Taking first place in the float competition, was the junior class with The Wiz.” The annual spirit award was received by the senior class. To add to the school spirit, the Lancer team achieved their first outstanding victory over the Cas- sopolis Rangers. Encouraged greatly by the crowd, the band performed an excellent halftime show. Suspense was finally terminated when Leticia Rodriquez was crowned Homecoming Queen 1980. To top off the excit- ing evening. Steve McGrath was crowned King at the after game dance held for the convenience of the visit- ing alumni which completed a perfect Homecoming for the Lancers. Top right: Laura Laney. Bottom right: Julie Yore. Mr. Lesser The band's fearless veteran lead- er, Mr. Arnold Lesser, has taught band at Lakeshore High School for twenty-two years and claims he's still having fun. Lesser, a graduate of Northwestern Uni- versity describes himself as lov- able and handsome as all get- out . He boasts this year’s band was excellent and cooperative. It only took them seven weeks to learn the left foot goes on the yard line. Next year we’ll try it with music.” Other future plans include retirement where he will be able to pursue his favorite in- terest, girls. He comments he will never forget Lakeshore. One thing is for sure, Lakeshore will never forget Mr. Lesser. Inspite of the handicaps-injury, heat, strike, snow, and rookies- this year's Lancer Marching Band managed to pull off six per- formances in five weeks, including a 1st division rating at marching festival. Following a performance at the Berrien Coun- ty Youth Fair, the band traveled to Camp Friedenswald for five days of intense marching. There the band was pleasantly sur- prised to learn rookie band director, Mr. Tom Mitchell, was less green than expected. The band worked hard (and played hard) and returned to find lack of a teaching contract could stop their marching altogether. But the students met for addi- tional practices and their extra effort made their first perfor- mance a success. At marching festival, the band performed Star Trek”, a percussion feature; The Hustle , I'll Never Love This Way Again”, Espana , and Patriotic Spectacular . Six Judges scored the band an average of 91.73 points where 85 points and above was considered a first division. Show design, music, and marching were the three areas on which this score was based. The band was lead on the field by drum majors Chris Pinderski and Mindi Seel and flag corp captains Heidi Juengling and Natalie Carr. This year's outstanding squad was made up of rookies Mike Nelson, Pat Wozniak, Dave Gerken, and Mark Verduin. Rookie Takes Command The new kid on the block this year was Mr. Tom Mitch- ell. but his talent more than made up for his inexperi- ence. He quickly gained the respect needed to maintain the level of excellence for which Lakeshore’s Marching Band is known. Mitchell, a recent graduate of Western Michigan University, gave credit to the cooperation of faculty, band-boosters and the students for his success. All things considered, (six performances in five weeks) the band did very well. But I know we can be even better next year, said an optimistic Mitchell. Considering his enthusiasm and devotion, it is difficult to doubt this statement. Marching Band II Varsity Cheers To Success! The Varsity Cheerleading squad of 1980-81. under the di- rection of Marilyn Nelson, was one the school could be very proud of. During the summer and throughout the school year, the squad captured many cheering honors in return for their hard work. Their first camp of the summer was an ICF (International Cheerleading Foundation) camp held at Notre Dame. At this camp, they captured the Grand Championship trophy along with being named the Most Congenial squad at the camp. The squad also returned home with a spirit frisbee, an award given to the most spirited squad, and various ribbons. Shelia Friske won an individual award as the camp's most outstanding cheerleader. The second camp the squad attended was a USCA (United States Cheerleading Association) camp at the University of Michigan. They again received high honors winning the Team Champion Top Ten plaque, along with various rib- bons. Winning this award made the squad eligible to com- pete in the National Grand Championships in Lansing, Ml on August 21, 22 and 23. Shalini Lall received an special cheerleading honor by winning first place in individual cheering ability and Debbie Fairleigh also received an individual award for her baton twirling. When the school year started, the squad traveled to Alle- gan, Michigan to compete in the Allegan County Fair Cheerleading Competition. Again they received top hon- ors by winning first place, Class B over seventeen other schools. The squad received a milk can trophy, $100 and free tickets to a college football game. Next, came the Coldwater Invitational held on December 6. Here the cheerleaders captured third place over 10 other schools. Penny Hysell received ninth place in indi- vidual cheering out of a cast of fifty girls. To begin the season, Jim's Dandy's” won the first annual Tri-City tournament, and then shocked Niles 41-40. It was to be Niles’ only regular season loss. At mid season, the Lancers were 10-0. and ranked sixth in the state. The team’s first loss was a shocking 3103 home court setback by St. Joe. From this point on, the team struggled, losing to Cass. Battle Creek and Pennfield. Earlier they handed