Below: the marching band as it appeared in 1958. Being in the band is more than knowing your right foot from your left. It’s an important commitment. It’s hard work and often frustrat- ing. It’s “one more time” too many times. It requires concentration, determination and talent. It involves both an individual and a unified spirit of pride. It’s setting goals and then reaching them. The 1981-82 Lancer Marching band offered all this and more. Realizing the potential of this year’s group, directors Arnold Lesser and Thomas Mitchell suggested they compete at marching band festi- val as A A, two levels above the requirement. However, the decision was left to the band who, in unanimously accepting the challenge, attempt- ed what no other Lakeshore band had. The forceful “Captain from Castille” opened the festival show and provided the debut for this year’s newest addition, the rifle corp. “Temptation”, a suspenseful Latin American tune, was next in the lineup. The third song, “Popeye”, featured the mallets and percussion as well as the flags. The finale, “Over the Rainbow”, with its triple fortes, helium balloons, and 100 foot cloth rainbow, brought audiences to their feet. It seems the judges were equally impressed as the band easily earned the points necessary for a first division rating. In addition to marching festival, the band performed pregames and half-times at 6 football games. Their first appearance was at Dickenson Stadium at St. Joe, where the band proudly took the field sporting new apparel. Countless fund raising projects over the past 13 years enabled the band to purchase those flashy caped uniforms. Chris Hanson and Chris Pinderski were this year’s field commanders. The flag corp was led by captain Robin Totzke and co-captain Lynn Van Pelt. Judged as outstanding by the band directors was the cymbal squad comprised of leader Dave Roden, Ted Chen, Rayetta Hicks, and Vicki Owens. BAND BAND BAND BAND Early in November, a strange phenomenon occurs. Flags suddenly become flutes and bells change over- night to clarinets and oboes. By osmosis, or perhaps try-outs, the band miraculously divides into two smaller bands. It is truly a musical metamorphosis — concert season has begun. Recognizing the difficulty in producing good con- cert band sounds with over 150 band members, Mr. Lesser spilt the marching band into concert and sym- phonic sections. The bands have two weeks to prepare a winter concert; a light-hearted, combined band perfor- mance. This year, in addition to the traditional Christmas carols and falling snow, the musicians fine-tuned their theatrical talents to present “Law- rence Milk Plays Guy Lombago.” After Christmas break, the bands work intensely toward Band and Orchestra Festival, hoping to earn first dividions from four selected judges. Just as the band is judged as a whole, many students choose to come before an adjudicator and be rated individually at District Solo and Ensemble. This year, as always, many Lakeshore musicians returned with medals. Before returning to the pavement for parade marching, the bands present a spring concert. Awards honoring top senior band students, and scholarships for Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp are given. The concert bands’ last appearance is June 2 — when the remaining musicians combine to honor the graduates with “Pomp and Circumstance.” BAND BAND BAND BAND Eager to march! Practice, Practice, Practice. The mighty flute line: MARCHING BAND 'I want to go home already. For the sixteenth consecutive year, La- keshore’s mighty lancer marching band began their active year at camp Friedens- wald in Cassopolis, MI. Veteran director Arnold Lesser reflected on his first band camp experience and commented, “I took about sixty kids back then and we worked really hard. Of course we had a lot of fun. It rained every day — excpet for Thursday when we had a water balloon fight and got wet anyway.” Assistant director Thomas Mitchell, stated, “Marching band camp is an ex- tremely beneficial experience. It gets the kids physically and mentally prepared to face the season before them and unites them into a solid unit.” A senior band student added, “Through the rehearsals, meals, recreation, campfire, and other ac- tivities, you learn a lot about your friends and even more about yourself. Best of all, you bring home some really terrific memo- ries.” BAND CAMP R mthun, Edwards end “Temptation” IN THE