oday in 1978, Lakeside students have a deter- mined loyalty for their school, yet they don't seem to realize how Lakeside was born. A tiny seed was planted, nur- tured, and it thrived. The proof of that seed is found in Lakeside today as students are educated and enjoy their teenage years. But where did it all begin? The Ram Staff of '78 would like for you to travel back in time to 1927 when three very small in- dependent rural schools - Shady Grove, Spurlin, and Sul- phur - consolidated to form Lakeside. At that time the freshly born Lakeside met a newly erected red brick building. The friendly brick school was actually quite small, but it easily accomodated the entire population of the school. In the first years, grades one through ten attended and by 1931 Lakeside had its first sen- ior class fwith only 3 membersj. Naturally, a mascot had to be adopted by this staunch new school. A school meeting was held, and several names were suggested. But of the numerous suggestions, one name seemed to stand out. That name, of course, was the Rams, which was suggested by Mr. Bill Simp- son, the boys' basketball coach. Everyone present at that meet- ing must have felt that the name, Rams , would represent their new school well because they decided to accept the sug- gested name.
