a helpful chat, encouraging smiles, and even a firm upper hand in some cases. In any event, you have given us the logical power of abstract thought which shall always be a rewarding inheritance from you. The Faculty, also, has lead us on to another lighthouse — one beaming with knowledge. Todays students are indeed fortunate for they have learned to per- ceive and to apply this knowledge toward gaining a richer and more meaning- ful life. So with understanding obtained from parental guidance, school administra- tive assistance, and faith in The Almight, we are ready to face the sea. As we have journeyed through our school years, understanding has Increased proportionally. It is therefore only logical that Understanding is the basis of progress . Every person today has the duty to become a citizen active in community and world affairs. Because of this, human nature should be explored to the fullest. For then, we will not only owe ourselves, but our families, our com- munity, and our nation intellectual judgment. This judgment and understanding is vital in developing peaceful relations and democratic foreign polices. It must always be remembered that the freedom of a country is taken away when individuals fail to realize the basic principles of existence and co-op- eration. As individuals, we are strong and free but must be constantly consid- erate of others. By doing this, the valuable inheritance of understanding which you hove given us shall flourish in the fight for freedom. We must pass this possession on to posterity as our offering to the world. It can and must con- tinue to set standards and plant beliefs for all mankind as it has done for us. Our understanding is now properly prepared because of you, and we are ready to face the sea of realization. This realization is that we have a life to live and on ocean to cross. We will be able to do this and more because, Understanding is the basis of progress . We were happy and thrilled to be the first class to enroll with more than 100 students. Witn great pride we elected our class officers. They were: Jan- ice Hutson-President, Phyllis Root-Vice-President, John Stout-Secretary, Terry Stephens-Treasurer, Jim Ellafrits and Rhoda Kluge were the Student Council Rep- resentatives. Taking a tip from the upperclassmen we took a look into the future and saw a great financial crisis ahead. Under the leadership of our class sponsors Mr. Neinhuis and Mrs. Ferris we sponsored two roller skating parties. These parties gave us a feeling of some of the extra curriculor activities carried on by the various school classes and other organizations. We weren ' t exactly a stupid class either for after our first year of school we hod 23 members receiving scholarship certificates at the Annual Honors As- sembly. With these awards under our hats we had a good start along the Path of Knowledge, which when we reached the end would mean Graduation. As Sophomores we again stormed the citadel, advancing step by step to- ward the top. A few had found the way too rough and departed from our ranks, leaving only 103. As usual, the first thing on our agenda was the election of our class of- ficers for the year. They were: John Stout-President, Richard Honsen-Vice President, Ruth Ann Ward-Secretary, and Kay Behrenwald-Treasurer. Our Stu- dent Council Representatives were Ralph Langdon and Joan Kos. Roller Skating seemed to be the most popular form of recreation for under- classmen and we were no exception. As the first activity we sponsored an All School Skate, under the helpful leadership of our class sponsors - Mr. Nein- huis and Mr. Fagerlund. Then things were pretty quiet until March when our basketball team went all the way and won for us the Class C State Champ- ionship. We were happy to have the privilege of sponsoring the victory dance which was called March Melodies. On April 18, we played host to neighboring Sophomore Classes for Career Day which started us on the path of choosing our careers for the future. An- other highlight of the year for many of us was when we were given the honor of serving for the Jr. - Sr. Banquet. The winning of 25 scholarship and 20 perfect attendance certificates was a perfect ending for a fine year. We entered our third year at Lakeview High School as a class of 95 feel- ing very superior because we had succeeded in overcoming the stumbling blocks lying along the Path of Knowledge. We were anxious to start our long list of planned activities by first hold- ing the election of officers. They were: Jim Ellafrits-President; Ted Kortes- Vice President; Darwin Johnson -Secretary; Janice Hutson -Treasurer; Kay Beh- renwald and John Stout were our Student Council Representatives. With anticipation for the future and determination to still improve our fi- nancial status we sponsored the Thanksgiving Dance Snow Swirl. The Junior Play Who Dunit was a great success and will be remembered by the entire class. One day at our Class meeting Mr. Kos informed us that there was to be no Jr. and Sr. Banquet this year and no Senior Trip. With most of our hopes dashed we began planning to host the Seniors for an Evening in Paris, which featured the sidewalk cafes, Parisian waitresses, the Eiffel Tower and many other attractions. Thus the Jr. and Sr. Prom was a big success and I am sure will be remembered by the entire class for a long time. Although the Mighty Seniors were not hesitant in letting us know we were merely underclassmen, we still had our day when we held our Mock Election. In this way we were able to pass judgment on the dignified Seniors by letting them know whom we considered best qualified for these awards. The results of the election were given at the Class Night Ceremonies by two members of the Junior Class. We were invited to march for Baccalaureate with the Seniors and several of us were also asked to usher at Commencement. We accepted these invita- tions with great pride for it was the first time we had used the new auditoriu n for the graduation exercises. We were also honored by becoming the intramural champions during our Junior year. Making this possible was the winning of the basketball champion- ship by the boys and also the singles and doubles in ping pong. The awarding of 22 scholarship certificates was the perfect ending to a per- fect year despite the fact that we couldn ' t have our senior trip. With many activities behind us we still kept looking into the future for the big night which lay before us - Graduation! We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to our class sponsors Mrs. Gregg, Mrs, Czuchna and Mr. Ferris who assisted us in our activities through- out the year. At last we, ourselves, were the mighty seniors. Now we could look back on those who have yet to obtain this goal. Each year had taken its toll from our class, and this year was no exception, we now had 83 members. Our class officers for this year were: Jim Ellafrits-President, Phyllis Root-Vice President, Judy Cunningham-Secretary, and Edna King-Treasurer, Our Student Council Representatives were Mary Peters and Michael Stewart. Many students including myself thought that our Senior year would be one of leisure, but much to our surprise this has not been true, under the helpful leadership of our class sponsors Mr. Van Ocker and Mrs. Rice, this has proved to be one of our busiest years. First came our Senior play, o comedy, entitled, Bull In A China Shop. Then Santa ' s Wonderland which was the t-heme for our Christmas dance. In the spring we started making plans for our dance, The Senior Special, which proved special in many ways, it was to be the last dance we would sponsor and it featured both round and square dancing. To add a little more interest and to improve our financial status we raffled off a portable television set, which I ' m sure one person remembers very well. Soon It was time to start making plans for our graduation activities, which included Class Night, Baccalaureate, Commencement and the choosing of our invitations and name cords. The Senior girls were honored guests at a tea sponsored by the Lakeview Women ' s Club, and later at one given by Beach ' s Furniture Store, at which time each girl received a miniature cedar chest. Not to be outdone by the girls, the boys were guests of honor at a dinner sponsored by the Lakeview Men ' s Club. The entire class was guests of honor at the Jr. and Sr. Prom, which was entitled An Enchanted Evening. We would like to thank all of these groups for helping to make our last year at Lakeview a more happy and memorable one. Other highlights of the year Included our one day trip to Chicago and the receiving of our senior pictures. All of this led up to graduation Itself, the goal we have been striving for during our four years at Lakeview High School. Donald Behrenwald Linda Peters g Ti Mh is UM I M «! - . «■-