BEGINNING Hail, Hail The gang's all here! To Prince Dauntless’ mother, Queen Aggravain, no princess is good enough for her son, so she devises the toughest test she can think of . to prove that Princess Win- nifred is not sensi- tive enough for Dauntless. Queen Aggravain throws a Ball and makes sure Winnifred is totally exhausted so she will fail the test. The Queen piled many mattresses on Win- nifred’s bed and put a pea under the bot- tom mattress. If Winnifred is sensi- tive enough to feel the pea, she passes the test, if not — she fails, and can not marry Prince Daunt- less. After a restless, sleepless night, the whole kingdom awaits the news. Princess Winnifred arises and announces much to the Queen’s surprise that Prin- cess Winnifred did not sleep a wink! ALL SCHOOL PLAYhmmmiALL SCHOOL PLAYhhmhmmALL SCHOOL PLAY- —-ALL SCHOOL PLAY' RAVING REVIEWS The actors and actresses of Lakeshore High School once again proved their talent in this years All School Play, A Thurber Carnival, direct- ed by Mr. and Mrs. Lindahl. Many hours and a tremen- dous amount of effort and hard work on the part of both the cast and directors went into this years play. A Thurber Carnival is a col- lection of short vinettes that portray Thurbers sarcasm and humor. Although not all of Thurbers humor could be fully appreciated or recog- nized, many lines evoked broad smiles and laughter. The play began and ended with a word dance, consist- ing of ‘one-liners’ packed with the dry humor so char- acteristic of the famous play- wright. The play was split into two acts with nine vin- ettes in the first act and five in the second. A Thurber Carnival was a truly unique play, different from the usu- al school plays in various ways. Scenery and props, which were black and white to represent Thurbers car- tooning, were kept at a mini- mum, most being left up to the imagination of the audi- ence. The costumes, black skirts and tuxes, also por- trayed Thurbers unique style. The feelings of the cast about the play are sumed up in a line from File and For- get which states, “I love it!” ALL SCHOOL PLAYi ALL SCHOOL PLAYi ALL SCHOOL PLAY 'ALL SCHOOL PLAY Members of the cast take a break after a hard practice. Many weeks of intense practice went into this years one-act play, the drama, Peer Gynt, which was first performed for a general audience, then for district competition in Jackson. Only one point prevented them from tying for first, yet they were still eligible for the regional competition in Lansing. Once again the cast lost first place by only one point, this time at regional competition. At Central University, the site for state competition, forensics took fifth place. At districts, the acting ensemble and stage crew earned awards of superior. Superior awards were also given to the lighting, costume, and make-up crews at regionals. Excellent marks were awarded to special effects, set and costume design at state competition. A great deal of ef- fort and time was demanded from each of the 28 members, who often had to spend time each day to carry out their council responsibilities. The majority of the decisions, however, were made at the 7:00 a.m. meetings each Tuesday morning. The first task for the council was to organize Homecoming ’81. The main responsibility of Lakeshore’s stu- dent government is to assure smooth running of club activities, which is done by approving or disapproving activity request forms (ARF’s). In addition, the council organized 2 academic letter award ceremonies to honor those stu- dents who had acquired a 3.5 grade point average or better for two consecu- tive semesters. Several standing com- mittees kept council members busy all year such as the Publicity Committee, Gifts to the School Committee, and the Student Exchange Program. Although all these committees were created for the benefit of Lakeshore’s student body, the most popular servce is the snack bar which opened daily during lunch and at all home basketball games. 