Through two separate elections the mil- lage failed to pass. This resulted in the discontinua- tion of busing and all extracurricular activities at the school. However, through the hard hard work and determination of the Lakeshore Foundation, all but busing was restored. The foundation raised money by having a spagehitti dinner. Las Vegas night, rummage sale, citrus fruit sale, selling cook- books. and Christmas ornaments. Thanks to the help of all participants. The seasons passed with good showings by our athletic teams, proving once again Lakeshore's will to win. Athletics were not the only bright spot in the 83-84 school. This year saw a rise in the number of students participants in last years variety show and the musical production GODSPELL proved very successful. The gap left by the Lindhals was well filled by Mrs. Carol Wroblewski. who directed the Forensics production of The Diviners” which at- tended the District Competition at St. Johns. Michi- gan. Even with all the activities. Lakeshore continued in it's strive for excellance in education. Students qualified for the National Merit Scholarships which was one of the highest number of qualifying stu- dents in the area. Though this year began under a dark cloud and student's devotion to Lakeshore fell, the Lakeshore Foundation brought with it a ray of sunshine into the 1983-84 school year. 1. If you are ever in Finland feel free to stop by.” stated Auli. Auli Makela of Finland joined our LHS family this year as a foreign exchange student. Participating in basketball and Drama Club, Auli kept busy. School was different to Auli in that students were more active, in- teresting, and people were always smiling. After Graduation from LHS. Auli will re- turn to Finland for yet another two years of high school. One word to describe LHS Auli said is friendly.” JUNKO AZUMA Thank you very much for being kind to me, as I was able to spend a fun time at school. I'll never forget this year.” Junko Azuma of Osaka. Japan was another terrific addition to our school. Junko kept active in Keyettes. Drama Club, and as a member of our Volleyball team. Junko compared LHS to her school in Japan, and said that academics are stressed much more in Japan and less on the extra- curricular activities. Graduation for Junko was an important step for her because, a college English major is in her plans for the future. These concerned people thought that the students at LHS shouldn’t have to suffer from the defeated millage. They felt that the students deserved extra curricular activities and were determined to do something about it. The Foundation expressed their gratitude to all of the people in the community for their contributions and moral support. They wouldn’t have been a success without them. Foundation funds didn’t go only to the athletic department, but also toward restoring various clubs. The fund raisers of the foundation consisted of: Las Vegas night, spaghetti dinner, rummage sales, art sales, ticket and concession money from games, and many clubs also raised money to donate to the foundation. The board of directors of the Foundation were: Dave Williams — co-founder, Ron Frohock — treasur- er, Mike Maus — secretary, Denise Foust, Darrell Williams and Mat Gustafson. The members of the Foundation were all those in the Lake- shore community who worked to help it achieve success — success being a complete extracurricular program at LHS. Heidi Greendonner and Deanna At the start of the school year High School Students from Lakeshore, St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, Michigan Lutheran and Lake Michigan Catholic High Schools are given the opportunity to run their own miniature business through Junior Achievement. Approximately twenty five students each, sell stock to capita- v -A f lize, elect officers, choose a product, buy raw materials and go into production. Under the guidance of adult business volunteers called Advisors, members use their two-hour weekly company meetings to manufacture their products, hold Board of Directors meetings, map out marketing plans and keep their company books. At the end of the school year, they liquidate their company, publish an Annual Report and, if their company is profitable, return to stock- holders their original investment plus a dividend. In their JA companies, members discover what they enjoy most about being in business; keeping books; selling, manufacturing, developing new products or personnel work. This knowledge helps them in their choice of a future business career. Those who don't decide on a career in business still profit from the decision making, leadership training, and the sense of responsibility developed in JA. In addition, practical business experience and knowledge of applied economics benefit JA members throughout their lives, wherever their career takes them. This year a number of Lakeshore High School students held offices and were recognized for their accomplishments: Tim Tungett was awarded a $500.00 Junior Acheivement Scholarship, Brian Bythrow was selected as the Best Salesperson, as the Production Vice President of the year and the Outstanding Male Achiever of the Year, Tracy McGee was the second runner-up in the Best Salesperson Contest, and Amy Gerlach won a $50.00 Savings Bond when she was chosen the Financial Vice President of the Year.
