the long season is over now and the bruises hav healed long ago. if you try to talk to a varsit player about the season, he shakes his head and says i don't know with a glazed expression in hi eyes. you can tell he is deeply disappointed. never has a team expected so much and gotten so little. this was to be lakeviewts first winning season, and those who were with the team when they trained in august felt the enthusiasm and the confidence grow. that first scrimmage with windham helped. you were knocking down the same players that put you on your back the year before. the first two games of the sea- son showed the bulldogs that their potential was unlimited. the gridders worked feverishly during practice, but no one seemed to mind. after all, we were going to win this year. we suffered our first setback against a tough canfield team. but the next week was champion, and we knew we could bounce back against our archrivals. the game would be close, but this was the year we were going to win. the game wasn't close, and we would have to wait another week for our third victory. but some doubts crept into our minds. were our gridders that tough? after our homecoming loss, the dive gained momentum. players began doubting themselves. when it came time to make the big play, none could come up with one. thus, the season ended. our record? an inglorious 2-8. people who don't know us will look at that record and say Iakeview must not have a good football team. that is their mistake. our excellence is not the type that is displayed on a scoreboard, for points scored on fri- day night mean little when compared to the conglomerate of feelings and emotions we call pride. our excellence was felt in the pride of the cheerleaders during the victory march at pymatuming valley. our excellence was felt in the pride of the coaches as they witnessed the eager response of the team to their guidance. our excellence was felt in the pride of the team as they listened to the coach read a crippled boyis letter to them, expressing his confidence in their ability to win. this was lakeview's football. our success cannot be measured by statistics, but by the pride felt by everyone involved. john ward