Cass their only regular season loss, and Pennfield went on to win the State Championship. By the end of the season, the team seemed to have corrected their problems. In the first round of district play. Lakeshore beat the St. Joe Bears for the second time in three games, 61-60. It appeared as though Lakeshore would be the favorite to win the District when disaster struck. The teams’ 41-40 upset loss to Coloma was probably the most bitter defeat in our school’s history. Many individual honors were handed to the girls throughout the season. For Seniors. Dawn Gleffe was All-league, leading rebounder, third leading scorer, second all time leading rebounder, and seventh all time leading scorer. Lori Garlanger was elected to the All-League team, Detroit Free Press Class B All- State Honorable Mention. She turned in a four year career total of 836 points, good for second on the all time list. Named to the Blossomland All-Conference first team were Lancer standouts Tim Gelander. Jim Campbell, and Randy Strunk, with Jeff Buckner and Scott Ge- lander placing on the second team. Bill Bancroft, Doug Clem, and Keith Avery, also received Honorable Men- tion in the conference. Not only did the Lancers have an excellent front line, but amazing bench strength. One of the biggest strengths of our team was the play of our seniors off the bench; Bill Bancroft, Doug Clem, Keith Avery, and Mike Welch, stated Coach Sanford. At the close of the season, the Lancers were showered with many awards. These included Strunk being named to the All-State 2nd team and Jim Campbell receiving Honorable Mention All-State. Campbell also received the Most Valuable Player award. Jeff Buckner and Scott Gelander were honored with the Most Improved Player award. Lancers Celebrate Good Times In spite of their record and inconsistant play, the Junior Varsity of 1980-81 provided many exciting moments while playing a very difficult schedule. The JV’s lost seven games by 4 points or less while shoot- ing 40% as a team. Dean Clem led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. Norm Payne was the leader in assists, Magnus Ojert led in steals and Mark Waldman shot 50% from the floor to lead in this department. Other team members were: Rick Matthews, John Avery. Tim Belanger, Rob Wales, Frank English, Bob Fernau, Jeff Wagonmaker, Steve Berndt, Mike Kniola, Derek Siewert, and Barry Gidley. A Tough Season J.V. The Freshman basketball finished the 1980-1981 season with an 8-10 record. The little Lancers of Coach Adler started fast with a 4-1 record and a second place in the Lakeshore Freshman Tournament. The Frosh then trav- eled a rough road winning only 4 of their last 13 games. Our record doesn't really show it but we improved a lot towards the end of the season,” stated Coach Adler. Free throw shooting proved to be the downfall of the Frosh as they lost six games by six points or less while shooting only 49% as a team from the free throw line. Coach Adler ranked Mike Wyble and Scott Ruble as most improved players and Tyson Flein as the steadiest player throughout the season. 58 Frosh Basketball I First row: Perry Metz. Mark Williams. Freshmen Wrestling 63 State Champions Lakeshore’s varsity volleyball team, tagged Cinderella’s” by the press, certainly found their glass slipper in tournament play this season. Their state championship, the first in our schools history, proved to Michigan sports fans that Lakeshore plays two types of winter ball. Despite sickness and injury, first year coach Diana Davis substituted her team to a respectable 19-9 regular season record and a share in the conference title. Key matches included a season opener victory over rival St. Joe Bears, see saw compe- tition with conference threat Buchanan, and, in invitational play, an upset over powerful South Haven. The lady Lancers were definite underdogs entering districts. After gliding past Three Rivers, the giant killers” downed favored Sturgis 15-12, 15-12. At the same time, Vicksburg upset St. Joseph to advance to the finals where the two red powers clashed. Near perfect play allowed Lakeshore to defeat the Vikings 15-8, 16-14 for the district crown. The Lancers, considered undeniable longshots, traveled to Hastings for Regional competition. There, they eliminated Harper Creek 15-7, 12-15,15-11 and prepared for their toughest match yet-against awesome Allegan. The champs silenced Allegan 15- 3, 12-15, 15-1 to take the trophy home. For the team to win state would of course be the ultimate upset; afterall, they traveled to Pennfield with the worst seasonal record of any state qualifier. But, the Cinderella’s poised and perfect play would prove too powerful for both Linden and Warren Woods. The girls graciously downed both reginal champs in two games with scores of 15-12, 15-11, and 15-8, 15-7. The team's celebration lasted several days, but the memory of the victory will live forever. Throughout the season, the Lancers keyed on no particular line-up or individual. The talents of each team member were used effectively and the return of eight experienced players guarantees future successful seasons. This year’s volleyball team has done something never before accomplished by any team in Lake- shore s history-they won the State Championship! This is something every high school athlete dreams of, but very few are ever lucky enough to achieve. As our record indicates, we had our ups and downs this season; but we had them as a