WAIT U TIL THE SUMMER'S GONE The commons area teemed with intense anticipation as the Patriots returned from their brief vacation. Excitement was in the air as everyone looked forward to the routine of stu- dent life. Already counting the days until Christmas Vacation, the students waited in line for their schedules. This was it - the beginning of school was in full swinig. The Seniors invaded Lakeview on Monday, August 13th, in a cloud of thunder as they prepared for their final year. This was to be their final year . . . their best ever. Bidding a farewell to summer, the juniors returned ready to face the second half of their high school career with open hearts and open minds. Having reached 'lupperclasshoodf' they looked forward to a fan- tastic third year at Lakeview. The sophomores progressed through the long lines with strideful boredom on Wednes- day. After heaving a sigh of distress or relief upon the sight of their schedules, they departed homeward for one more week of serenity. Many freshmen came to Lakeview on Thursday the 16th, gazing in the awe at the vastness of their new school. The class of l'88 had begun. Each student was ready to enter high school. Each of the four classes was united for the common cause of starting the 1984-85 school year off right. So with hearts bright and faces cheery, the students prepared for school. Displaying poise, charm, and Patriot Pride, Annette Baily prepares to perform for the new freshmen. H . A ' The cheerleaders truly enjoyed putting on their skit at the pep rally. Once again, Lakeview led the parade showcasing its fine organizations such as our Band, Sweethearts, Liberty Dolls, Cheerleaders, and our mascots, the Minutemen. Our school symbol, The Liberty Bell, also was in attendance to stir up Patriot Pride. This year there were many girls competing for the title of 1985 Miss Garland. Among these contestants were several from Lakeview that showed their true Blue and,Gold Pride in competition: Annette Baily, Pam lopffin, Lori Pallet, and ludy Vank, and Sherri White. ludy Vank was later crowned 1985 Miss Garland showing that Lakeview Centen- nial is a home of winners. As the day ended and peo- ple got ready to go back to their homes, the true spirit of home, the true spirit of the Labor Day was instilled in us all. Everyone's eyes were A little break dancing before the pep rally on the cheerleaders while the band led us in the Lakeview Fight Song. At the end of each pep rally, the multitudes rose to the sound of the Alma Mater. Well They Work Hard For The Money, all of Lakeview's vocational students. Each day many ambitious Lakeview students leave their patriot home to join other am- bitious people on the work force. The vocational program at Lakeview has a variety of jobs ranging from Day Care centers to Office work, depending on the type of work the proud patriot is out to learn. Whenever you notice a day care center, office building or those 'golden arches, just remember a patriot may be showing their pride in that building at that very moment. S of A Q i K l Qs , .... . - . The Hearthrobs led by Randy Bond, David Cox, Mike Cummings, Paul Przyborowiski, and Capt. Tomas Pearsons, danced their ways into all of our hearts. The Seniors scored the first touchdown followed by a comeback by the Juniors. Dur- ing half-time the crowning of the Powder Puff King and lunior Prince took place. Win- ner of these prestigious awards were King Tomas Pearsons and Prince Scott Deweese. The game ended with a tie be- tween the Seniors and the luniors. 7 -ff:7.3.,.'y, .... Aside from the food, lunchtime can be a pleasurable ex- perience. It gives us all a chance to communicate and relieve the pressures of the day thus far, We can catch up on the old gossip, start new gossip, do last night's forgotten homework, and prepare for upcoming tests. Oh, yeah we could eat, too. A fortunate few brought lunches from home, but the majority of students had to eat the cafeteria lunch. No casualties have yet resulted. This party consisted of dancing and a constant flow of loud music of all types ranging from pop to soul, but the favorite seemed to be UEGYP- TIAN LOVER . As the music played and the patriots got into the groove, a talent show was held. This was a chance for the students to show off their stuff and that is exactly what they did, and for doing so well they received a standing ovation. School studies are slightly forgotten as the hustle and bustle of Christmas draws nearer and nearer, Presents and seasons greetings are ex- changed, contests are held and a visit from Santa Claus makes it complete. Each class picks either a traditional theme or tries their hand at an original concept. The can drive contest is also held during this time. This year Lakeview set an outstanding record out of all four of the Garland Schools, collecting 7842 cans. These cans will later be distributed to the needed throughout