95 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY —NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY' NHS — TOMORROW’S LEADERS Front: Peggy Sturtz, Alice Rosa, Elaine Katsulos, Kelly Sinkiewicz, Tami Ball, Julie Harris, Nancy Priebe, Michelle Harder, Gayla Ruff. The year-long tournament is divided into two single elimination semesters and semester champions clash to determine the overall winner. In first semester action, the Lancers were defeated in the first round by Michigan Lutheran who went on to take the title. However, Lakeshore advanced to semi-final competition before being ousted by Ben- ton Harbor in the second semester. “We fought to the end and the end came sooner than we wanted”, said team captain Scott Lausman. The 1981 Varsity Football season proved to be one of ups and downs. Senior experience combined with junior enthusiasm made for a rewarding campaign. Although all of the team goals were not attained; much was accom- plished in installing offensive and defensive philosophies. Desire and determination were two key words of the ‘81’ squad. These traits were illustrated best in the Homecoming victory over Buchanan and the total domination of the previously unbeaten Lakeview team. Although team honors are always placed above individual ones, there were many post-season tributes heaped upon the 81 Lancers. Steve Skwara was selected as Most Valuable Player; Jeff Wagonmaker, Most Improved and Offensive Player of the season; Phil Ridenour, Defensive Player of the season. At Edwardsburg they shot 153 total. Two weeks later in the confer- ence tournament they shot a conference and school record of 310. Their 152 total on both the front nine and back nine broke the previous school record of 158 at Wyndwicke. Derek Siewert shot even par 71 to lead the golfers. Next, they won the Mattawan invitational with a tournament record 301. The previous record had been 326. Rob Ford was the medalist of the tourney with a even par 72 which broke the record of 73. Following that success they broke the school record of 152, which was set during the conference meet, by shooting a 148 on the front nine against Dowagiac at Wyndwicke. Rob Ford shot a one under 35, Derek Siewert posted even par 36, Dan Loikits 38 and Soctt Nelson 39. It was during that streak that Todd Wit- kowski recorded a hole in one on the 7th hole. The golf team had it all together going into the Regional. They shot an excellent 315 with Rob Ford tieing for medalist with a two over par 73. They beat the second place team by 10 strokes. But then the golfing season came to a sudden stop when two golfers inadvertently walked on the course and the team was disqualified. This team will forever have a place in Lakeshore’s sports history. To Seniors Rob Ford, Dan Loikits, Scott Nelson, Todd Witkowski and Junior Derek Siewert a job well done. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL———VARSITY VOLLEYBALL—VARSITY VOLLEYBALL V-BALL SHOOTS TO SECOND IN STATE!!! For the second consecutive year, Lakeshore’s varsity vol- leyball team traveled to the state tournament to engage in the last game of the season. This contest proved to be the ultimate confrontation as the Lancers, ranked second in the final Associated Press poll, faced 1 ranked Battle Creek Lakeview. Throughout the year, however, the girls had pre- pared for just such a match. For many, preparation began in July and August at Sport Camp International’s volleyball camp — one of the world’s finest. There, they practiced over 9 hours daily under the direction of collegiate, Olympic, and national team coaches and players. The team was officially selected in November and began training immediately — running laps, pumping iron, serving, setting, hitting, and throwing their bodies to the floor. In the weeks of practice, the 12 athletes became united through a sense of discipline and determination. A rugged pre-tournament schedule developed the exper- ience and consistency necessary to play with the state’s fin- est. Highlights in their 31-7 season included a perfect 7-0 conference record with Lorrie Eckel, Kim Edwards, and Lana Ramthun named all-conference players. In tournament play, the Lancers fared 2nd, 4rth, and 3rd at Berrien Springs, Lake Michigan College, and South Haven respectively. Six of their seven losses came at the hands of future state cham- pionship teams. The season’s climax occured during the last game as Lakeshore became the first southwestern Michigan team to defeat powerful Berrien Springs. The three-game thriller, 15-10,10-15,17-15, lasted nearly three hours. It was the perfect warm-up for districts. Districts, held at Sturgis, provided much pressure for last year’s champions. But the Lancers relaxed enough to squeak past determined Sturgis, coast over Comstock, and edge past St. Joe, 6-15, 15-5, 15-12, for the trophy. At Regionals, they gained a title