and II, Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Advanced Math. Representatives from schools of engineering and technical in- stitutes talked to advanced math students about careers. Mrs. McDaniel's general math classes worked on income tax pre- paration for both the long and short forms. In the spring all the math teachers attended a metric workshop along with middle school and elementary teachers. Objectives of the math de- partment are: To help each student comprehend the structure of math, its laws and principlesg to provide an opportunity for developing computational skills and an understanding of math conceptsg to create a desire for further study in the field of math. Willie Hooks teaches Algebra II, Plane Geometry, and Advanced Mathg Rebecca McDaniel teaches General Math Il and Plane Geometryg Lou Slcrodenis teaches Algebra I5 Mark Smith teaches General Math I. SCIENCES-Offered in this section are General Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The science department is still slowly working on the Environmental Classroom and hope by late spring to have the first section completed with two bridges constructed by the industrial arts department and two classrooms. They hope to continue the project with completion of the dam to create a water study area and the continuation of trails to incorporate a larger forested area. The Science Club is being formed to facilitate the completion of the environmental classroom and create interest anew in the sci- ence fair. Educators LANGUAGE ARTS-Courses in Language Arts include English I, II, III, and IV, Speechl and II, and Drama. Mrs. Trezdwav believes in reading as a regular pleasurable hobby. I-Ier students subscribe to three separate book clubs each month and discuss current paperback titles. She believes Romeo and Juliet will be one thing her students will remember about Room 106. Her students realize that this famous couple was their age and faced the same problems they do with parents and life in general. Her sophomores enjoyed a field trip to KBI-IS and received free records and bumper stickers. They planned a visit to the county jail before they all ended up there. Debate was added as a course in the Speech Department this year with five teams preparing cases on the National high school topic for 76-77: Resolved: That a comprehensive pro- gram of penal reform be adopted throughout tne United States. In addition to library research and a field trip to Tucker Prison, several resource people were invited to speak to the class. These included: Clay White, FBI Agent, Tim Baltz, Public Relations Director for the Arkansas Correctional institutions, Louis Longinotti, local attorney, Gene Matthews, local attorney, Bob I-Iargraves, Juvenile judge for Garland County. English teachers are: Charlene Shehane, CP English, Marilyn Markell, CP English, Sue Goodwin, English 12, Sue Grant, and Deloris Muammar, English 11, Vallee Heck and Rachel Treadway, English 10, Sondra Wasson and Mrs. Tread- wav. English 9. Mrs. Shehane teaches Speech I and II, Drama and Debate. SOCIAL SCIENCES-Courses in the social sciences include Civics, World History, American History, Consumer Economics American Government, and Economics. The Civics classes took field trips to City Hall and Garland County Court. American History classes saw films pertaining to history, and Mr. Wenner came and showed a film on Mt. View, Arkansas. Also, Mrs. Inez Cline, Garland County Historian, was a guest speaker. jim Bledsoe teaches world history and consumer economics, Richard Payton teaches American History and American Government, Phil Arman teaches American Govern- ment, lim Wasson and Lee Alexander teach Civics. FOREIGH LANGUAGE-The Foreign Language Department offers French I and II, and Spanish I and Il. French classes participated in the state contest and festival this year. Thirteen students entered the declamation andlor skit competition on levels I and II. Mrs. Alexander teaches Frenchl and II, Mrs. Markell teaches Spanish I and II. BUSINESS EDUCATION-The Business Department is grow- 3 ing with three bookkeeping classes and four typing classes. The general business class has seen lots of films, both on business and on careers. The first semester they started a career unit which is finished the secon semester. This enables stu- dents to study about a career in which they are interested utilizing the career files in the counseling center and in the library. First thing injanuary general business and bookkeeping students spend about two weeks on income tax learning about tax laws and how to fill out the short and long forms. Short- hand students are lucky to have the use of the language lab second semester to practice dictation at various rates enabling them to work at their own individual speeds. The personal typing class allows students to learn to type for their own use ' and many students from all typing classes typed their junior and Senior themes and other reports in the typing room and on their own typewriters.
