Driftwood 1983 Lakeshore High School Stevensville, Michigan 49127 lib age Set p0r School Year , The June 14, 1982 millage vote passed the needed nineteen mills to keep the school functioning. However, the additional two mills that support school activities were defeated. The defeat reflected the community facing hard times which were brought on by continual inflation and unemployment. The outcome of this vote then set the stage for the beginning 1928-83 school year. Early in the year Mr. Reilly predicted the following school year as “unsure.” Mr. Reilly did, however, comment that the academic level of study would continue to run well. The effects of the hard times began in the previous school year when teachers were pink slipped in the spring. Cuts included the elimination of busing in a mile and a half radius of school, various freshman and junior sports. Pom Pons, field trips, and the musical and school plays. Although complaints were heard through the course of the year, the abilities and interest of faculty, students, and parents working together secured financial support elsewhere for activities cut. 1. The 1982-83 varsity cheerleading squad had a successful year in many ways by capturing titles, honors, and awards. In August the Lancer squad competed in the Berrien County Youth Fair, taking second place. During the school year the girls participated in various competitions. At Hope College they took first place, topping twenty-two other squads. At Western Michigan University, a clinic competition, the Lancer squad again captured first place from a field of twelve other teams. The girls also participated in the National Qualifying Cheerleading Competition held at Miami University, Ohio. The girls, through tough competition, captured a superior ribbon. The cheerleaders then moved on to the District Regionals, taking first place to again qualify for the State competition. The squad gained an eleventh place standing in the state contest. Over the summer the cheerleaders held several fund raisers including a Little Girls Clinic and two car washes. About twenty five girls participated in the clinic. Ribbons, buttons, and awards were given. The squad kept busy year round by cheering at both varsity football and basketball games. They kept the Lancer spirit going by making posters and shields for the basketball season, and selling buttons and ribbons during the sports season. This year the squad alternated captains each week giving each girl experience. VcLv oiXij G juAjUo(itn During the summer the varsity cheerleaders attended the International Cheerleading Foundation camp. During their stay they won the Grand Champions title and Most Congenial Squad award. Most Congenial Squad award is an honor in itself for it is given to a squad by totaling all the votes from each participating squad. Lori Arick and Julie Yore were recognized and awarded with spirit frisbees. Karen Clem and Joy Hoffman were honored with individual cheerleading awards also. 1. Karol Clem warms up. 2. The squad’s efforts of hard work paid off when the girls won many awards including outstanding cheerleading skills, outstanding movements and stunts, and best pom pon routine. The girls also earned an award for displaying the best squad unity from their abilities to get along well with one another. J.V. Perform Well Together Michelle White, Leah Kretchman, Debbie Broadficld. Heidi Albrecht, Tina Schmitt, Tina Bcrghoff, and Kris Mitchell. The junior varsity cheerleaders experienced an outstanding year. Their accomplishments included many awards from camp. They then placed well in competitions including second at Hope College and third at Western Michigan University. Other than cheering and performing well through the year, the girls had several activities. Such activities involved a garage sale held in the summer and a dinner for the J.V. football team after their season. To the J.V. basketball team the girls were known as the Secret Rah-Rahs. Each girl was assigned to a couple of the basketball players. The goal of the cheerleaders was to encourage the spirits of the team to lead them to victories. Decorating lockers, giving cakes and cookies, and sending notes of encouragements were some of the Secret Rah-Rahs’ activities to cheer the members on. t ''C Frosh Make Steady Progress Dawn Johnson, Debbie Haak, Melissa Bowman, Lynn Wilson. Because of the cut the 1982-83 squad chosen last May did not meet to practice during the summer. As the school year neared the girls’ parents agreed to loan the necessary funds to support the squad. A proposal was written stating the seven girls would try to repay their parents. With a late start and new advisor, Lisa Miller, the girls made steady progress as a well working squad. Their main goal of showing school spirit was exhibited during the freshman boy’s basketball season. The most exciting game cheered for was at River Valley when the team went into double overtime, winning by two points. Besides cheering, the girls sold programs, gave the boys a pizza party, held a Little Girls Clinic, and had a Christmas decoration raffle. Overall the girls felt their trials and efforts were well worthwhile. Considering the late start the girls did a real nice job. For the most part they showed their school spirit. I enjoyed the year and I think and hope each of them did too. Lisa Miller. However, last June Lakeshore voters defeated the millage which eliminat- ed various activities including Pom Pons. This did not stop the Lancer- ettes! Instead, the girls and their par- ents formed an organization known a$ H.O.P.P.S. (Help Our Pom Pons Survive!). With this support, money was raised through donations, serv- ing drinks at Pizza Hut, and organiz- ing an auction. The profits earned exceeded the needed amount which enabled the squad to purchase cardi- gan sweaters with name emblems. By starting so late in