Garland who surely appreciate the students generosity during the Holidays. P Q i A definite favorite this year '85 ln Review The 1984-85 school year was a great year for teenage happenings. Rock-n-Roll shone through with the release of many new albums. Early in the year, Zebra came out with No Tellinl Lies, a follow-up of their first album, and Iron Maiden gave us a new LP, Powerslave. Former Led Zeppelin members Robert Plant and limmy Page got together again with the Honeydrippers, but a reunion of reunions took place at the end of 1984 with Deep Purple and their album Perfect Strangers. Later, a controversy in Styx brought out solo efforts from vocalist Dennis DeYoung and guitaristfvocalist Tommy Shaw, Then, after almost two years of silence, REO Speed- wagon turned out Wheels are Turnin', and the Canadian trio, Triumph, returned to the Rock scene with the powerful Thunder Seven after a long dispute with their record label. Along with others, these groups toured the country and the world to promote their albums. First of all, over the summer, Dallas saw Texas lam '84 with headliner Rush, on their Grace Under Pressure tour. Also at the lam were Oz- zy Osbourne, .38 Special, Bryan Adams, and Gary Moore. Not able to appear at the lam as was tradition, Sam- my Hagar appeared at Reunion Arena in September. lefferson Starship, Zebra, and Night Ranger made it to Six Flags at the beginning of the year also, Big Reunion concerts of the year were Ronnie lames Dio, Reo Speedwagon, Triumph, and Kiss with Queensryche, Music was not the only thing going on. Blockbuster movies were hitting the screen one after another. One of the big- gest: Dune, and Sting's movie debut. Another rock star, Gene Simmons, starred with Tom Selleck in the movie Runaway, and Grace lones appeared with Arnold Schwartzenegger in Gonan, the Destroyer. Later in the year Eddie Murphy re- turned, after his disappointing appearance in Best Defense, with the hilarious Beverly Hills Cop, Whenever records, con- certs, and movies are brought up in the same thought, no one can forget Prince, and Purple Rain. Knocking Michael jackson off the pedestal and taking his place in the limelight, his album spent an astounding 24 weeks as 111 on the charts. The movie spent months at the theatres, bringing in massive crowds. Touring with Shiela E., Prince came to Dallas for three con- secutive nights, December 30 and 31, and bringing in the New Year on lan, 1, Not only had music and movies abounded but 1984 was an election year, too, and many Seniors cast their votes in November for their favorite of the two candidates, Walter Mondale and Ronald Reagan, who was running for his sec- ond term, Winning by a land- slide, as predicted, President Reagan was reinstated. The '84-'85 school year also marked the first year of House Bill 72, which made some major changes in the school format, including pep rallies, school day interruptions, and even an- nouncements, The Bill also added a few things, like tutorial services, all in order to return the emphasis of school to academics. Other events in- cluded the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the beginning of the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. These events played a part in all of our lives, and they are all things that we will not soon forget. in Mr. LeMaster leaves no doubt as to his candidate. Q2 ' The year gave us many Top-Selling albums F' House Bill 72 House Bill 72 was a new selected provision from an act passed by the 68th legislature. This new bill was affecting all of the students in many different ways. The bill passed a new policy con- cerning extracurricular ac- tivities, that states any stu- dent shall be unable to par- ticipate in any extracurricular activity sponsored by the school district if during the grade reporting period after a grade reporting period in which the students received a grade lower than a 70. The bill did not only change this, but also the amount of absences a student was allowed. A student could not be given credit for a class if the student had more than five days of unexcused absence during a semeter. School day interruptions are strictly frowned upon. This includes nonacademic ac- tivities such as an- nouncements and sales pro- motions. Announcements were limited to emergencies only after they had been made once during the day. Students could be promoted only on a student's academic achievement. To be promoted, a student had to maintain a grade average of 70 or he or she could not be given credit for the course. The matter that real- ly got the most attention of all actions taken was the new final examination policy. A student could not be exempted from an exam in any class which any other student was required to take afinal exam. Students were not the on- ly ones being affected by this bill, teachers were also affected by the new tutorial services being offered. A