team. Being a first year coach I knew I had some things to learn, and I knew I would make mistakes. The team understood this and, as the season progressed, we worked through our difficulties and disappoint- ments and learned from them. This team impressed me very much, not so much because they won a state championship, but because they were willing to do what was necessary to win. They made personal sacrifices, putting the welfare of the team ahead of all other priorities. I gave no special awards this season. It was impossible to single out any particular player for contributions exceeding those of a team-mate. It has been an honor and a privilege for me to work with this group. I respect them for their accomplishments and wish them continued success. Diana L. Davis SALLY WOODS Co-captain Senior 5'5 -Hitter As my last year. I really will miss it. Everyone made each other feel important. I believe that what made us state champs was the many hard and well-coached prae tices before tournaments. Not only did they prepare us phys- ically. but mentally. Our actual victory wasn't nearly as exciting or enjoyable as the support of the entire team. Not once during tourna ments did anyone think of what else they could be doing. It wasn't just the six out on the floor who won it for us. Every player on the bench had talent, so we were never in real trouble. Being just a sophomore on the team was quite an ex perience. Senior leadership was the key to this year’s success-, of the four seniors on the squad three were four year play- ers. Mary Brey ended her career with a .358 batting average; Dawn Gleffe batted .329 and knocked in a total of 66 runs; Sally Woods led the senior trio with a batting average of .389 which included 14 doubles. Their defensive ability was more important than their stats at the plate. All three had great anticipa- tion and timing when getting to their fielding posi- tions. The 1981 Lancers captured the second Blossomland title in three years by posting a 5-1 league record. The squad also retained for the second year, the Twin City Championship title by defeating both St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. The team won the predis- trict game with St. Joe-, then the first round game in the districts against South Haven only to lose the district championship, 8-5, to Dowagiac. The Varsity pitching duo of Missy Aiken and Me- lissa Clanton combined for our overall 15 wins and 6 losses. Missy finished with a 6-2 mark; while Melissa ended with a 9 wins and 4 loss record. With the return of pitching staff, Renee Surch behind the plate, all-conference center fielder Ronnie Lovelace, and a solid infield of Kelly Sinkiewicz. Mary Fowler, Teresa Capozio and Marsha Lausman the 1982 Lanc- ers will keep up the tradition. Post season honors went to all-conference selec- tions Mary Brey, Dawn Gleffe. The Lancer J.V. Baseball Team ended another suc- cessful campaign with six straight victories to com- pile a respectable 12-5 overall record in 1981. Strong pitching by both Rob Ford and Bill Weirick were the keys to success. Weirick, a freshman, ended the year with a brilliant 5-0 mound record and a super 0.82 ERA. Ford was equally effective with a 5-2 re- cord; both losses being one-run games to Dowagiac. Ford led the team in strikeouts with 72 in only 42 innings and had a fine 1.50 ERA. Freshmen Roger Swierbut, Rich Knapp, and Tyson Hein all showed potential as pitchers in brief appearances. Leading hitter Norm Payne (.345) striked at least one base hit in every game except one. Payne, a sophomore, also led the team in most at bats (58); most runs scored (21); most hits (20); tied for most doubles (3); and fewest strikeouts (3). Roger Swierbut ended with a whopping .429 average although seeing limited ac- tion. Third baseman Dave Hagenauer also turned in a strong .333 batting average and catcher Mike Smith led the team in runs batted in (12) and tied for most doubles (3). In addition, outfielders Bill Anderson, Rob Doehrer, Bill Weirick, and Dave Ray played the entire season without committing an error on de- fense. They do this by running their own miniature business. In the fall, they form companies of about X) students, sell stock, elect officers, choose a product, buy raw materials, and go into production. The officers from Lakeshore were: Mike Doolan, Kathy Yampolsky, Sue Lillegard, Scott Lausman, Kendra Smiley. Kelly Ovens, Lisa Niezgodski, Ken Baily, Mary Reilly, Kathy Richardson. Chris Meschke, David Reilly, Evan Kirby, and Kelly McGee. Under the guidance of adult business volunteers, called Advisors, members use their weekly company meetings to manufacture their products, hold Board of Directors meetings, map out marketing plans, and keep their company books. At the end of the year, if the company is profitable, the stockholders receive their investment plus a dividend. Along with their traditional activities, the club also put on this years Valentine Dance and spon- sored an after-game dance. The Key Club volunteered their services for the community by ringing bells for Kiwanis, having a Christmas tree pick-up. and washing windows at the Whitcomb towers. They also escorted the queens during the Key to the Cities Tour” and ushered during various events in the auditorium. Many thanks goes to the key club for their support of the school and community. Keyettes is a group of girls sponsored by Kiwanis who contribute their services to our