RAM Tnrs 'Q 37 LAKESIDE RAMS . IS THIS IT? For years Lakeside has been known as the school with IT all. To many outsiders, this school represents strict rules, difficult classes, snobbery and a lot of money. But to the students and faculty, It is deHned in a much different wa y. It is striving to be the best. Many people misinterpret this desire to be snobbery. La- kesiders are unique from other people be- cause they possess a special kind of class. Not a class exemplified by money, but one obtained through a superb education that was administered by an elite group of peo- ple - caring people. As in past years, everyone throughout the year was striving to obtain that quality mark. Perhaps IT was making the A, win- ning the game, or performing without a flaw. Maybe IT was that special friend. Whatever IT was, it was certainly obtained with a flare that only Lakesiders possess and understand. ' F ' -1 gg i f ' lr -- 'F ? Somewhere around February of every year, students of all ages and grades have one thought on their mind - SUMMER. Summer means many things to many peo- ple. To some it means tanning, to others it means skiing and swimming, but to most it means just plain old 'getting out of school. Many students don 't want to get out in the sun and sweat for a tan, but for those who do, the rewards are great. These dedi- cated tanners achieve that highly sought- after deep, dark, healthy look. As they say, No Pain, No Gainu, the motto of the disciples of the sun. Although getting a tan isn't much fun by itself, it can be made much easier if one goes to the lake. Lake'2 probably one of the most com- mon words in the English language throughout the months of June, July, and August. The lake can not only cool you off, but also provide hours of enjoyment. Senior Brian Barkley recalls, I can 't even begin to tell you hw much time Mickey, Cogs, and I spent out on the lake swim- ming, skiing, and just lying around this summer. Although swimming, skiing, and tanning are fun for some, getting out of school is fun for all. School becomes monotonous and boring at times, this is why summer is so eagerly awaited by students of all ages. Summer- time means sleeping late, staying out late,- Who can imagine ha ving fun on a Monday night?-, and just basically doing what you want to do. Summering is fun while it lasts, but by the end of the summer most students are ready to go back to school. For without school to come back to, summer wouldn't be as special as it is. Shannon and Da vid sharing some great times gli 1 Mickey and Chris show their enthusiasm for together. summer. Rivera, A is French students were afforded the opportunity to join Mrs. Heck in an exciting trip to Europe this past June. This sixteen-day tour included such highlights as Versailles Palace, Chartres Cathedral, Mont St. Michel, and the Normandy Cemetary. Cities such as London, Paris, Nice Monaco, and Geneva were also visited. One of the interesting aspects to this trip was the chance to observe different cultures and their people. Since the majority of time spent on this tour was in France, Mrs. Hecks French students were able to see the French language in action as well as participate in it. This particular trip allowed one to get a taste of Eur- ope. It was deHnitely a memorable ex- perience. A second group, the Lakeside Stu- dent Council ofticers, escorted by Mr. Paul Quattlebaum tra veled to Provi- dence, Rhode Island for their Na tional Association of Student Council Con- vention. After touring Providence, the group traveled to Washington, DC, vis- iting such places as the Whitehouse, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Cen- ter, and Arlington Cemetery. While in Washington, Mr. Quattlebaum and the student council officers were able to enjoy the Fourth of July festivities. After a pick- nic lunch in the mall area of DC, this group was able to see a performance of the Beach Boys and Julio Iglesias. On their way home, they visited the homes of James Madison in Virginia and Andrew Jackson in Tennessee. Not only being educational and interesting, this trip was fun. Another group traveling this summer from Arkansas was eight students who visited England for a chance to play tennis to tour- naments held in Creigleigh and Felixstow. Accompanied by Coach .lack Bridges, they found playing tennis on grass a great chal- lenge. The group spent the majority of time touring in London and also shopped at Her- rods. Hopefully you can join in these unique experiences with these students. TRAVELI . . . ERYO E'S DREAM AM Tnrs 'Q 37 Wi y Mrs. Heck is that you behind those Foster Grants? First-find a car, second-get together with a friend, or two or three, third-crank up the radio, and fourth- E head for town. The usual run is down Central Ave- nue. Back and forth go all the local teens. McDonalds is a favorite place, but the Hot Spot is definitely Sonic. Here you can find out whois in town, who they are with, and where all the parties are. You see friends from differ- ent schools, or those who do not attend V' school. Of course, no cruising trip would be complete without at least one trip around the fountain. The fountain is a turning point for most cruisers and then it's back to Sonic, McDonalds, or K- Mart for the get-together and swapping of rides. Then off you go again, falling i into a routine. What fun! What excite- ment!! It's downtown Hot Springs at night. 