birth by downing Fremont and later came from 1 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL' VARSITY VOLLEYBALL' behind with championship style, to conquer Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern. The effort was summed up by Fre- mont’s defeated coach who stated: “It’s not how good you are, but how consistant, and when you’re both good and consistant, you really have the edge.” In Howell, the Lancers spent three games clearing Fen- ton’s hurdle in semi-final final competition. The final match was a series of fluxuating momentum with Battle Creek La- keview enjoying the last spurt. It was an emotional event as the Lancers allowed an 11-8 lead to slip away in the deciding game to come up just short of the state championship. Still, the girls can be proud of their runner-up status. This season, they surprised no one, but struggled, fought, and earned each and every point. ■■ VARSITY VOLLEYBALL 1 4 COACH’S COMMENTS This was undoubtedly the best volleyball team Lakeshore has ever had. I attribute this to the following: physically and mentally talented players, excellent leadership from our sen- iors, particularly co-captains Lorrie Eckel and Lana Ramthun, good depth, and a winning attitude both on and off the court. The pressure of being the defending State Champion was very intense for all of us. Everyone was out to get Lakeshore this year! To make it to the state finals again required mental toughness, a singleness of purpose, and dedication to the sport and to each other. As a coach I could not ask a team to make a bigger contri- bution to a sport than these players have made. These sen- iors have made Lakeshore a respected state power in volley- ball in the last two years, and their absense will be greatly felt. I am very proud to have been associated with this group. They were a pleasure to work with, and I wish them contin- ued success in their endeavors. r VARSITY VOLLEYBALL VARSITY VOLLEYBALL VARSITY VOLLEYBALL MEET THE PLAYERS 11 DARCY DUSTIN: 5’9”, hitter, (Senior). “Nothing can equal the feeling of striving for a goal, especially when nu- merous amounts of people are striving along with you. The 1982 Lakeshore baseball season was a year of ups and downs. At times the Lancers showed signs of greatness but played inconsistently on other occasions and never really reached their true potential. The final record of 11-11 was not indicative of the team’s capabilities. The season ended on a positive note however as the Lancers beat Buchanan 2-1 in their final game to gain a share of the Blossomland Conference Championship with the Bucks. In that game senior pitching standout Scott Gelander was near perfect as he allowed only a leadoff single and then retired every batter after that with the exception of two who reached base on errors. The victory gave Gelander four for the year which was tops on the team. He also tied Rob Ford for the team lead in strikeouts with 47 and complete games with 4. Gelander was tough at the plate as well as batting .308 for the year. For his efforts, Scott was voted the MVP award by his teammates and was also voted as a Tri Captain. Senior Rob Ford was equally impressive as he finished the year batting .360; second highest on the team. He led the team in several categories as a pitcher including most innings pitched, (44); strikeouts, (47); most starts, (8); and complete games, (4). His earned run average was below 1.00 the entire year until the final day but ended with a very respectable 1.44 ERA. Rob also was voted as a Tri Captain by his teammates. Senior Mike Lange was voted as the Most Improved player. His batting average of .368 was the highest on the team and he spent much of the season over the .400 mark. Lange was the top relief pitcher as well with 4 appearances and a super 1.27 ERA. Dave McConomy, junior shortstop, was also voted as a Tri Captain and received the Golden Glove award as well. McConomy led the team in at bats, (72); hits, (20); doubles, (7); and runs batted in, (13). He batted over the .300 mark all season until the final game where he ended at .282. Seniors John Small and Terry Brien were top defensive players along with juniors Mike Smith and Dean Clem. Another senior, Ed Norkus, led the team with 4 home runs and 16 runs scored and junior Norm Payne was successful in stealing 7 bases in 7 attempts. Senior Andy Graham ended with a run average of 0.00 as he gave up no earned runs in 