community. Attendance and punctuality is a must for this club. If a girl is late she must pay 25$. Each time a girl forgets to pay, another quarter is added. A member is allowed two excused ab- sences, and if a third meeting is missed, the member goes before the officers who decide if another chance is to be given. When a member misses four meetings, they are no longer considered a member. Some of the many projects Keyettes were involved in this year were a Christmas tree pickup, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, a school dance, a swim-a-thon to raise mon- ey for the YWCA, and they also sold play tickets to raise money to help the handicapped. The officers elected this year were: President, Laura Laney Vice-President, Rosie Buckenberger-, Secretary, Julie Harris Treasurer, Laura Callender. Advisor for Keyettes is Dick Laney. They experimented with lasers in the past and have recently added a telecommunications laser. This permits video transmission over a distance. The club also helps to promote the annual science fair. One of the clubs goals is to get students throughout the school, more interested in the science field. 122 Science Club This year’s Ski Club consisted of over 60 members, ranging from beginners to advanced skiiers. Every Thursday, the club went to Royal Valley Ski Resort where lessons were provided for the beginners and challenges for the advanced skiiers. The 1980-81 ski season was rather short due to the lack of snow, therefore, a few members decided to extend the ski season with some grass skiing. Members got out their ski equipment and summer clothes for a fun-filled day of sum- mer skiing. All in all, the ski season turned out to be a very adventurous activity. mogul our Above.- These skiiers are making good use of their ski equipment, even after the snow is gone. The crew members participate by designing and building the sets. They also run any community shows which are put on in the auditorium, such as the Miss Stevensville and Miss Blossomtime contests. The crew must first go through a 40-hour training period to get to know the stage. The apprentices conclude the year with the experience of three school and three community productions. Council sponsored most of the festivities including spirit week, building and judging of the class floats, the pep assembly, and the crowning of the king and queen. This year the traditional Homecoming dance was held after the varsity football game and turned out to be a big success. Next came the Variety Show. Their main function in this area was to finance the show, and feed all proceeds back into the auditorium in the form of equipment. Next on the agenda was a 3-D movie presented after school to entertain the student body and Jr. High. It too, was a huge success. The council kept themselves busy by sponsoring a benefit after game dance, the Aca- demic Letter Award ceremonies, they purchased a stero and speakers for the senior cafeteria, and something new this year was added-a blood drive. The student council’s main purpose is to be the voice of the student body, to represent and work in the best interest of the students. This year the executive board attended a leadership camp and work- shop in order to learn new and different ways to do this. Another one of their important duties is to approve or disapprove activity request forms sent to them by clubs, Classes, and organizations, and to assit them in any way they can. The student council's main sorce of income stems from operating the snack bar during all three lunch hours and at athletic events. The money they raise goes towards gifts to the school and will be used for next year’s Homecoming and Variety Show. Advisor: Tom Porter and Bonnie Boldt. Tina Franklin. Very alert. The 1980-81 Varsity Club spent a year of transition it began late and with a new sponsor. The first activity spon- sored by the Varsity Club was the an- nual Christmas dance held December 20, 1980. The proceeds from this dance went to buy a new track and field re- cord board, displayed in the cafeteria. The club then hosted the Freshman Tourney. The next project began the transition. They met with the head coaches, who asked to see the Varsity Club move in a direction of service to the Athletic Program and community. The next meeting they began a type of change which will begin the 1981-82 school year. Varsity Club Works For Athletics 139 Varsity Club First row: Steve McGrath. Shelia Friske, Mike Welch. Rosie Buckenberger Mary Brey Nancy Straight Graduation 201 There was a trooper who passed away not too long ago, but before he died, he gave this earth a gallant fight, a battle which made him quite unique, for he was a little American hero, who never gave in nor claimed defeat, and for this he’s earned- a spot in the Lord’s home. He also was a song and dance man, though funny it may seem, he performed skits, plays, and comedy acts for all of us to see. However few took him seriously, they never gave him a chance. He was a loud but shy character, who gave much of himself- just to be accepted by everyone else. Though unfairly treated by his peers, his high school days were his happiest years. God has a haven for special people such as he. It’s a space reserved in heaven- where he won’t have to pretend, rather a place he can be himself, even though he had pestered us and had once bothered1 Ssrnt may the school will miss the presence, of a young man known as Clay.
