Triple A students were selected by a panel that consisted of one ad- ministrator, one counselor, three teachers and three students. Students chosen for the honor this year included Michelle Willis, Roy Wallace ond Piyawat Chatpolrak for Academics. Those receiving awards for Athletics included Joseph Wavrusa, David Douglas and Pot Christian. Lisa Flori, Clay Barber and Brett Stinson received the honor for Arts. All of these students received a special AAA gold medal and were treated to dinner by Mr. Coleman at the end ofthe year. The entronce from the stu- dent porking lot hod the white line of the TexjMex boundory ond, of course, o border potrol office. The freshmen ond sophomores decoroted A- ond B-Holls with streomers, bolloons, flogs, ond even o bridge over the Rio Grande. The juniors metomorphosed the moin hollwoy into o TexfMex Bonko's Morlset, but the seniors, os usuol, won the decoroting contest by filling the Commons Areo with o horse Cstuffed, from Shepler'sD, on oil derricls ond o minioture version of the Alomo. Next in the line of Homecoming festivities wos the pep rolly, feoturing o mini-floot porode. Besides the regulor pep rolly ottenders, the seniors of '85 returned ond did their port to fill the boys' gym with Potriot Pride. As the cheerleoders, Liberty Dolls, Sweetheorts, ond bond performed, oll the students joined in to cheer on the Potriots ogoinst the South Gorlond Colonels. The following night wos the event on which students spent most of their mo- ney on dresses, suits, tickets, cors, ond expensive restouronts. The Home- coming Donce held o Iorge turnout, where students hod oppetizers, tolked, donced, ond generolly hod fun. The gun goes off and you go as fast as you can toward the finish line where loving arms embrace you not because you won but because you had the courage to try. This is what it is like for a Special Olympics athlete. The athletes do not always have skill or knowledge of their sport, but they do have enthusiasm, courage and pride, The day the Patriot Special Olympics Team spent at the city-wide event this year was a day full of triumph and laughter, even in the face of defeat, These students are not just winners, they have pride pride in themselves and pride in Lakeview. Adam Guzman participated in the long jump and in track events. He received several ribbons for his efforts, TOCES. The Special Olympics team members have a wonderful attitude to their school and themselves. Thyey are lov- ing, caring people who enjoy life, no matter what curves it throws them, Adam Guzman smiles with the pride of a real winner t Miles Kilway ran several races along Q with participating in the long jump and 9 the softball toss James Mills did well in the softball toss, l-le also ran in several track events. Another Japanese lnvasian? lt was just another morning in March or so we thought. But something was different. As we entered our first period classes, most of us found that ex- tra students were seated there, eager to learn. But they were not ordinary students, they had come from Japan. Were they spies? No. Lal4eview's Stu- dent Council sponsored the visitation of several Japanese students who, were on a two week tour of the United States. Their visit began on the West Coast, then they moved eastward, by the Grand Canyon, into the Garland! Rockwall area. After spending a day at LC, each with a different member of the Student Council, they spent the evening with other friends, visiting various places around the area such as Chili's and Photon. We all hope that they left here with an understanding of the American culture that they will never forget but always enjoy. This guy learned about Amerlco's ups . . , he . . . and downs. Awards Day With the closing of the year, students impatiently waited for the Awards Day Presentation. Many scholarships were awarded and other honors were given to the Senior Class of 1986. The highest scholarship winner was Chris Hunt, who received 567,000 to Tulane University through the ROTC scholarship fund. Other scholarship winners were Lisa Flori, who received 516,000 for Southwestern University, Wendy Smith, to NorthPark College for 520,000 and Cary Wilkinson, a scholarship for 510,000 to Abilene Christian University. Several full four year scholarships were awarded to students in athletics. Lance Brownlee, Jeff Grimes, Reagan Dill, Nick Scaglione, Mike Wynn, Clay Cain, Scott DeWees, Bubba Garcia, and Tim McCoy received full tuition in football. Basketball scholarships were awarded to Mallory Cheadle, Orlando Dennis, Tim Strange, and Nolan White. Tamme Mowery also received a gymnastics scholarship. A total of over 5498000 were awarded to the seniors of 1986. Out of 444 seniors, 79 were recognized as honor graduates. The top two graduating seniors were Kris Yoder and Saleem Virani. Kris was awarded a scholarship for over 536,000 for engineering at Southern Methodist University. Saleem received 520,000 in scholarships to attend S.M.U. Then, ofter o speech mode by the senior closs presi- dent, Kris Yoder, the slide show begon. Everyone wos reody for the music to begin, so Kidd Kroddick, o disc jockey from KEGL, storted the music with o populor song to the tune of West-End Girls. Later, they attended the Houston University Camp where they again were awarded Superior ribbons every day and the Spirit Stick for the week, The Cheerleaders were also nominated for the Award of Excellence and after making the finals, eventually were placed first runner-up. Individually, Junior Mary Meyer and Senior Wendy Whadley were nominated for All American Cheerleader. Besides attending these clinics, the Varsity Cheerleaders taught a very successful cheerleading clinic for girls under the Qth grade level.