the year, the squad had lost three months of hard work and camp experience which had to be combined into one month of practice. Despite their hurried schedule, the Lancerettes performed previous routines at pep assemblies and football games, including the Homecomign game. The squad also added spirit to Homecoming week by selling the annual Homecoming mums and donating the remaining mums to Whitcomb Tower. Basketball season proved to be just as successful, with highlights such as hosting a guest performance by the Coloma Comettes, and enter- taining fans with the annual little girls’ routine. The 1982-83 squad was under the leadership of Tina Varney — advisor, Debbie Geary — captain, Julie Korican — secretary, Suzan Strejc — treasurer, Shelley Graziano — album-maker, and Cheri Florian — recordkeeper. The record, however, does not show that the team faced one of the toughest schedules in the school’s history. One of the high- lights of the season was a 42 point outburst against the River Valley Mustangs. The 42 points was the most scored by a Lancer team in the last 33 games. On offense, Rob Wales led the team with 648 yards on 169 carries, and also in scoring with 30 points. Next year’s squad will have the makings for a good passing team, with the help of junior quarterback Roger Swierbut. Swierbut, who played in only three games, led the team in three passing categories. His main target was split end, Greg O’Dell, who caught 17 passes for 240 yards and three touch- downs. Named on the first All-Conference Offensive team were Mike Smith at cen- ter, Dean Clem at tackle, and for the sec- ond year, Jeff Wagonmaker at running back. As in the past years the Lancer defense was led by it’s linebackers, and this year was no exception. Kevin Wilson led the team with 92 tackles and close behind was Mike Smith with 81 tackles. Magnus Ojert came down with two interceptions for a team high. Mark Martin blocked one kick while Mark Waldmann and Steve Berndt tied for the most sacks with six apiece. Named to the first All-Conference Defen- sive team were Tod Kretchman at middle guard, and Steve Berndt at linebacker. At the awards banquet, Kevin Wilson was chosen Defensive Player of the Year, Steve Berndt was chosen Offensive Player of the Year, Roger Swierbut was voted Most Improved Player of the Year, Greg O’Dell was given the Coaches Award, and Mike Smith was chosen Most Valuable Player. For the fourth consecutive year, the Ladie Lancers achieved an undefeated Lakeland Conference record with 32 straight confer- ence victories. During their outstanding season, fifteen team and individual records were broken. Mary Fowler, senior co-cap- tain, set the record for the most points scored by an individual in one game, which was 35 points against Portage Northern. Jim’s Dandies also broke the record for the most points scored by a team in one game by tallying 89 points against Coloma in District play. The team holds the high- est scoring average in Lancer history with 57 points per game. Season records consisted of Mary Fowler swishing 303 points while Karla Huebner scored 283. The other co-cap- tain, senior Renee Surch, had a total of 82 assists while returning junior, Carol Men- singer, obtained 18 blocked shots. Wendy Garlanger, also a junior, started at guard opposite of Renee Surch. The starting five were backed up by a strong bench consist- ing of seniors Kirsten Carr, Judy Harris, Kim Klus, and Tobey Taylor, junior Tina Franklin, and six-foot freshman Traci McGrath. The bench really displayed their strength and depth when the chips were down, especially when two starters were on the injured list. The season officially ended, after a heart-breaking loss to Saint Joseph in the District Finals and with the holding of the traditional banquet, which consisted of senior speeches and award presentations. Most Valuable Player was awarded to Mary Fowler; Best Defensive Player and Free Throw Shooter honors were obtained by Karla Huebner, and Most Improved Player was awarded to Kirsten Carr. As Jim Sanford’s sixth year of coaching he explained the team’s position. “We were inexperienced with only one starter com- ing back and we were a lot smaller than teams in the past.” The squad, however, did finish well placing second in the Lake- land Conference with a three win and three loss standing. Consistent starters this year were Jim Small, Mike Sarola, Dean Clem, Norm Payne, and Andy Williams. Clem and Wil- liams were lead scorers for the team aver- aging 10.1 and 10.0 respectively per game. Small and Sarola were excellent perimeter shooters while Mark Waldmann per- formed outstandingly defensively. Payne was the Lancer playmaker and assist lead- er. Team captains. The 1982-83 Freshman Basketball sea- son started out a little rough, but as the season progressed they improved ending with a 6-12 record. The records show a twelve game loss. Eight of these games, however, were lost by six points or less. The Lancers won by a considerable margin including wins over LMC by 25 points, Buchanan by 20 points, and LMC again by 24 points. “We came on very fast at the end of the year. It took us awhile to get there but I believe this group is capable of being winners after a couple of years experience.” Steve Adler These wins reflected three well played games by the team. Another memorable game included playing River Valley. The game extended into double overtime with the Little Lancers coming out with a 45-43 win. The team’s greatest asset was the ability for all the members to get along and work well together. All the members played in each game. This year’s captains were Dave Caple and Dave McGrath. Tri-captains Mary Fowler, Karla Huebner, and Renee Surch lead the girls to a 47-7 record. The year’s most valuable player was Karla Huebner. Lisa Cockrell was the most important player. However, awards were given to individuals