THE SENIOR CLASS OF LAKETON HIGH SCHOOL Presents the 1959 LAKETONIAN Progress in Action DEDICATION In accordance with our theme, Progress in Action, we wish to dedicate the 1959 LAKETONIAN to our trustee of the last eight years, Mr. Clarence B. Schuler, because of the many things made possible in our school in the Progress of Education during that time. We appreciate very much these many improvements, and especially the most recent--the construc- tion of the new building for the cafeteria, the kindergarten, and grades 1, 2, and 3, and the new Indus- trial Arts and Agriculture Building. By the construction of these two new buildings, other improvements were made possible this year--a different, larger, and modern music room, a different science room with new modern equipment, and new shower rooms and lockers for the Athletic Department. Although we have these many new and wonderful improvements this year, we cannot overlook im- provements of the other years, which also added greatly to the Progress of Education in our school. Some are these: New modern desks for the grade children, new tables and equipment for the Agriculture De- partment, remodelling the home economics room and adding new equipment and getting new typewriters for the Commerce Department, including an electric typewriter. Also, we have new studies in the high school, and new teachers have been added to the school staff. We are also very proud of our new kinder- garten, for it is the first in a township school in our county. All of these improvements, and any omitted, have been greatly appreciated and in the Spirit of Progress we wish Mr. Schuler much happiness in his future years. We started our schooling in 1947. Oh, how well we should remember this important year. Little did we realize at this early age that the molding of our education, which would be with us the rest of our lives, had begun. As freshmen, how well we will always remember all the initiations! We somehow managed to make it through. Starting into high school was really a big step to us. Trying to find the different class rooms and get there on time was all a part of our freshmen year. Before we knew it we were sliding into our sophomore year. This year we were finally adjusted to high school and were sponsoring a skating party. We received our class sweaters, also. Then all of a sudden we were juniors and presenting our first play, The Cannibal Queen. One of the best things we will always remember is the wonderful time we had decorating for the Junior-Senior Prom. Having our first cafe- teria supper, which was quite a memorable thing, was all a part of this junior year. Receiving our class rings was really an exciting moment to us. We worked, but we will always hold precious to us all the fun and good time we had together. At last the year we thought would never get here, finally came. The best year of all, our Senior Year!! We were busiest of all when our senior year rolled around. We were working as hard as we could to raise money for our senior trip. Selling magazines, Christmas cards, and annuals, and giving a play, were all a part of our senior year. Planning our trip which we had looked forward to for so many years was really a full time project. Making graduation plans was really a climax to our wonderful times we had at L. H. S. I’d rather be a good farmer than a millionaire. Looking Into The Future We, the members of the prophecy committee, in the year 1975, were cruising around in the iono- sphere in our space ships to make a survey of the class of '59, and this is what we have discovered: Steve Purdy, due to his ability to open his mouth so wide in Mixed Chorus, is now working as Elvis Presley's hound dog. Wilbur Wolf, the great mathematician, now the owner of Hurly-Burly Jets, Incorporated, is flying to the moon every hour on the hour. Jackie Flack's two outstanding qualities, her ability to attract male attention and her singing voice, have made her latest record, Lover Come Back to Me, a smash hit with the male audience. Mike Hileman, who has always been a hot- rodder with a cruising speed of 175 M.P.H. in his hot Ford, is now driving in the 500 mile race held in Stringtown, (and is coming in in last place). Janet Brubaker, with her flaming red hair, is now appearing in a Broadway show in New York. She is the renowned Flamin' Marne'! Delores Neher, due to her driving ability is now test pilot for Ace Auto Sales, and on holidays, she teaches Drivers' Training to the cast of the Romper Room. Carolyn Kline, always the quiet one, is now portraying the