L.H.S. At Its Best Homecom 1977 Homecoming King and Queen, Kathy VanOsdal and Jamie Lingle The Queen candidates and their escorts, Judy Godfrey and Kurt Mead, Joanie Kuhn and Rick Rogacki, Kathy Campbell and Mike Soulan, Peggy Swisshelm and Kevin Campbell. This years Homecoming was a big success; our foot- ball team winning over River Valley 43 to 6. The weeks events started on Saturday, October 8, with the beginning of float construction. The Ugly Men contest began Monday with nine contestants: Dan Hanson, Scott Lee, Mark Murphy, Al Ochsner, Mike Poulson, Mark VanOsdal. They dressed up all week in wild outfits competing for everyones spare change. Thursday night was our traditional bonfire, beginning with a car caravan that drove right through Saint Joe's bonfire. Afterward, back at the school, Mark VanOsdal was proclaimed winner of the Ugly Men contest. On Friday we had beautiful weather for the afternoon assembly which was at- tended by most students. The first event was the spirit award yelldown which the juniors took away. Next came the parade of floats, followed by the underclass Queen representatives and the Senior Queen candidates. The Student Council revived an old tradition by introducing the King candidates. They were: Dave Devoir, Paul Freer, Jamie Lingle, Mitch Mammina, and Tom Underwood. The win- dow painting contest winners were announced with first place going to Lynn Heaslip and Scott Lee, se- cond place to Laurie Kroening and Nancy Clark, and Third place to Donna Harris and Pegi Yore. For the first time ever, the Senior girls challenged the junior girls to a game of football, played after the assembly. The Seniors, getting even for the spirit award loss, destroyed them 14-0. The fabulous pregame show featured the band, the underclass Queens, and the announcement of the float contest winners. The Juniors came in first, the Seniors second, the Medi- cal Careers was third, with the Freshmen float fourth. The Pom-Pon girls did Another Opening, Another Show, for their halftime show routine. The crown went to Kathy VanOsdal. Closing up the weeks acti- vities, on Saturday night was the Homecoming Dance. This year it was held at the high school. The band was Pulman West. The King, crowned at the dance, was Jamie Lingle. 11 Sixth Annual Variety Show Is Sellout! Even though we were not a championship team we played many quarters as champions, but just never seemed to come up with the big play at the right moment. However we did have two outstanding achievements this year; Paul Freer scoring 96 points, which is the most ever scored in a season at Lakeshore, and Dave DeVoir is now the all time top defensive tack- ier with 145 hits. We also had excel- lent leadership from our captains Odell Brister and Jaimie Lingle and four all-conference players, Joe Ro- driguez, Paul Freer, Marc Florian, and Dave DeVoir. The coaching staff will always remember these young men as a team that was fun to coach. Best of luck to the 77 football team and may all of you have many more excit- ing moments in the future. The 1977-78 Freshman Football team enjoyed a very successful season. Their only blemish was a 12-12 tie with Dowagiac. The team ended with a 5-0-1 record. The backfield of Matt Treacy, Todd Ehman, Tim Gelander, Dave Mack, and Brad Kerly com- bined speed and power to offensively dominate their opponents. The men who comprised the offensive line, Al Nitz, Mark Hickox, Mark Thornton, Rob Cambell, Ray Amicarelli and Doug Clem did an outstanding job of opening large holes which paved the way for many a score. The defensive unit was equally impressive. Tim Gelander, Bill Bancroft, Scott Kerlikowski, and Don Notaro spearheaded a tough, unyielding defense which played consistently all year. 22 Frosh Are Top's Congratulation's Class Of 1981 1977 J.V. Be- cause of a small squad and injuries many players were put in unfamiliar positions. Varsity Cheerleaders Jackie Johnson Judy Godfrey Kathy VanOsdal Kathy Campbell Joanie Kuhn Sonnie Bryant Amy Khan Jannette Miller Jamie Biddinger The 1977-78 Varsity cheerleaders had a great year raising school spirit and cheering on our teams. They attended Golden Eagle Cheer- leading Camp in Albion, Ml, and brought back many new ideas. Besides winning the regional trophy, they won second place in the poster contest, the spirit megaphone, ribbons, and a plaque for being the friendliest squad there! Winning the regional trophy en- abled them to compete in a National compe- tition and they represented Lakeshore well. Kathy VanOsdal was chosen for the top cheerleader award. SPIRIT! J.V. This season's squad was an enjoyable group of young ladies to work with. They worked and played hard to reach the limits of their basketball potential and learned a great deal about themselves, athletics, and competition from both the highlights and the low points of the season. Kim Foster, the team's leading scorer and one of the most intense competitors in Southwest Michigan was named to the Blossomland All-Conference Team as a guard. Kim also was voted