The 1979-1980 “A” Band made its first ap- pearance at the Berrien.County Youth Fair. Then they spent a week at band camp where they practiced their routines in prep- aration for their football game and festival performances. On October 13, the senior band showed their marching abilities at Marching Festival where they were re- warded with a Division I rating. At the end of their successful marching sea- son, the 155-member band divided into sepa- rate Symphonic and Concert bands. They then performed together for their Winter concert, but participated separately for both the Band and Orchestra Festival and the Spring concert. The “A” Band also partici- pated in the Blossomtime and Memorial Day Parades. Jazz Band Plays On The 1979-80 Jazz Band, under the direction of James Bembenek, had a very eventful year. Besides performing many concerts at various schools, they also participated in the Jazz Festival held May 7 at Lake Michigan College. The jazz band combined with the choirs for the Fall concert and cut an album at their annual Spring concert. At the Spring concert, the winners of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Awards, Barb Mathis and Kevin Krieger, were announced. This row- dy bunch dressed up differently for almost every game, wearing such crazy outfits as ties, hats, pins, and shades and togas. With its fearless leader, the pep band added much to the spirit of the basketball games. Every year, when the Seniors graduate, new members are chosen from the Chorale and Girls Concert Choir, through auditions. Throughout the year the three choirs, along with the Lakeshore Singers, performed three concerts. The Christmas Concert fea- tured a special treat, when all the choirs combined to sing, Twas the Night Before Christmas. This year the Concert Choir par- ticipated in the Variety Show, “Celebrate ’79,” and performed Gloria, a Latin song, with the Niles and Andrews Choirs at An- drews University. 84 g o SB Girls Concert Choir Has Outstanding Season 1st: Denise Horn, Kelly Hines, Kyle Hayes, Alice Rosa, Kim Mckie, Donna Schmaltz, Lori Baum. 2nd: Holly Kurbis, Tracey Eggleston, Pam Duschek, Darci Delong, Terrie Kessler, Katrina Thompson, Rose Dover. 3rd: Leslie Richwine, Sue Woodrick, Kim Nielson, Nola Priester, Lisa Pruett, Rhonda Freeman, Kathy Tysman, Sharia Patzer. 1st: Dawn Hetfield, Sharon Baird, Carla Clem, Jill Sisson, Erin Righter, Gretchen Gast, Julie Yore, Jill Gotstein, Tina Coleman, John Studebaker. 2nd: Lisa Welch, Natalie Vanarman, Phil Eaton, David Fritz, David Smykal, Lori DeVries, Kecia Smiley, Laurie Kersch- baum, Kelly Ficher. 3rd: Carolyn Pihulic, Tammy Abbott, Laurie Alexander, Dennis Dasse, Eric Schadt, Ken Houser, Terri Anderson, Shauna Hartline, Laurie Freeman. Varsity Takes Honors The 1979-1980 Varsity Cheerleading squad was Superior in every way. They captured many titles and honors during the summer at two cheerleading camps, and also during the school year. The first camp they attended was an “International Cheerleading Foundation” camp. There the squad won the title of “Grand Champi- ons,” “Most Congenial Squad,” the “Spirit Award,” and various other ribbons. Tra- cey Jewell won an Individual award as the most outstanding cheerleader. The second camp they attended was the “Michigan State Cheerleading School.” The squad again won the top award, with Tracey Jewell, again winning a special honor. During the school year, the squad partici- pated in various competitions, beginning with the Coldwater Invitational in No- vember. There they placed first over eleven other schools. The cheerleaders then moved on to Regional competition, where they were one of five squads to qualify for state competition. At the state finals, the Varsity Cheerleaders placed fourth in the class B competition, and beat every other squad in their division. Cheerleaders were very busy throughout the year. During the summer they attended camp at Adrian College. They brought back two second place ribbons and a spirit award which was voted on by all the other squads at camp. They also took a first place over-all. During football and basketball seasons they did various things for the teams and coaches. In the winter they also attended a competition in Coldwater, Michigan. 89 Freshman; Successful First Year The Lakeshore Freshman Cheerleaders were quite busy during their first year of cheering at Lakeshore. The little Lancers cheered at all home Freshman football and basketball games. They also sold programs at the J.V. and Varsity home games. All together there were seven girls making up this year’s squad. Their advisor was Shel- ly Borgenson. 90 The 1979-80 Lakeshore Lancerettes, under the direction of Mrs. Debbie Adler, achieved great success and notoriety this year in re- turn for their many long hours of drills and practices. Throughout the summer as the squad pre- pared for camp, practices were demanding and intense but well worth the effort as the Lancerettes captured the Class AA Grand Championship at Badgerette Camp in Al- bion, MI. Along with the first place overall trophy, the squad brought home three first place ribbons, three second place ribbons, sore muscles and a great deal of experience in “Pomming.” In August, the Lancerettes traveled to Aurora, Illinois to compete against eleven other Grand Champion Squads from five different states, and al- though they received no awards, their per- formances were excellent and they again brought home many new ideas for the up- coming year. In addition to the summer camps and prac- tices, the girls held a min-clinic that sixty little girls attended and $120 was gained; they had a car wash profitting $80. The money from these three projects allowed the girls to purchase new sweaters and em- blems that have become favorites with both the crowd and the squad. More recently, the Lancerettes raised money to buy new skirts for the 1980-81 squad. Bake sales and Satur- day morning mini-clinics at the elementary schools were major contributions to the new skirt fund. The use of unique formations in their rou- tines was a well enjoyed highlight of this year’s performances as the Lancerettes used circles, squares, V’s, triangles, diagon- als, revolving kicklines and even a revolv- ing “X” to display their talents as a cham- pionship squad. The Lancerettes were not only invited to St. Joe and Coloma to per- form, but also to Bridgman to give a little girls’ mini-clinic. Yet the most exciting invi- tation was for the squad to perform at the Miss Three Oaks pageant in River Valley, where they provided a very pleased crowd with several of their award-winning rou- tines. Capping the year was a tearful performance at the last home game where the Seniors were honored for their fine year as Lancer- ettes. 91 Pom Pon Girls Are Class AA Grand Champs Front: Laura Kretchman, Kim Brien, Debbie Kerschbaum. He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief, You’ll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief.” “I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down here, I want this child to learn. I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes, I have selected you. Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain, Nor hate Me when I come to call him back again?” men lh “I fancied that I heard them say: Dear Lord Thy will be done.” .ci For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk ofgrief will run. Unfortunately the snow fall wasn’t what the members hoped for, having many Thursday’s canceled because of high temperatures and lack of snow. This lack of snow didn’t stop them from having fun on the slopes, coming home just as fired-up as when they left. To raise money for a day at Timberidge Ski Lodge in Kalamazoo, the members spon- sored an after game dance during this year’s basketball season. All in all, the skiing sea- son proved to be a success besides the fact that two members, Kelly Reed and Shelly Bennett, suffered broken legs. Other mem- bers included Connie Horton, Melody Jacke- meyer, Jackie True, Jeff Hassler and Randy Harris. Mrs. Rapp was advisor. Make-Up Crew Makes The Shows 101 This year, Lakeshore High School gave birth to a brand new club, the Make-up crew. It was an organization of all the different make-up crews from the many productions put on at Lakeshore High. Under the watchful guidance of advisor Jan Lindenfeld, the crew trans- formed fairly normal looking high school stu- dents into bizarre creatures and characters. The crew alternated chair people with each production and this year kept themselves busy by organizing the make-up for the Variety Show, Musical and All School Play. The crew also helped out on the make-up for summer theater and the Jr. High Variety Show. 102 One of Lakeshore’s “Exclusive clubs” is the “L” Club consisting of approximately 45 members. To be considered, you must have earned a varsity letter for participating in a sport for a full season. The prime concern of the “L” Club is to support the athletic teams by aiding them financially. The goals of the club change each year with the needs of the many sports in the school. The club sponsored a very successful Christmas Dance, along with a carnation sale. Thanks to a lot of hard work by its members, the dance was the most financial- ly successful project this year. Other pro- jects were very rewarding to the club. They included an after the game dance February 8th in which all the donations went to im- prove the training room, a three day Fresh- man Basketball Tournament in which all conference teams participated, and sweep- ing the floors for the basketball teams dur- ing the games. A donation was also given to the Booster Club to purchase a new camera. The “L” Club then planned a two day vaca- tion for its members during the spring. The clubs advisor was Mr. David Turley. “L” Club Supports Athletes Front: Cheri Meschke, Heidi Monteith, Robin Baehl, Mary Devoir, Karen Gobert, Sue Schewe, and Mary Stancik. 2nd: Dave Kastner, Dave Williams, Tami Ball, Lori Garlanger, Julie Schadler, Lisa Sorensen, Jill Wenzlaff, A1 Nitz, April Pinderski, and Rob Ford. 3rd: Rob Nelson, Terry Borr, Steve McGrath, Mike Welch, Dennis Metz, John Miller, Jon Gaunder, and Jeff Biddinger. 103 Key Clubbers Work For Our Community CLUB OFFICERS: Phil Laney, Treasurer; Dan Un- derwood, Vice President; Rick McNeill, President; Brad Parkins, Secretary. This year the Key Club, which consisted of 49 male students, carried on their traditional activities, plus more! For many years, the Key Club has held an annual Slave Day and 58-hour Basketball Marathon to raise money for Easter Seals. This year’s proceeds from the Donkey Basketball game went to the YWCA Perceptu- al Motor Program. The Key Clubbers also volunteered their services to the Salvation Army for “Bell Ringing” around Christmas time. Other activities were; the Val- entine Dance, and an after game dance, where the mon- ey went to Dan Tinkey’s training room. The Key Club- bers also escorted the Queens during the Key to the Cities Tour, and ushered the various events put on in the auditorium. Between all these activities the Key Clubbers found time for Intramural Basketball, taking on other school clubs and teams. The main purpose of the club seems to be “eat, drink, and be merry” (all in the German tradition, of