Varsity Cheerleader Sponsored by Gladys Dickey Varsity Cheerleaders received most of their recognition for their appearances at sporting events, but their duties extended beyond that. ln May, the Cheerleaders attended the Garland Cheerleading Clinic and came away with both Superior ribbons and a Spirit Stick. Later, they attended the Houston University Camp where they again were awarded Superior ribbons every day and the Spirit Stick for the week, The Cheerleaders were also nominated for the Award of Excellence and after making the finals, eventually were placed first runner-up. Individually, Junior Mary Meyer and Senior Wendy Whadley were nominated for All American Cheerleader. Besides attending these clinics, the Varsity Cheerleaders taught a very successful cheerleading clinic for girls under the Qth grade level. The Cheerleaders also helped to build Varsity Cheerleaders Mary Meyer and Suzi Neilon discuss the action on the field. school spirit and sportsmanship. They hung spirit signs, cheered at pep rallies, and helped boost the football players' morale by decorating the locker room and baking for them. Minute Men Minutemen, sponsored by led Reed, helped Lolseview estoblish school spirit ond promote Potriot Pride in the student body. During the summer of 1985, the Minute Men sold ods for the bocls of stodium cushions which were given owoy during the school yeor. J.V. and Freshman Cheerleaders Cheerleaders have always been thought of as major spirit raisers in the school. This year the Freshman and J.V, squads upheld this expectation. Both squads cheered at pep rallies. ln addi- tion, they participated in the Orientation pep rally, football and I baslsetball games and the Labor Day Parade. The girls also did many other spirit building activities such as hanging posters in the cafeteria and main hallways.