by her teammates the Most Valuable Player Award for the 1977 season. Jamie Sinkiewicz, also named to the All-Conference Team as a guard, was the team's 2nd leading scorer and led the team in assists and steals. Jamie was voted the Defensive Player of the Year by her teammates. Marlene Peldys, the leading rebounder and 3rd leading scorer, was selected Honorable Mention All-Confer- ence. Linda Snyder won the Most Improved Player Award, as voted by the team. With hard work and a commitment to excellence this summer, we are enthusiastically anticipating a reward- ing and successful season next fall. US THEM OPPONENTS Uk 43 r sim LMC 49 51 . What started out to be a rebuilding year turned out to be a very successful season for the 1977 Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Team. With only three players returning from last year's 15-5 squad, this year's version was some sort of un- known quantity. The outstanding leadership of the sophomores and the tremendous improve- ment of the freshmen led to many surprises this past season. What figures to be a very rough non- conference turned out to be four impressive wins over LMC, Benton Harbor, South Haven, and Sturgis. The Blossomland Conference turned out to be much stronger than in years past, with Cas- sopolis taking the conference title and Edwards- burg second and the little Lancers taking third place. Individual honors went to Melody Middleton and Debbie Hammermeister in scoring, Middleton in field goal percentage, Kelly Oudbier in assists, Sal- ly Woods, Middleton, and Natalie Carr in re- bounding. With seven players with game exper- ience returning from this year's team. Coach Maier believes that the girls are a year away from reaching their fullest potential! Next year figures to be quite a year! Along with the unbelievable performance of Lingle and Smith who combined for 85 wins and 1 loss, were Joe Rodriguez and Frank Pitts. Rodriguez closed out his wrestling career with an impressive 29-6 record. He won his 2nd Conference title and took first in the district and regional tournaments before being eliminated at the state tournament. Pitts earned a fine 31-4 record, won the Conference title at 145 and placed 2nd in the district tournament before being eliminated at the Regionals. Underclassmen having impressive seasons were Conference champs, John Murphy (178), Mike Reilly (105), and Conference runner-ups Joe Campbell (145), and Gary Smith (98). Other varsity wrestlers making key contributions to the undefeated season and Conference championship were Bob Harper (112), Ray Runge (126), Matt Mohler (132), Mark Slabaugh (165), Ron Burns (Hwt), and Marc Florian (191). Reserves Ken Miston and Ron Field contributed to some key wins and earned a varsity letter. Coaches Bittenbender and Price find it very difficult if not impossible to replace Lingle and Smith. To start, they sold wastebaskets to raise money for new uniforms and be- gan preparing for their Fall Concert which was held on October 26th. During the Variety Show the Concert Choir performed Twentiana to the beat of the Charleston. In December, the Lakeshore Singers were organized and did a special Christmas program at the Zion Church in St. Joseph. All the choirs participated in the annual Cho- ral Christmas Concert on December 14th. Many choir members participat- ed in the production of Lit' Abner. Early in April the Concert Choir had the special thrill of performing with the Andrew's University Academy Choirs, the Requiem , in their beau- tiful church. The year was rounded out with the Spring Concert in May, dedicated to the choir's graduating Seniors. The Women's Concert Choir also wore their new uniforms for the first time. Let's Make Music LHS Presents Li'l Abner! The story of Li'l Abner revolves around a small community in the middle of nowhere named Dogpatch, USA . The United States government proclaims that Dogpatch is the most unnecessary town in the whole country and makes plans to test the A-tom bomb on it. In their mad search for something necessary, the townspeople come upon Mammy Yokem's Yokemberry Tonic . Mammy (June Craig) and Pappy (Ron Zordell) have used the tonic on their son Abner (Scott Caple) since the day he was born. Little did they know that besides making the men-folk big and strong, it also took away ail interest in the opposite sex! Adding to the plot are Daisy Mae's (Holly Mischke) many attempts to catch Li'l Abner as well as many delightful songs. The plot revolves around a tiny country named Grand Fenwick . Grand Fenwick's main (and only) export is their exquisite wine — Pinot Grand Fenwick . The United States manufactures a cheap imitation and Grand Fenwick becomes incensed. The ruler of Grand Fenwick, Gloriana, The Twelfth (Peggy Swis- shelm), sends for Tully Bascom (Paul Nus) and together they decide to declare war on America. Tully, with the aid of his trusty soldiers, sails to New York Harbor and proceeds to attack the city with bows and arrows. Ironically, he wins! DIRECTORS: Ken and Patricia Lindahl.