4 4' my 'tial ' -- Lamar wants you to go cruising with him. M 10 ' Dana can't you get Bee to pick you up? This type of activity does not require a large amount of knowledge nor a great deal of money. This kind of past-time can be performed with just a few or many people. However, the most appealing char- acteristic of this avoca tion is that many friends, as well as good relationships can be made while one participates in it. The re- laxed, easy-going atmosphere that accom- panies playing allows a person to lay aside both the pressures of school and society. We are all put upon this earth for a purpose. For everyone, one obligation is to touch another personis life in a positive way. By utilizing the opportunity that playing provides, we can all fulfill our obligation. Hopefully, playing and enjoying life will be it for all of us. Becky Bernard not only playing dangerously, but living dangerously. ev, Bill? ' ' l F. if-Q u ! But do the fans fully understand how much hard work goes into being a successful athlete? Whatever sport you want to excel in takes an extensive amount of practice to be suc- cessful in it. Along with physical condi- tioning fline drills, cross countryj, an ath- letes mind must also be in good mental condition. Positive expectations, confi- dence, concentration, a dehnite goal, the ability to deal with failure, and commit- ment inust also accompna y a physically tit body. Under Hrst year head coach .lim Cox, the 1984-85 Lakeside Ram football team, compiled a 2-8 record with wins over Greenbrier and Sheridan. Coach Cox feels though that the games lost were very well fought and were really close. Coach Cox attended Greenwood High School in Arkansas. His talents though were not limited to just the football field. He also played on the basketball and base- ball teams during his high school years. After graduation in 1973, he continued his education at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia where he also continued playing football. The positions he played 1 Terry Tom Mike and Grayson work overtime Defense Attack!!!! were mostly defensive, such as defensive linebacker, but he also Hlled in as the back-up fullback. This year, the Ram team, started their practices early in August. At the start of the practices, the team consisted of only 26 people but later on added 12 more team members, ending up with 38 players. Dur- ing the 2 to 3 hour practices, the Rams worked on conditioning and getting in the best shape possible. Of course, the coaches made sure of this with weights and a little bit of running to go along also. Besides conditioning the team also had to work on learning an all new offense and defense. When school started, the team continued practicing during 6th period and after school. When the seasons over, many players continue to work on conditioning and improving their skills. They were a very good group to work with and I had a good bunch of senior leaders. They worked really hard, but I wish for the seniors we could have gone out with a better record. Our Congratulations goes out to David Baker and Lamar Trieschmann for mak- ing All-District, for this is a great accom- plishment. We also extend our Congratu- lations to Kenny Meece, Terry Carter, Randy Hill, Bee Albright, Jody Fish, and Mike McCurry for receiving Honorable Mentions. Adams graduated from Mississippi County High School where he participat- ed in basketball, track and baseball with basketball being his main sport. He re- ceived the All-State basketball award. After high school, he furthered his educa- tion at UCA where he was a member of the basketball team. Coach Adams has had two coaching jobs before coming to Lakeside. From 1979-80, he coached at ASU in Beebe and from 1980-83 he coached at Beebe High School. This year the Rams participated in the OBU tournament. The Hrst round the boys met Sheridan. We played one of our better games against Sheridan, Coach Adams admitted, thus defeating the yel- lowjackets, 41-29. In the second round, the Rams faced the Wildcats of North Little Rock Ole Main. Although we were out manned, we were able to compete with the AAAA school before Hnally losing by 14 points. 3' In the District Tournament, the Rams met White Hall in the opening round. They had defeated the Bulldogs twice al- ready in conference play. We had a poor shooting average Hrst-half and were down by 11 points going into the locker room at halfltime. But our guys showed a great deal of character by making a hard run at White Hall and ending the season with a COACH ADAMS 32-24 loss. COACH REYNOLDS Y The 1985 Golf team had an outstanding season. Early in the season, the Golf team ran off eight straight tournament victories, one of which was a victory over the class AAAA State Champions, Benton. The team finished the regular season with a record of 11 tirst and 2 second place Hn- ishes. Brett Foote, Bayard Gilbert, Mike Broyles, and JJ Miller each earned indi- vidual medalist honors in at least one regu- lar season tournament. At the District Tournament in Little Rock, the Rams ran away with the 5AAA South Championship by 20 strokes. Brett Foote was conference medalist for the third straight year and Mike Broyles was Runner-up medalist. The State Tournament was held at Hot Springs Country Club where the Rams fin- ished fourth. This was a very encouraging finish for team that will return 3 of its top 4 players. A TRACK The 1984-85 Senior boys and girls track teams were small in numbers, but not small in desire. Both teams worked really hard this year. The girls team, coached by Jerry Rob- erts, was made up of' six girls. They were Senior Betsy Gillham, Junior Tanya King, and four sophomores: Vicki Skelton, Ka- ren Wenner, Dana Breshears, and Nicole Turner. A philosophy was adopted by the team that they would compete in areas of achievement which were mostly sprints and relays. We always finished among the top competitors. Having a young team we expect to do even better next year, Coach Roberts replied. The girls Hnished 3rd place in the 400 M relay and the 400 M dash 5th in the 800 M relay, and 6th in the High Jump during the District Meet. The cheerleaders present their skit for the 1984 Football Homecoming Royalty. The 1984-85 Varsity Cheerleaders, sponsored by Mrs. Roberts, started the year in Jonesboro, Arkansas. There they attended summer camp. They were award- ed the lst place trophy and Heather Horner was awarded All-American Cheerleader. This award enabled her to cheer in Hawaii at the Aloha Bowl this last Christmas. Later on they competed in the Garland County Cheerleading Championship where they took home the lst place trophy. They received runner-up in the 3A divi- sion of the state competition and from there went on to compete in the state Hn- als. The cheerleaders provided a lot of spirit and support, not only in pep assemblies and games, but also in school. For this we thank them and wish them the best of luck next year.
