Homecoming Queen And King, Leticia Rodriguez And Steve McGrath. Homecoming of 1980 was full of exciting events includ- ing the crowning of the queen and king, the dance, the first victorious game of the season, the floats, and everything that is part of Homecoming. The annual bonfire was a huge success with Howard Whitright receiving the Ugly Man Crown. Taking first place in the float competition, was the junior class with The Wiz.” The annual spirit award was received by the senior class. To add to the school spirit, the Lancer team achieved their first outstanding victory over the Cas- sopolis Rangers. Encouraged greatly by the crowd, the band performed an excellent halftime show. Suspense was finally terminated when Leticia Rodriquez was crowned Homecoming Queen 1980. To top off the excit- ing evening. Steve McGrath was crowned King at the after game dance held for the convenience of the visit- ing alumni which completed a perfect Homecoming for the Lancers.

Band Proudly Earns Division I Above: Brian Markley. Top right: Laura Laney. Bottom right: Julie Yore. Mr. Lesser The band's fearless veteran lead- er, Mr. Arnold Lesser, has taught band at Lakeshore High School for twenty-two years and claims he's still having fun. Lesser, a graduate of Northwestern Uni- versity describes himself as lov- able and handsome as all get- out . He boasts this year’s band was excellent and cooperative. It only took them seven weeks to learn the left foot goes on the yard line. Next year we’ll try it with music.” Other future plans include retirement where he will be able to pursue his favorite in- terest, girls. He comments he will never forget Lakeshore. One thing is for sure, Lakeshore will never forget Mr. Lesser. Inspite of the handicaps-injury, heat, strike, snow, and rookies- this year's Lancer Marching Band managed to pull off six per- formances in five weeks, including a 1st division rating at marching festival. Following a performance at the Berrien Coun- ty Youth Fair, the band traveled to Camp Friedenswald for five days of intense marching. There the band was pleasantly sur- prised to learn rookie band director, Mr. Tom Mitchell, was less green than expected. The band worked hard (and played hard) and returned to find lack of a teaching contract could stop their marching altogether. But the students met for addi- tional practices and their extra effort made their first perfor- mance a success. At marching festival, the band performed Star Trek”, a percussion feature; The Hustle , I'll Never Love This Way Again”, Espana , and Patriotic Spectacular . Six Judges scored the band an average of 91.73 points where 85 points and above was considered a first division. Show design, music, and marching were the three areas on which this score was based. The band was lead on the field by drum majors Chris Pinderski and Mindi Seel and flag corp captains Heidi Juengling and Natalie Carr. This year's outstanding squad was made up of rookies Mike Nelson, Pat Wozniak, Dave Gerken, and Mark Verduin. Rookie Takes Command The new kid on the block this year was Mr. Tom Mitch- ell. but his talent more than made up for his inexperi- ence. He quickly gained the respect needed to maintain the level of excellence for which Lakeshore’s Marching Band is known. Mitchell, a recent graduate of Western Michigan University, gave credit to the cooperation of faculty, band-boosters and the students for his success. All things considered, (six performances in five weeks) the band did very well. But I know we can be even better next year, said an optimistic Mitchell. Considering his enthusiasm and devotion, it is difficult to doubt this statement. Marching Band II
