Although this year's junior varsity football team did not have a successful season statistically, it was a good season because the players gained valuable experience. With a record of 2-6 the little Lancers were led offen- sively by running back Sean Phelan. Running back Jim Lakey was also a stand-out, leading the team in yards gained. Captains Peter Brooks and Matt Cluff were the defen- sive standouts, with Peter Brooks leading the team in tackles, as well as making the most outstanding tackle of the season. The J.V.'s Beat Coloma and Dowagiac, but Coaches Koch and Adler felt a highlight of the season occurred when Jim Lakey broke loose for a 55 yard touchdown run against Benton Harbor. Coaches Koch and Adler felt, “The boys maintained good attitudes, and attempted to improve in every phase of the game.'’ The two coaches thought the outstanding leadership of Tim Hopke helped tremendously and voted Jeff Gustafson and Dave Ed- monds the most improved players. The best attitude award went to Dave Abbey. The Cheerleaders had a terrific start in the sum- mer. They attended two four day camps. The first was an ICF competition at Notre Dame where they won various ribbons, first place, a congeniali- ty award and a spirit frisbee. The second was a DCA competition at Valparaiso where they re- ceived a second place and a squad unity award. During the one day competition at Western Michigan University the girls won first place and at the ICF competition in Watcrvliet the girls won third place. The girls faced a big disappointment when they were disqualified at Regionals. The reason they were disqualified was because they went over the time limit, if they would have stayed within the time limit they would have gone to state competition. Throughout the year Varsity Cheerleaders cheered for all the football and basketball games, held team dinners, sold ribbons and buttons, and made signs. They were kept busy with these and other activities along with their many practices. Overall their year was spent supporting our athletes and raising a fantastic Lakeshore School Spirit. 1. The Club also ushered at the Miss Stevensville Contest, escorted the area queens for the key to the city tour, and also for the Blossomtime Contest. Along with the help of the Keyettes, they held Chris Krieger - Secretary, John Reilly - Vice president. Jeff Roden - President, Brian Wolff many fund-raisers, such as, record sales for Treasurer Easter Seals, and holding a Dancc-a-thon for the National Burn Institute. The Keyettes have become one of the strongest and most active clubs in our school due to the support and time given to them by their advisor, Mrs. Cheek and President, Kelley Brugman. The Keyettes are a group of girls sponsored by Kiwanis who contribute their services to the community. They have par- ticipated in many activities this year. Last summer they helped sell hot dogs, chips, and pop at the Art Fair along with the Key Club. They worked at the record sale held at the high school with proceeds going to Easter Seals. The Keyettes raised money for the National Burn Institute by placing canisters in local stores and having a dance-a-thon. Other activities included helping Kiwanis with a pancake sup- per, the annual Christmas Dance, Christmas caroling at Jordans Nursing Home, Winter Olympics at Royal Valley, and window washing in St. Joe and Stevensville. In October they held their annual Haunted House at the Orchards Mall. The Haunted Hotel was designed and constructed by the members. This was a great opportunity for members to design their own props, costumes, and make up. While working on the Hotel, D.C. members managed to put together a skit for the variety Advisor Mrs. Wroblcwski show. On May 8, they took a trip to Chicago’s Candlelight Dinner Theatre to sec Evita. Every spring, the Drama Club members who have earned enough, points through participation in theatre, are inducted into the honor Thespians. This years 5 in- ductees were: Jenny VanDermccr, Juanita Lopez, Marc Ridgeway, Laurie Jewell, and Dana Sicwcrt. On May 11, they performed to entertain those attending which was part of the inductions. Kneeling: Jenny Vandcrmecr and Holly Hetfield. Standing: Aaron Niemi, Doug Morse, Denise Schmidt, and Dawn Michaels. This years Spanish Club consisted of nine members. At their first meeting officers were elected as follows: Jane Neitzke, President; Dennis Hahn, Vice President; Julie Klassen, secretary; and Tonya Steinberger, treasurer. The Spanish Club started off the year by selling M M’s and later sold jewelry. These items were sold to raise money for the club. In December they had a Christmas potluck for the members in which they all made a Spanish dish to share with everyone else. The club was unable to make their annual trip to Chicago because “time seemed to run out.” Fortunately the Spanish Club had a really fun year! 1. In Chicago they visited the German section of town where went to various stores and restaurants where the employees speak German. This gave the German Club members a chance to practice their German. Some other activities included selling advent calen- dars, a Christmas party, caroling, slides on Germany, and going to a German play at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. Charlotta