who displayed special skills; Most Effective Setters — Mindy Powell and Sandy Petzke, Most Effective Hitters — Lois Ramthun and Jill Knowles, Most Effective Blockers — Connie Mensinger and Dana Siewert, Most Effective Servers — Leslie Krouse, Stephanie Hersh (captain), and Anita Wendzel. However, by the end of the season, the Lancers, led by co-captains Dave McCon- omy and Norm Payne, came back and upset league leader Buchanan and South Bend Adams. South Bend Adams was cur- rently ranked in the top ten in Indiana at that time. BAND CONCERT 120 This year the Lancer Marching Band’s pride showed in every performance given. Their year started off with a trip to Camp Friendenswald. With a week of intense marching, the band prepared for their half-time shows and perfected their festival show. At festival, the band put on an amazing performance playing “Aztec Fire,” “Elgato,” and ending with selections from “Evita”. Upon receiving their Division 1 rating, the crowd awarded them with a standing ovation as they marched off the Field. Drum majors Chris Hanson and Paul Czech led the band through every performance. Lynn Van Pelt and Jane Wilkinson put snap into this year’s flag corps; Laura Barnett and Cyndi Schmidt led the rifle Corps through their First season. Scott Bodjack, Steve Collins, Herman Miller, and Renee Surch’s work paid off as they were awarded the outstanding squad of the year. When marching season ends, each member tries out to be placed in either concert or symphonic band. Good Community Service Continues With Key Club CLUB This year's Key Club was a very active club, donating their services to help Kiwanis and the community in many ways. They started by helping Kiwanis sell hot dogs and pop at the Art Fair last summer. They washed windows at the Whitcomb Towers. A few other activities included ringing bells for the Salvation Army, es- corting the area Queens, and helping at the Winter and Summer Olympics for the handicapped. One of the highlights was the annual Key Club Slave Sale. On April 15-17, nine Key Clubbers attended the State Convention in Grand Rapids. While there, Scott Ruble was elected as the next Lieutenant Governor of their district. Among the many learned techniques are critiquing, justifying, page lay-out and ad design. Drifter issues are published every two weeks. The eight pages of the newspaper are broken down into the cover page, editorial page, news page, two feature pages, two sports pages and the picture page. In December the Christmas paper comes out with the many Christmas wishes the students send to each other. The Senior paper comes out in May with the seniors’ wills, future plans, and baby pictures. 5771 Cleveland. Stevensville. Reporters Staff Faces Busy Year Of Production In the fall, the large yearbook staff of twenty-eight members faced a busy year of production of the 1982-83 Driftwood. At first, the yearbook students became famil- iar with yearbook terms such as double- page spread, signature, pica, cropper, and copyfit. The group was then assigned a double-page spread in order to display proper usage of yearbook terms and tech- niques. The staff was also acquainted with the finance of yearbooks; afterwards they then sold yearbooks and ads. These sales largely compose the financial support of yearbook production. In the end, both yearbook and ad sale goals were exceeded. This achievement required one other fund raiser — a dance held in January — as being necessary to meet financial cost. Editors were selected early in the fall covering the areas of sports, people, activi- ties, copy, photography, and art; a business manager was also selected. The objective of having editors was to concentrate more effort in each area, in hopes of producing a better all-around book. As a group, the editors, business manager, and advisor, Jack Greendonner, made important deci- sions about typeface, the cover and senior activities. In addition, this year, emphasis was placed on unifying each section in some way, either by artwork, three-column layout, or copy such as the special story used in the sports section. 00K First: Joctta Imlcr, Tim Doolan, Connie Petzke, Deanna Sankey, June Eastman. Below: Just a quick nap. Julie? The Lakeshore Student Council is well known among it’s students as an organiza- tion that speaks and acts upon issues that influence the student body yearly. They not only serve by collecting new ideas and determining what is best for the school, but also try to improve our procedures by visiting other schools and their councils. This year though, Lakeshore gained na- tional attention when they turned down the invitation to march in the David Stockman Parade due to his absence from attending his former high school. However, such wide coverage did not reduce the amount of work the council was expected to complete, so they busily en- gaged upon filling the annual duties of Homecoming festivities, such as King and Queen elections, Homecoming Dance, and float competition. Other annual tasks were Academic Letter Awards, the sponsoring of the Variety Show, Snack bar sales, a blood drive, and gifts to the school. A new undergoing the council performed was the establishment of a clean-up committee which added new trash receptacles and at- tempted to bring school pride with cleanli- ness. They also completed a series of show- cases designed to house the many trophies and awards the school has gathered throughout the years. Above: Our Student Council President. Pat McGrath. This year’s stage crew was supervised by Mr. Lindahl and headed by two senior members, Mark Verduin and Mike Wer- muth. These two and the rest of the crew have worked on the variety show, band and choir concerts, forensics elementary school programs and various community shows such as the Miss Stevensville queen contest and the Miss Blossomtime Queen contest. 140 Ethan Bring up the light.