10 innings on the mound. He also batted .290 for the year. Back: Scott Plannger, Rob Doehrer, Tom Rivette, Tom Simpson, Rich Knapp, Mike Sarola, and Coach: Tim Farrow. Once again, the Junior Varsity Baseball Team, coached by Mr. Tim Farrow, had a winning (10-6) season for 1982. Highlights of the year in- cluded victories over arch-rivals Benton Harbor and St. Joe. Sophomore Rob Doehrer led the team in hits with a .386 batting aver- age (resulting in 15 RBI’s) and showed his colors on the field with an outstanding offensive and defen- sive effort. Other sophomores Tyson Hein, Roger Swierbut, and Bill Weir- ick were equally impressive with .368, .323 and .285 respectively, with Tyson Hein smashing a homerun. Freshmen Jeff Dorn earned a .333 and Chris Summers a .285. Other top frosh included Bill Koebel and Dave Keane. Together the team pooled their ef- forts to end the season with a sizzling .290 batting average. Kristi takes a mighty swing. JUNIOR VARSITY SOFTBALL I’ve heard of teamwork, but this is ri- diculous! SOFTBALL HAS LEARNING SEASON JUNIOR VARSITY SOFTBALL JUNIOR VARSITY SOFTBALL The J.V. Softball season ended with a 7 win — 7 loss record. Many were close games, ending with a one run difference. Tina Berghoff and Karla Hartline led the batting rands with a .714 and .674 average, respectively. Stacey Arney and Lori Capozio sup- ported the line-up with high averages as well. De- fense was an up and down struggle throughout the season, but the girls seemed to pull through at key times to save a win. Overall, the 1982 season was a good learning and training season for the young team. COACH BEAVERS VARSITY SOFTBALL VARSITY SOFTBALL VARSITY SOFTBALL LANCERS REPEAT LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1982 proved to be the year of the roller coaster for the Varsity Softball team. At one point in the season we were riding a 5 game winning streak which had followed a 1 win-3 loss record to start the season off. The highlights of this years squad were our ability to make the big defensive plays in the field, and, our knack for capitalizing on our opponents errors. Our season’s ending infield was the best defensive infield (glove, strong arms and experience) we’ve had at Lakeshore in the 10 years Varsity Softball has been a sport. With Renee Surch, Carol Mensinger, Marsha Lausman, Mary Fowler and Teresa Capozio manning the infield positions we were as solid as we’ve ever been at those key positions. Our outfield proved to be somewhat of a dilemna — our lack of game experience hurt us throughout the year. Starting at various times during the season in the outfield were Elaine Katsulos, Carrie Wales, Linda Glavach and of course our repeat All-League performer, Ronnie Lovelace. Seniors who have played their last game for Lakeshore, their season batting average and any post season honors are: Ronnie Lovelace — centerfield — .339 — tied team in triples (2), Kelly Sinkiewicz — second base — .297, Marsha Lausman — shortshop — .214, Elaine Katsulos — left field — .314. Other team members plus their batting averages were: Renee Surch — .323 — led in doubles (4), Teresa Capozio — .263 — tied in team triples (2) Mary Fowler — .232, Carol Mensinger — .303 — RBI leader with 17 — Home Run Leader (2) both grand slams, Carrie Wales — .193, Linda Glavach — .294, Judy Harris — .286. Team Average, .281. All-Conference — Ronnie Lovelace, Carol Mensinger, and Renee Surch. Our two starting pitchers for the 1982 season were Melissa Clanton (8 wins — 8 losses) and Tammy Spletzer (4 wins — 0 losses). Both did an excellent job of throwing strikes and keeping us defensively in the ball game. The 1982 Lancers did repeat as conference champions by clinching a share of the title in our last home game. This marks the third conference championship for softball in the last four years. Congratulations go out to all who have established this championship tradition. Coach Price. Melissa Clanton, Linda Glavach, Tina Franklin, Kim Klus, Teresa Capozio, Carrie Wales, Renee Surch, Back: Coach Price, Marsha Lausman, Tammy Spletzer, Mary Fowler, Carol Mensinger, Judy Harris, Kelly Sinkiewicz, Elaine Katsulos. After being greeted by members of the sophomore class, guests signed a new guestbook that the juniors would like to make a tradition at future proms. A slippery bridge guarded the entrance to a ball- room decorated with a Greek theme of pillars, murals, a pool and many streamers.