Lassvik has spent the last year with Caroline Piehl and her family in Baroda. She has had a great time here this year and would do it again, but she also says that more Americans should come to Sweden. She has participated in Band, Cross Country, Track, Variety Show, and Keyettcs, all activities that arc not available in Swedish schools. Her favorite classes were math analysis and psychology, both of which will help her when she returns home to finish high school. Lotta plans to go on to University to study engineering. Major differences that she sees between Swedish and American schools involve rules; more here and less there. Swedish students arc expected to get to school on their own, take care of their own attendance, write almost all essay tests, and then have two coffee breaks each day, plus lunch. She, like all Swedes, is an ice cream addict, and really enjoys the kind and variety of flavors we have here. Too much junk food and fried food are her criticisms of US cooking and eating habits. She loves Lake Michigan and the beach, but says that she is fascinated with San Diego, where she was able to go sightseeing and jogging for a week. Lotta also visited Washington, D.C. and Florida. She would like to hear from her many friends here. Her address is: Charlotta Lassvik Kvinnebyv. 220 582 60 Linkoping Sweden Camilla Brand is a flirt! That was the unanimous vote of the entire LHS senior class! However, she says that we don’t really understand her. She enjoyed Art classes. Psychology and Public Address, while admitting to “technical difficulties’’ with Algebra. Cross Country, Variety Show, Brigadoon and Keyettes were her extracurricular ac- tivities. She ate ice cream, peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies, too many Big Macs, and worried about gaining weight here in America. Camilla stayed with Heidi Greendonner this year and spent a lot of time cooking, lay- ing in the sun and visiting St. Joseph. She enjoyed Stevensville, but likes living in the “Big City” better. She managed to find time to visit California and Niagara Falls, and would like to come back to go to college in Southern California. She felt that classes here were easier than in Sweden, with too many short answer tests, and too many extra credit projects to raise grades. She will have two more years of school when she returns home, and then plans to take a year or two off, as most Swedes do before going on to University. Her address is: Camilla Brand Strandskogsv. 5 30240 Halmstad Sweden Fernando Gomez, from Columbia, arrived at LHS in March of this year. He was at school in Saginaw and in Coloma before coming to LHS. He considers the USA an incredible place, and enjoyed visiting Florida with other Youth For Understanding students. His goals here are to play soccer and to learn English. While in Stevensville he has lived with Brian and Ginger Shindeldecker, and will be with them un- til early July. Jcppe Crenzien says that it has really been a pleasure and a great experience to be here at LHS. He transferred from St. Joe and really saw a difference. Jeppe joined the wrestling team and trained hard, but it was very enjoyable. One thing he noticed was the fantastic school spirit. In Denmark they only have academic schools without ex- tracurricular activities. His dream is to do well in biking and to come back to the USA to race. Sabine Fach came from Schwuerbitz, West Germany, a village near the East German border. Sabine lived with juniors Jill and Jerry Knowles. German Club and Keyettes were her extracurricular ac- tivities. Sabine said that there are numerous differences between American and West German schools. German students have 15 classes per week and one group of students has every class together, instead of different students in each class. Sabine also says that Americans are friendlier and talk more to foreigners. Young people in Germany view typical Americans as wearing jeans, t- shirts, a cowboy hat, drinking a coca-cola, and eating a ham- burger. She would like to say thanks to everyone for everything they’ve done to make her visit a success. E X c H A N G E 107 Student Council The 1984-1985 Student Council consisted of forty members who represented Lakeshore’s stu- dent body. The council was hard at work during the first week of school, having to plan Homecom- ing festivities which included both the float and hall decorating competition. They also planned the outdoor all-school assembly and homecoming dance, in which a king and queen were chosen. The next event that Student Council par- ticipated in was the twenty-seventh Annual Varie- ty show. The money from the show was used for girls softball uniforms, headset system, cassette deck and a variety of audio equipment. Student council runs a snack bar all year long which pays for any extra activities or assemblies that the stu- dent council puts on. During the fall student council was involved with the Student Forum Seminar, which included sessions in many topics, such as: school-spirit, class participation and leadership improvement for student council. Bringing these students together for this seminar stimulated insight and new ideas for next year's council. Tom Norbey Treasury, Steve Levi President.
