WILDCATS Ab a whole, the basketball team had a very succeeeful season, ending the year with a good record of 1? wins and 5 losses. Out of the five losses that we suffered-its the opinion of most people that 2 if not 3 of them should have gone the other way. The first game with Greenville could have ended with uscn top very easily if we had hit any of the great number of free throws that we were awarded in the closing minutes. The other two losses to Vestaburg and Howard City should have been easy victories for the Wildcats had they played the ball they are capable of playing. But that's luck! The Cats went as far in the tournment this year as any Lakeview Team has ever gone and with a few breaks, they could have continued even further. The team captured the County CO-champlonshlp, district championship and went two nights in the Regionale, Bowing to Newaygo the second night. A new member of the squad this year was Bob Hill,a freshman from Trufant. Bob looks good to us and seems to be improving all the time. He captured plenty of points for the Cats. Captain Winnie Petersen took the team through the district tournament with honors and was well worth his weight in gold. Pete copped 47 points the three nights of the district. Coach Donald Pounder will be able togo through next year with practically the same team, except for two Seniors, Scott and Wheeler. Their height will be missed, but it is predicted the coach will have another championship team next year. The oats seem to be made up of speed, speed and more speed. Good luck next year boys.'iij Nov. 19 BASKETBALL 1948-49 LAKEVIEW OPPONENTS Remus 44 li Nov. 30 Cedar Springs 52 Deo. 3 Bolding 28 20 Dec. 7 xxGreenvllle 29 31 Deo. 10 xVestaburg 23 25 Dec. 17 xHoward City 50 1+0 ?an. 4 Remus 1+3 31+ Jan. 7 xCarson City 33 28 Jan. 14 xEdmore 31+ 30 Jan. 21 xVestaburg 57 18 Jan. 25 x8tanton 52 26 Jan. 28 xHoward City 22? 34 Feb. 1 Belding 28 22 Feb. 4 xEdmore 35 33 Feb. 8 xSheridan 57 10 Feb. 11 Greenville 32 46 Feb. 18 xCrystal 67 32 Feb. 25 Ithaca x-League games xx-0vertime DISTRICT TOURNAMENT Cancelled Mar. 2 Sparta 1+9 25 Mar. 4 Sparanac 38 19 Mar. 5 Rockford REGIONAL TOURNAMENT 38 37 Mar. 10 Leslie 1+5 44 Mar. 11 Newago 25 45 SECOND TEAM BASKETBALL In bringing down the curtain on the 1948-49 basketball season, we find the Kittens with an above average record. Although handicapped at the start of the year by the loss of one of their star players, the Little Wildcats fought back to the very end and came out with a record of 10 wins and 7 losses. The seoond team is made up of 9th and 10th grade boys who are good players but laok training, coaoh Cook takes the fellows, trains them, and sooner or later the Kittens get to be Cats. The seoond team, though it plays first at every game, draws as large a crowd as the first team and gives its supporters plenty of thrills. At any rate, its a certainty that Lakeview will have a good seoond team as long as we have a Cook around. TRACK Lakeview had not been very fortunate in winning their track meets in re- oent years. This season we have our 4 record setters from last year with us as well as many other boys from lastyears team. A1thought our track is not the most modern and our field is bumpy, we will get through with what we have and perhaps come out on top. The team has new suits this year, and we hope they are initiated by plenty of success! DRIVERS TRAINING One of the newest classes added to the school curriculum is Driver's Training, which is efficiently supervised by Mr. Cook, is iven 20 hours behind the wheel plus 18 weeks of actual class .xt oooks. SENIOR PLAY A freezing rain was the curee put upon us by old man weather when we c e- clded to have our class clay December 16th and 17th. 3ut no matter, the play did go on! We had small crowds both nights but made up for that by nutting on a matinee preformance the following week. Our Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cornelia Otis Skinner, was the rolllcK- lng, costumed comedy chosen as the annual class clay. Leading parte were taken by 3oneta Houghton and Mary Hadder, the many supporting roles were played by Leona Kempton, Bonita Petersen, Doris Armitage, Elaine Nlenhuls, Mary Ingraham Evelyn Chaoin, 3ernlce Kappe, Dean Scott, Richard Wheeler, 3ud Moore, Lyle Kohler, Perry Johnson, Leslie Gunmer, and Harold Surface. The production was directed by Mrs. Rice. We would like to mention that her presence backstage the 16th and 17th gave us much needed confidence and moral support. Every clay had an Important backstage crew; Ours was no exception. Al- though they are never seen or heard during the clay without them the cast Is less than nothing. These honors go to Bette Mulder,Bob Young, Ettabe]le Helms Ronald Edgerly, David Petersen and Doris Sovereign. At that tine the new part of the building wasn t built nor what its now the si op and cafeteria. Cliff had an office in one end of what is now the chemistry laboratory. He fired the furnaces by hand until 1946 Imhoff when an automatic stoker was installed. Cliff has survived countless numbers of oaperwad wars, water guns, and bean shooters besides a few cases of rotten-egg gas, the gas was in the ventilating fan. But aside from all tr.ls, still, when sometr.ing wrong, from repairing a watch to replacing a light bulb in the too of the its Where1s Cliff . Then in 1940 two more buses were added to the fleet and a four bus garage was built to service them in. In 1941 two more buses were added,in JS46 and 1947 one bus was added each year In 1948 and 49 enough new buses were added to replace most of the original buses and Increase the fleet to the present twelve.Summer Paul Hyatt of 1948 saw a new 16 bus garage being built. Now completed, it holds the entire twelve buses. Paul's bus driving Jobs have been varied. He was a regular run bus driver for nine years and nlne months without tne aid of a substitute.Through out the last eleven years, ne has driven to countless numbers of basket-ball games, trips, and numerous other extra-curricular activities. Paul arrives at the garage at 6:30 a.m. each morning to ready his charges for their morning run, then services them and lines them up for their night run; he then waits for the return of all the buses and his day ends at 5:00 p.m. Many thanks go to Paul for his co-operation with the classes and clubs. The cafeteria started by working with the welfare for eleven years. Each year has showed definite improvement and Nov; the equipment is good, food excellent, price low and we have a wonderful staff of five cooks who really deserve all the praise that is bestowed upon then. They work diligently and without complaining to produce the nutritious food which we are getting in the cafeteria this year. A few of our cooks are new to us and their work. Some of them have been wit us a number of years, in fact, Mrs. Hart has devoted eight years to working in the cafeteria. An- other cook, irs. jalconer who has been wit us nine years previous to t.is,is not in our midst this year because of a broken shoulder, but she also deserves a lot of credit in improving our school lunch program. As well as feeding the st'-dents, the cafeteria, throng t 10 Hone and Family Classes end elemen- tary teachers, is being used to educate the children on good eating ebits. i.'.iss V. illison, manager of the cafeteria, deserves credit for the services performed and the work which she has done for both t ie cafeteria and school. Under the direction of Krs. Pounder, the cheerleaders presented the greatest variety of assemblies and pep meetings ever heard through tie halls of L.H.S. They lad Lakeview's cheering section through the 17 regularly scheduled games, the district tour- naments, and the 2 regional games.
