Memoriam To Ben Bogard Lakeside lost a dear friend this year in Mr. Ben Bogard, Middle School Counselor. Many of us were blessed to have had him as a counselor and friend. Mr. Bogard was an energetic, happy person who loved Lakeside, and his glow of warmth reached all who knew him. He came to Lakeside' in 1960 as a social studies teacher. In his 16 years at Lakeside he served as sponsor of the freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class . He was sponsor of the store workers and the student council. His voice was heard on the radio and over the loud speaker at almost every football game held. He attended almost all of the sports events and kept score at basketball games . He served as maintenance director, as well as counselor, and could be seen many summers and after hours painting, building fences, cleaning, and generally keeping things in good order. In 1965 the annual dedication to Mr. Bogard read as follows: ln return for the priceless gifts of knowledge and inspiration he has bestowed on us--it is our way of expressing our gratitude and sincere appreciation for all that he has done as a teacher in Lakeside High School. Mr. Bogard will be missed at Lakeside, but we should not grieve as we know that he, in his optimistic way, would want us to carry on. The 1977 RAMSTAFF dedicates this book as a memoriam to Ben Bogard. . . -3' The past season saw the end of an era in Lakeside Foot- ball, It also saw one of the worst win-loss records in school history. School spirit was at an all-time low. Famous yells like All for Lakeside, stand up and holler resulted in about half the group standing. Another traditional Lakeside cheer, That's the Lakeside Battle Cry, produced loud screams from each individual class but not very loud for the Lakeside Battle Cry. This indicates a lack of unity, a unity that some of us can look back on with great pride. Let's examine the Ram Football Roots and see if we can't dig what a good school we have. CLASS B-From 1949 through 1960 the Rams won 84, lost 32, tied 3 for a 72W. They ' won 4 district titles during this time including 3 straight 1 s undefeated season plus a 38- game Win- Foot ,slab-Q4 mv 1 7.x-3?r+fgc , t . . .. ,. 3 I ' ' K . Ain ' KH? 1,12 . Next year the Rams look for- ward with great hope as they enter into Region V-AAA. For a football team to be a good group, members of the Senior Class have to be the leaders because of their maturity and experience. They cannot achieve success without a positive attitude from the junior and sophomore members of the team. The football team members cannot be successful unless they are motivated by parents, faculty, and their everyday classmates and that goes for every other organization in school also. So I urge you if .,.. W I uf. g t - away' V'-ft, l ' f-'Hearn wiv' , y , 'isis .farm M -P Q5 wif .ilt:'M .Pg :343'f?V1'1i ning streak. During this period the 1956 team only allowed 7 points in a 10-game schedule, the best defensive record in school history. CLASS A-From 1961 through 1969 the Blue and Gold won 61, lost 26, tied 9 for a 7OM. These years produced 5 dis- trict titles, one undefeated season. The 1963 team scored 452 points in an 11-game schedule for an average of 41 points per game, the best offensive record in school history. CLASS AA-From 1970 through 1976 Lakeside won 56, lost 21, tied 1 for a 77lXJ. During that time they won 4 region titles including being state Semi-Finalist in 1974 and State Runner-up in 1975. In all the 28 years combined Lakeside has won 201, lost 79, tied 13 for a 7O'M,. In the past few years the AFS Club has grown to be one of the top organizations with a member- ship of 170 students. The main purpose of our program has been to bring stu- dents from other countries to our school and to send our students abroad. The student body and administration have been Very enthusiastic about our program and have aided the club during the fund-raising activities. Our major activity, the annual Harvest Carnival, was very successful this year. The funds earned from the carnival will be used to bring students to otu' school and to send our students abroad. Since the AFS program has been at Lakeside, we have received four students: Phil Donnelly from Australia, Babette Crohas from France, Luis Lopez from K Guatemala and Angel Cabeza from Chile. We have sent three students abroad: Paula Thompson to Greece, David Wenner to England, and Terri Walker to Columbia. We did not receive a suident this year, but the Club is looking forward to having a student next year. Opp. Top Left-Row 1-A. Rosenzweig, V.P., G. Garner, Sec. T. Koonce, Pres., L. Brouns, K. Ram