Every day is a busy day as he talk; with students and the faculty about all kinds o; events and activities for the school day. Priiicipal Heads School Operation Mr. Jackson has many conferences during his busy day. No matter how important or vital the topic, he tries to make the people he is talking with as comfortable as possible. Many important decisions are made over a friendly cup of coffee. Here he is conferring with Mr. Wittmer, staff assistant; Mrs. Messerschmidt, school secretary; Mrs. Bobilya, school secretary; and Mr. Smuts, industrial arts supervisor. 1373395 Mr. Wittmer as our staff assistant works right alongside with Mr. Jack- son. N •v ' l J In her five years at Lakeside Mrs. Ethel Bellinger, our matron, has looked through many panes of glass in her efforts to keep them bright and shiny. Busy Hands Behind Lakeside Preparing those delicious meals are Ida Zies, Pauline Carmine, Dorothy Booth, Hazel Hartley, Lenora Block, Mary Bogan, Juanita Berryhill, and Juanita Hicks. Library students use the library for reference, study, and reading recreation. Study Hall And Library Facilitate Studying Soon after the 7:50 bell in the morning, the library is crowded with people. Some wish to check out books while others are return- ing or renewing theirs. After school the library is much the same. Many people come in for reference books for themes and reports. Mrs. Johnson, our school librarian, is always busy even though she gets a lot of help from the student librarians. These helpers do most of the work at the desk checking books and filing cards. Mrs. Johnson, however, does most of the recording for files and records. 10 English is extremely important for we use it every day of our lives. In the seventh grade we partici- pate in Developmental Reading. This improves reading comprehen- sion and rate and teaches study habits. Developmental Language taken in the eighth grade improves skills in speech and writing. An English course consisting of liter- ature and using skills learned in previous years is taken in the ninth grade. English Mrs. Stuelpe ' s English class is made interesting by varied assign- ments. Dev. Lang. Mr. Kaufman instructs students in grammar skills in Developmental Language class. Dev. Reading Mrs. Witsaman ' s Developmental Reading class develops and improves reading skills. 11 The foreign languages offered at Lakeside are Latin, Spanish, and French; taking one of these languages is both interesting and informa- tive. Our three fine for- eign language teachers make this part of the cur- riculum enjoyable. By learning one of these lan- guages we not only mas- ter the language, but also become more a c c o m - plished in our English. With the new books and teaching aids now avail- able, learning is made easier, more enjoyable, and more interesting. Spanish Spanish class is helpful in creating good self-discipline. Latin Mr. Schott ' s Latin class studies earnestly in order to achieve language skills. French Basic French is taught in Mr. Koegel ' s class. 12 Astronomy Biology Mr. Feaser ' s Astronomy classes find there ' s more than one thing to do under the stars. Biology is one of the most informative classes in the curriculum. It is taught by Mr. Anderson and Mr. Karonovich. Science: Key Interest In School Curriculum Science Science plays an impor- tant part in the life of a student at Lakeside. In the 7th and 8th grade, every student takes Gen- eral Science. General Sci- ence stimulates interest in science, a field of study which many students may pursue for a career. In 9th grade every student has a choice between Gen- eral Science and Biology. Biology provides a firm foundation for more spe- cialized studies of organic sciences. Mrs. Beckner ' s science classes explore the many worlds of science. 13 Mathematics is a moving subject. It has been progressing since the beginning of man. This year the Lakeside students have been carry- ing on this progress by learning and using old and new methods. Many of the seventh graders are finding new. hoi ' izons in their study of modern math. Some eighth and ninth grade students are learning about the immensities of the study of algebra. A few ninth graders are studying Euclidean style geom- etry. All students are furthering their knowledge for use in the years ahead. General Math In General Mathematics students learn basic ideas of math. Lancers Apply Mathematical Skills Algebra Algebra abilities are enhanced in Mr. Trott ' s class. Geometry Mr. Lesb has a busy hour with his double X geome- try class. He spends the hour explaining assump- tions, theories, and geometric figures. 14 Home Arts j Seventh graders learn the methods of home arts from Mr. Eckart. Home Economics Girls leam basic skills of home economics in Miss French ' s class. Lancers Obtain Skills In Future Home Talents Shop Shop class delves into woodwork, metalwork, electricity, and plastics. There are three basic parts to Lakeside ' s vocational arts pro- gram. Industrial arts is taught to all eighth grade boys and some ninth grade boys. They are taught the basic use and knowledge of tools. Home economics is taught to all eighth grade girls and some ninth grade gii ' ls. Home arts is taught to all seventh graders entering Lakeside. Students are instructed in common household repairs, good grooming, proper diet, and other aspects of their immediate environment in home arts. Social Studies The knowledge of Indiana ' s and America ' s history and also world geography are major goals for the seventh and eighth grade social studies students. In the seventh grade social studies class they learn about Indi- ana ' s history and government. They also travel across the oceans to learn about world geography. The eighth grade class sails back home and discovers America. They are taken through several periods of his- tory from the founding of the thirteen original American colonies up to the present day. Phys. Ed. One! Two! One! Two! is the sound from the gym as active physical educa- tion classes begin a class period designed to in- crease physical fitness. Boys receive instruction in football, basketball, and other worthwhile sports from Mr. Adams and Mr. Kaufman. Girls are in- structed by Mrs. Wakely and Mrs. Travis in courses such as football apprecia- tion, soccer, basketball, Softball, and social danc- ing. All classes are designed to build body strength, endurance, and co-ordination, and also aid in breaking the monotony of sometimes monotonous school days. 16 .• HKfc The Many Faces Of Lakeside t Most Perfect Lady and Gentlem Pam Phillips gives a ladylike smile to Brad Meyer as he gallantly assists her with her chair.