role of Sylvia Silent, in Willie Gig- gle's Old Time Moviehouse. Ralph James, due to his capacity as a speaker, is now the head of Ralph’s Oratorical Society in Timbuctoo. Eddie Hampton, during his term of serving at the Senior Candy Stand, acquired an ability to run a stand, and is now running Ze Olde Candy Shoppe in the suburbs of Ijamsville. Junior Hoover always managed to stay out of trouble, yet do what he wanted. He is now run- ning a casino in Reno, Nevada, called Junior's Jive. Jane Bucher, always eager to learn, is now climbing the ladder of success by painting stair steps in the basement of the Empire State Building. Ken Beachler, the Sportsman, is now in part- nership with Yogi Bear, (a Huckleberry Hound cartoon) and as a team they tour the township on their world famous skates. Wendy Susie Fryer has opened a new field in the beauty business--cutting hair with pinking shears. It gives you that jagged look. Sharon Dickerhoof has always had a craze for writing themes and has joined with some famed cartoonists in writing Shabby Sharon's Safari through Siam. Ruth Evans has contracted a partnership with a Slenderella School, and has invented a new reducing machine called the De-obeser. Mildred Entsminger, after getting so much practice fighting off all those boys, has become the Men's and Women's World Lightweight Boxing Champion. Connie Smith and her steady beau have final- ly gotten around to saying those vows. Now, they are following a family tradition by raising little bus drivers. Helen Ebbinghouse, with her tiny waist, has been employed by Murphy's Dime Store in North Manchester. She is the head of the belt model- ing department. Beth Moyer, a city girl, who always had an understanding with the teachers of L.H.S., is now President of Moyer Life Insurance Company. Judianne Clark, since graduating, has changed her last name and opened a beauty shop. Her most frequent customers are her two lovely daughters. Becky Ayres has achieved her long-awaited goal. She is now steering in steers at the Steer Inn.” Charles Kelly was always a leader while in school, and is now using this quality to explore the craters on the dark side of the moon. Since we are running out of fuel, we must close our survey. SPONSORED BY Ruppel's Records and Gifts North Manchester, Indiana The Junior Class presented their play on Wednesday evening, October 22, in the high school auditorium. The play, a full length religious comedy, was based on the same novel from which the outstanding Warner Brothers' motion picture was made When Rev. Spence, his wife, and their teen-age children came to the dilapidated parsonage at Laketon, it was quite a shock, but that's only the beginning. Rev. Spence found the church building starting to disintegrate, and the congregation split into warring factions. Eileen and Hartzell became pretty disgusted at leaving a better town for this run-down place, but then Hart- zell meets pretty Louise, and Eileen meets Ronny the football captain. Near the end of the play the congregation builds a new church and parsonage, which made the new pastor and his family very happy. The surprising, whirlwind conclusion rang down the curtain on an inspiring, and yet laugh-packed even- ing's entertainment. We wish to express our sincere thanks to Mrs. Shirley Cree for her helpful guidance and patience as director of our play, and to Kay Zobrosky as our student director. ¥ WHERE THERE'S A WILL The Senior Class presented their play on Friday evening. April io, 1959, in the high school auditor- ium. The play, Where There's A Will, was a comedy in three acts. The play had a clean, whole- some plot that fairly bristled with laugh-getting lines and ludicrously funny situations. An eccentric old man died and he bequeathed almost all of his money to his niece, Lorna, provided that she continued to tell the truth until she was 21, and also that she doesn’t marry or fall in love before that time. Com- plications arose out of jealousy, developed fast and furiously and all hands plotted against Lorna to make her tell lies, and also fall in love. It was delicious fun and had a farcial plot that helped to make this play one of the most delightful ever performed. We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to Mr. Ralph Boyer for directing our play. Standing: Wilbur Wolf, Mildred Entsminger, Ruth Evans, Charles Kelly, Susie Fryer, Jun- ior Hoover, Janet Brubaker, Steve Purdy. Seated: Mike Hileman, Becky Ayres, Sharon Dickerhoff, Ralph James, Jackie Flack. Senior Class Play Sponsored by THE HECKMAN BINDERY INC.