Staff The annual staff didn't have many meetings this year, but many people worked behind the scenes every day. Our highlight was the selection of a new publishing company- -American Yearbook- - with a new representative, Lonnie Stewart. We sold ads in September with the winning group fKauffman, Peters, Frost, Williams and Smithj. We sponsored a photo contest with Marsha Grissom the winner. We participated in the AFS Carnival with the jailhouse. Our subscription 50's film was a big success , and we ended the year with our yearly annual staff assembly. Being on a yearbook staff requires hard work and enthusiasm. This year's staff has displayed both of these in trying to create a book that will make you proud! Clark led the group to attain Honor Unit with Distinction, putting them in the top five percent in the nation. They scored 97.72 out of 100 in their annual inspection by the army. Their honors and achievements are too numerous to name, but they competed in such events as: Orienteering Workshop , OBU competition, drill and rifle team meet at Arkansas Tech, UCA Rifle Match, Irving, Texas, meet, Baton Rouge, Louisiana meet, Pentathalon at OBU, Ft. Chaffee meet at Fort Smith, Shreveport, Louisiana, meet, and two meets at Lakeside. The ROTC had winners in all areas of competition. In individual firing Donny Moore, Randy Wages, and Tommy Cooper competed in a target match with 60,000 nation- wide competitors. These cadets won the right to compete in an all-expense paid trip to a National Pellet Rifle Match in Rogers, Arkansas. This year makes the fourth year in which the Lakeside Rifle Team has taken first place team and high shooter in EVERY ONE of their meets. Col. Williams and Sgt. Clark are quick to give credit to the students. Sgt. Clark said, This has been a very good year for the ROTC Department, and it was all made possible by the students-- their willingness to sacrifice their time and to put forth that extra effort to accomplish the goals for which we set out to accomplish. However, two dignitaries from the army were sent to Lakeside to give special recognition to Col. Williams and Sgt. Clark! J.R. O. T. C. Lakeside began a kindergarten program for 5-year olds. This program was made possible by state legislation which pays teachers but doesn't provide for transportation. There were 100 students enrolled with 4 certified teachers and classes ran from 8:30 to 2:30. Kindergarten was held in the old middle school which was the first building ever built at Lakeside. A girls' gymnastics program was initiated in both middle and high school. Two tennis courts were built for physical edu- cation classes and as a community facility. Streets around the school were improved by hard surfacing. Mr. E,T, shuffieid, Supt. 4 SCHOOL BOARD: Jim Geurin, Raymond Lawson, Vice President, Gene Parker, E. T. Shuffield, Superintendent, Don Burrough, President, Bob Messersmith, Secretary. ' This year Lakeside students received a handbook containing information about the rules and regulations, conveniences and services, academic regulations, student activities, clubs and the courses offered. Each student received a copy of the handbook this year, but only new students and freshmen will re- ceive a copy next year, A new attendance policy allowed only 13 absences in each class per semes- ter before students were dropped from the class X, unless there were extenuating circumstances. f 'TQ Teachers were kept busy reporting 5, 10, and 13 absences. yn Donnie Watts Ray Lumpkin, Principal Assistant Principal anipulators The manipulators were able to work be- hind the scenes and keep things going on the home front, too. The front office was run ef- ficiently by jane Butler, attendance officer, and Betty Hyde, secretary. They were helped by student assistants each period who picked up absentee slips, recorded absences, answered phones, delivered messages and ran errands. Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Davis ran the back oi'- fice and helped keep the financial records straight which is a big job. Mrs. Shuffield worked as a teacher aide and was shared with middle school. Mrs. Arman knows every face that comes through the lunchroom lines. She is cashier for both high school and middle school cafeterias. Mrs. Brooks, the school nurse, divides her time among the three schools and is always ready with a joke, her own style of therapy. Mrs. Parker is supervisor of the lunch- room personnel, plans menus, buys foods and supplies, and keeps the lunchroom going. Mrs. McGill acted as library assistant and secretary. Av?
