Lakeview had it. But something didnt come together. Maybe it was the fumbles or the breakdown in unity and spirit or the injuries. It was a dis- appointing 1969 season. 0-8. It was a combination of bad breaks and inexperience. The opening of Lakeviewts second season featured Don Richards, Jim Robinson, and Del Ruiter as co-captains. Mid season, a tragic accident during the homecoming game resulted in the death of Lakeviewis beste Don Richards. The dedication of the football field and the scores of tributes emphasized the deep loss felt by everyone. in spite of the poor record, team members Dave Denman and Jim Robinson made first team on the All Trumbull County Defense Team and Del Ruiter and Dave Rowley received honorable men- tion. The 1969 Lake- view Cross Country Team com- bined a maximum of individual ef- fort to capture first place in the Trumbull AA Meet for the fifth con- secutive year. Then came the State Meet in Columbus on November 1. This was Scott Snowts third State meet and his last Chance to be number one. Tradition called for him to be in the lead from the very begin- ning. He wasntt. Then he moved up. Slowly at first, then quickly he surpassed all but one runner. And when the other guy didnit have anything left, Scott had a little more. Scott surged over the finish line and collapsed, having fullfilled a three-year dream and all he could say was llState Champ, State Champil Snow was not yet able to stand without assistance when Frank Book, exerting supreme ef- fort, plunged over the finish line, without even realizing he had finished ninth. These two individual victories were the victories of the whole team and the entire school. TophAt the district meet, senior Scott Snow hkicks it in to set a course record of 10:32 which qualified him for State competition on November 1. Varsity Team: Coach Berkhouse, D. Ruiter, 8. Snow, D. The 1969-1970 Bulldog basket- ball team completed its season with a laudable record of 8 wins and 12 losses. Coach Berkhouseis squad was tri-captained by sen- iors Jerry Conley, Mike Sentner, and Scott Snow. Other seniors on the squad were Del Ruiter and Jim Robinson. Defensewasthe Bulldogsi strong- point as Jerry Conley set the stan- dards to be followed by the rest of the team. Before he completed his four year career, ttGooberii repeat- edly broke Lakeviewis rebound rec- ord until he finally raised it to 27 rebounds in one game. His efforts were rewarded when he received first team position on the AII-Trum- bull A League Squad and second team position on the AIl-Trumbull AA League Squad. Coach Berkhouse characterized his underclassmen-dominated team as iihaving unlimited potential and the ability to work hard. With the return of juniors Rob Starck and Mark Bumstead teamed with out- standing sophomores Gary Zuga and Mike Vugrincic, Lakeviewis future on the round bail court looks extremely encouraging. Highlights of the season included victories over Newton Falls and an upset of MacDonald in the Class A tournament at Niles. The Bulldogs, hopes to travel to Canton for the district competi- tion were shortstopped by the Rams of Mineral Ridge in the final game of the season. With 18 returning underclass- men, the Bulldogs will provide tough competition for the opposi- tion nextyear. Place, Captain K. Mauk. Coach Howell began his career as Lake- view track coach by scheduling the track squad for a season of 20 meets out of which they won 18. The Bulldogs shattered a 33-year-old district record in the mile relay by 4 seconds for a time of 3228.8 and a district record in the mile with a 4219.8 by Scott Snow. The teams record-breaking speed and ability enabled them to set new school records in the 220, V2 mile, high jump, 2 mile, and shot put. The track squad won three important invitationais: the Newberry Invitational, the Heath Invitational, and the Mason Invita- tional, as well as hosting and winning the single A championship in the first annual TraCk-O-Rama. But the 1970 season was finally high- lighted by sending five qualifying boys to the State meet on May 23. Scott Snow represented Lakeview in the mile and mile relay; Dave Denman participated in the shot put and discus competition; Dave Rowiey ran in the mile relay; Bob Stringer competed in the high jump and mile relay; and Frank Book ran the V2 mile and the mile relay.
