THE FAMOUS BELL OF LAKEVIEW” The bell that calls the children to school in Lakeview is nearly a century old. Long before it came to Lakeview it called people to worship at the Methodist Church in La Fayette. It served in this capacity long before the Civil War. When the church was used as a refuge for soldiers of the Confederate Army the old bell became scarred and cracked from shots from the enemy. Years later when the old church was torn down and a new one erected, the bell was offered for sale. It was purchased by the Parent-Teacher Association of Lakevi.ew and was the first main project of this young organization H. E Daily, who was then principal of the school, brought the bell to his home, preparatory to placing it in the school belfry. During the night it was stolen from his porch. The next day a hunt was made for it throughout all the junk yards of Chattanooga. The last junk dealer to be interviewed stated that he had purchased no bell that day. The words were hardly out of his mouth when the sound of a bell pealed forth. Three small Negro boys unobserved had started ringing the bell, which proved to be the historic bell from La Fayette. Following its recovery it was placed in the school belfry and still calls the children in this vicinity to school