district could require a stu- dent whose grade in a sub- ject for a grade reporting period was lower than 70 on a 100 point scale to at- tend tutorials in the subject during the following report- ing period twice per week or more. This required each teacher to stay until 4:30 each day. Teachers could not have less than 8 days of inservice and preparation for each school year. Each school district had to pro- vide for no less than 175 days of instruction for students. This bill made the students much more alert and aware of their perfor- mance, grades and conduct. This year the bill was still new and the students were getting used to it. Hard Work pays off Students put forth effort to meet House Bill 72's new rules. . ,gf . The club members and officers discussed details for a possible trip to Cancun Mexico for the month after school released for summer break. Like all other groups throughout the state of Texas, the Spanish Club found it necessary to change many of its past activities to corres- pond with new regulations provided in House Bill 72. Among these changes was the cancellation of the annual Pads convention held in San Antonio. Football '8 The Lakeview l.V. football team, under the coaching of Eddie Henderson, Mark Lipscomb, and lack Catlett, finished the season with a 7-3 record. One of their first games of the season showed that the Patriots would not take defeat. Although not considered a district game, Lakeview stomped over the Newman Smith Trojans 35-00. Wes Rowden had four touchdowns and Billy Cianie added one more to that. Highland Park was next on Lakeviews list and not even the wet conditions could keep the Patriots from a win of 15-6. Rowden had 25 carries for 103 yards. Ron Hoover scored the Patriots first touchdown while Scoyt DeWees finished with yards on 5 carries and advanced the ball 18 yards on Hoover's touchdown play. Lakeview slid by the Mesquite Skeeters by a score of 21-17 as Rowden scored the opening touchdown of the game. He ended the game with 196 yards. Darrin Sharp, quarter- back, scored the second touchdown and finished the game with more than 300 yards passing. Rowden once again led the Patriots to another big victory over the Garland Owls, 21-6. Rowden had 80 yards on ten carries, and scored two touchdowns within minutes of each other. leff Gorden added the Patriots final touchdown and carried 15 times for 70 yards. L.C. earned a tough victory from district rivals North Mesquite with a 23-6 score. Gorden had a 30 yard touchdown and Lance Brownlee added the extra point. Brownlee had an ex- cellent game as he kicked a 41 yard field goal just before the end of the half. The last and biggest game of the season was the Patriots win over South Garland 27-7. The Patriots had several outstanding defensive plays and touchdowns were made by leff Gorden, with an 80 yard dash, Wes Rowden, and a pass play from quarter- back Shawn Kohler to Nick Eaton. Lakeview did not finish as high as many predicted. They had very many close games but whenever they won, they made it convincing. Lakeview lost 4th rank to Skyline by one point in over- time. The Patriots also lost to Wilmer-Hutchins by a score of 100-99 in overtime. ln the Grapevine tournament the Par- tiots proved themselves by beating Grapevine in a last minute, comeback victory. After they beat W. T. White, they went on to play Newman Smith for the tournament championship. The varsity beat Newman Smith twice in the season but could not beat them in this championship game. But the Patriots finished second in the tournament and Coach Fultz showed his ap- preciation by taking the team out to eat. Lakeview also placed 5th in the Greenville tournament by beating Denison and Newman Smith. The Lakeview Patriots were led by senior, Glen Walker, who was the high scorer and rebounder on the team. Walker never gave up in a game and always kept everyone from getting down on themselves during the game. This attitude rubbed off of Glen and onto the players quickly. This is one of the main reasons that the Patriots came back from behind so many times, even against top teams such as Highland Park and Skyline. Sophomore, Lewis Hicks, killed the boards by maintaining a good shooting percentage each game. Hicks dared to shoot against anyone which helped his confidence and con- trol. Though he is only 5'7, he had more game time than any other member of the team, and he will be a dominating factor in the season to come. junior, Phil Harding, was a clutch player for Lakeview, when the going got tough. Harding had 10 points in 3V2 minutes of the fourth quarter. Phil also showed much ag- gressiveness during the course of the season. Other players who also had an outstanding year were, junior William Meeks who led the district with assists even though he wasn't always a starter. He also showed great defensive ability against Highland Park when the Patriots were losing by 