CGMMO LEARNING Common Learnings is the subject which gives the essentials lor successful living. Each year, as the pupils go higher in grades. they are led more deeply into units that are studied. Some ofthe divisions are: Family Living, Con- servation, Leisure Time Social Living, Com- munity Understandings, Health and Safety. Educational and Vocational Problems. Critical Thinking, Transportation and Communication, and Crime and Delinquency. The Common Learnings curriculum in .luns ior High consists ol a combination ol reading, spelling, and English into one program. Oc- casionally a room studies a selected llnit for a weelc or two. ln some cases more can be learned out ol' the classroom than in it, and when this happens field trips are talien. For example, while study- ing Social Living, the juniors went on a lqield e259 New trip. The capitol building ol the state of illinois was their destination. They visited the State police. the Supreme Court, the State Library. the Health and Safety Department. and the House ol Representatives. Conservation was a very interesting unit lor the sophomores. They toolc a field trip to a farm which used crop rotation, grass water- ways, contour plowing and planting, and tile drainage. Learning about the filling in problem lor Lalce Decatur was done by taking an ina spection tour around the lalce, with the heip of a guide in the conservation lvielcl, hir. Beeson, to explain the situation. The Sophomores, Juniors, and the Seniors also visited local theaters to see Shalcespvarean movies. Common Learnings instructors are tht- class advisors.