course.) At the beginning of the year the members went on a bike hike to Baroda park, and feasted on Bratwurst, the staple food of the Germans. They celebrated Christmas and Fasching (german version of Mardi Gras) with parties where they also ate Bratwurst. One goal of the club was to have a party with something a bit fancier on the menu. They also joined the Spanish Club for a dinner. To finance these activities the club had a bake sale and a poster sale which were both suc- cessful. Another highlight of the year was a trip to Himmel Haus, in Elkhart, where the members stock up on all sorts of Ger- man goodies such as cheese, sausage, bread, and chocolate. A trip to Chicago to visit the Spanish Section was planned and they also attended Central Michigan College for a Spanish Festival. This years officers were: Jim Thomas, Sec- retary; Kendra Smiley, Vice-Secretary; Nel- ly Hoffmann, Treasurer; and Dave Kohn, Vice-Treasurer. Advisor is Mr. Inquilla. £ The Future Farmers of America kept them- selves busy this year by taking part in ac- tivities such as trips, land labs, sales and conventions. One of the trips taken was to the state convention in Topeka Kansas. Funding for the trips was made possible through sales of citrus fruits, money from the land labs, and their annual chicken BBQ. The organization is currently made up of forty members. To be a member you must be or have been enrolled in an agriculture class. The Future Farmers has been a club at Lakeshore for nineteen years. This year’s officers were Craig Hartline, President; Jim Jakubs, Vice-President; April Boyd, Secre- tary; and Steve Schmaltz, Sentinel. The ad- visor for this year’s chapter was Anita Steuver. The members are trained through the auditorium management pro- gram. To be able to participate in the club activities, a member must have 40 hours of backstage work along with community and school productions. They must also pass a test on their knowledge of the equipment and its operation. During the year, the stage crew assists with the production of virtually every production and event that the school and community presents. The 1979-80 Student Council had a busy and successful year. They kicked off the year with the Homecoming ceremonies. They sponsored most of the Homecoming festivi- ties including spirit week, building and judg- ing of class and club floats, the pep assem- bly, crowning of the king and queen, and finally the traditional Homecoming dance. Next on the councils agenda was the Vari- ety show. Their main function in this area was to finance the show, and feed all pro- ceeds back into the auditorium in the form of equipment. The student council’s main purpose was to be the voice of the student body, to represent and work in the best in- terest of the students. The council acted on all letters sent to them by students asking them for financial aid, assistance, and sup- port. Another one of their important duties was to approve or disapprove activity re- quest forms sent to them by clubs, classes, and organizations and to assist them in any way they can. The student council’s main source of income stems from operating the snack bar during all three lunch hours and at athletic events. All the money that was raised by the council was donated to various causes, spent on gifts for the school, and will be used for next year’s Homecoming and Variety show. 1979-80 Student Council: Front: Jayme Strefling, Lori Jewell, Diane Miller, Julie Warner, Tracey Jewell. The leading stealer was Frank English, with two. In the turn-over department, the team recovered eight fumbles, with Darren Froberg and Scott Zeibart the top theives with two apiece. PS Despite a record of 14-11, the Lakeshore Varsity Vol- leyball team showed some bright moments in compe- tition this year. The team came off their second loss, to highly ranked South Haven, steaming. They chalked up 4 straight conference victories until run- ning into conference champion Coloma. They lost a hard fought match 15-6, 12-15, and 13-15. The squad never gave up however and bounced back with 4 more conference wins. This brought them to a tie with Coloma in the conference. The team then experienced one of their worst nights of the season. They needed to beat River Valley and Cassopolis to gain a share of the conference cham- pionship, but were handed two bitter losses instead. One of the most thrilling encounters of the season was the pre-district match against Coloma. The team was ready to play as they downed the conference champs 15-10, 11-15, and 15-12. This win advanced the Varsity to district competition where they clob- bered Three Rivers 15-9, 15-5, but were knocked off by 5th ranked Sturgis. This loss ended the 1979-1980 season. Four year Varsity player Mary Stancik showed why she was a great asset by leading the team in serves with 57 aces. Nelly Hoffman proved consistant with 97 percent accuracy. Merriann Middleton lead the team in passing and setting. Leading spikers include Dawn Gleffe with 87 kills who was followed closely by Stancik with 86. CLOSING 188 ONIS yi3 191 cn Q Last fall First National Bank of Southwestern Michi- gan changed its name to Pacesetter Bank and Trust — Southwest. We made the change so our bank would be more close- ly identified with Pacesetter Financial Corporation, one of Michigan’s fastest growing statewide bank hold- ing companies. We have a new name, new signs, but physically noth- ing else has changed. You will still find the same friend- ly people offering the same good service. It’s just that now we have a new name to live up to. Now we’re the Pacesetter Bank. 193 YOUR LEVI WOMEN’S WEAR SPECIALTY SHOP!
