188 SPORTS Roundballers have big shoes to fill After compiling a 25-9 record in 1979-80 and winning the first half district champion- ship, this year's Patriot basketball team had big shoes to fill. The Patriots returned 5 members from last year's fine squad along with seven members of last year's junior varsity team. Two year letter- man, 6'7 , Jeff Culbreth brought size and a fine shooting touch at the post position. Charles Clark returned at point guard along with Mike Franks, Jeff Barger and Bruce Brookins. These men were back for another year at the forward positions. The versatility of 6'4 junior Mike Wiebold allowed him to play guard and forward, as well as post. Ron Rollinson, Rob Mowery and Bobby White saw action at the wing positions. Wade King and Tommy Epting occupied guard posi- tions. The Pats started off with a lopsided 56-36 win over the W.T. White Longhorns on Novem- ber 15. Next, they lost a 68-56 decision to Dal- las Skyline in three overtimes. The Richardson Eagles handed the Pats their second loss with a 67-57 win. The Lake Highlands Wildcats lowered the Patriots record to 1-3 with a 59-42 win. The Pats broke their slump with a 44-43 win over Newman-Smith, Bruce Brookins' layup at the buzzer provided the victory. In their finest game of the season the Patri- ots soundly defeated the Berkner Rams, 66- 48, to even their record at 3 wins and 3 defeats. The Pats participated in the Irving Invita- tional December 4-6 and returned home with the second place trophy. In the opening round they got revenge on an earlier loss to Lake Highlands and defeated the Cats 47-44. In the semi-final game against Thomas Jef- ferson, the Pats held T.J. to seven points in the first half and led 24-7 at intermission. Lakeview held on for a 52-38 win and a berth in the championship game. The Pats placed their four game winning streak on the line in the championship game against Irving MacArthur. The Cardinals jumped out to a 31-11 lead and never looked back as they knocked off the Patriots 61-43. The North Dallas Bulldogs overshadowed a 27 point performance by Culbreth and defeated the Pats 67-56. The Patriots got back on the winning track with a 50-49 victory over Seagoville. .L v-v L-5' fa., f. 2: . f I1 till ,41.lW75l lilac Y in l 'M ra.-:ff Row 1 QL to Rl: Charlie Hardin jManagerl, Wade King, Steve Wllllams, Bruce Brookins, Tommy Ept- ing, Mike Franks, Chrls Garrett fTralnerl Row 2: Coach Beach, Charles Clark, Jeff Barger, Ron Rollin- son, Jeff Culbreth, Mlke Wiebold, Rob Mowery, Bobby White, Coach Fultz. --.