18 points. Lakeview pulled within three points of the Scots by daring steal attempts by Meeks. Orlando llRat Dennis domineered the long shot by hitting points when the team couldn't get the ball under the basket. juniors, Terrance Thomas, Nolan White, and Kenneth Henry came on strong f:2 . Thomas expressed his ability to play under pressure in games such as Highland Park and West Mesquite. Kenneth Henry was an excellent dribbler and passer. junior, Tim Strange was valuable in many situations. He was a leaping master that was responsible for dunks as well as goal tends. Though he hardly scored, he helped greatly on rebounds. Coach Fultz thinks highly of his jumping ability, but Tim would probably torture other teams if he improved his shooting. Seniors, Dennis Pear- cy and Ronnie Watkins helped the team with their experience. Ronnie Watkins was definitely the best hustler on the team and Pearcy popped the net many times with his outside shooting ability. Overall, the Patriots should have an excellent team next season. Basketball The Patriot j.V. had another great year. The 1984-85 Lakeview junior Varsity ended the season with an impressive 27-3 record. The team finished pre-district with a 16-1 record and was equally dominating in district with a mark of 11-2 which was good enough to earn the Patriots the district championship. During the year the Patriots competed in three tournaments winning the championship in two, and plac- ing second in the other. Lakeview was the host of the annual holiday classic and won the tourney with three straight victories. The victims were Woodrow Wilson C96-31j, North Mesquite 157-38j, and Skyline Q52-51j in the cham- pionship. The next tournament was at R. L. Turner. Lakeview again came out a champion, beating Pearce 59-50, Turner 69-58, and Richardson 67-65 in the championship game. The final tournament of the year was the Plano Tournament and found Lakeview opening up play with a 69-59 victory over Viner. Next came to a 44-33 victory over Plano East. The Championship game against Plano resulted in the Patriots' first loss of the season 66-59. Overall, Lakeview finished with a final record of 7-3-2. The Patriots had an outstanding defense, and goalie, Shawn Blakenship gave up an average of a little more than one goal a game. Mark Cupp led the offense with most goals scored. Cupp had six goals against Garland and 3 goals against Rockwall. Randy Bond end- ed the season as the second leading scorer on the team, Senior, Pravin Moodley, had an outstanding year on defense and was thought to be a key player in keeping the balls away from the goal. Coach Meunz contributes this year's success to excep- ional talent and depth. l'This year we've got six or seven girls that we can put up on each event. Which keeps the team competitive. Some of our first year girls have really pushed the older girls for their spots in the line up. Some of our younger athletes like Cynthia Fryar, Cindy haris, lennifer Herald, Cindy Herald, Stacy Crossley, and ina Anger will develop into a fine competitive team in the fears to come. While the girls were busy winning their meets,-the young nexperienced Lakeview boys' team was developing into a iuture state-championship team. Coach Meunz says: Our team was made up almost entirely of first year gymnasts who were either freshmen or sophomores. These boys im- proved tremendously during the season. Dutstanding all-around athletes who competed this year ivere Alan McGrath, Stephen Schneider, Doug Brennan, vtike Strange, and leff Garmon. The team score improved over 50 points this season. This tan be greatly attributed to hard work and dedication from athletes such as Alan Buck, Doug Lee, Barry Carlson, Chad mith and Aldo Blackstock. Coach Meunz was really enthusiastic about the potential n this year's and next year's gymnastics team. With more End more people trying out for gymnastics the program will ecome the state powerhouse. I Q Tennis Team The Lakeview Centennial Tennis Team did better than many expected this year. Though the team did not have the personnel to compete with most schools they still had the confidence to and the motiva- tion to face the opponent with a good attitude. The players each put in much hard work and effort - practicing an ex- cruciating number of hours. Another reason for the teams slow season was because of their youth. The team only had one senior this year. There were high points for Lakeview, too. We dominated the llcities team this year, Garland High School. Coach Hood suspects Robb Creebon, and jeff Seals to improve and give Lakeview much success in the future. Brad Shoemaker and Leslie Price had a great year and are two that Coach Hood thinks very highly of. Coach Hood says he's trying to keep a low profile. Don't let him slip away because he may lead the best tennis team Lakeview has had in six years. Saliem Virani practices a game of doubles.
