The 1976-77 varsity squad did an outstanding job this year to raise school spirit and also perform at games and pep assemblies with precision and unity. During the summer, they attended the All-Star Cheerleading Camp at Quincy College, Quincy, Illinois. There they were named Grand Champions and voted the Most Spirited Squad. This high standing entitled them to compete in the state competition which was held at C.M. U., in November. After a hard day of competition, our Lakeshore Cheerleaders were named second in the state. The squad proved that hard work and dedication does pay off. They would like to offer a special thanks to Miss Hasse, for her support and assistance during the year. Congratulations, girls! 107 J.V. Cheerleaders Fall Sports Cheerleaders-Laryl G i 11 is. Patty Hoge was voted by her teammates as the Most Valuable Player and Kim Foster voted as the Best Defensive Player. Coach Davison commented, I feel we had a successful season because the girls never gave up, worked hard, and played to a high-percentage of their potential. We have a good nucleus of players returning next year, so with some hard work and concentration on team work this summer I'm really looking forward to next season.' £oa J IIS JV Girls Basketball The 1976 Girls JV Basketball team ended with a 14-5 record, of which three losses were by two pts. The girls finished sec- ond to unbeaten Dowagiac in league standings, losing to the Chiefs 42-40 and 37-35. Two Sophomores were elevated to Varsity, Cathy Kunkel and Deanne Gleffe. Jamie Sin- kiewiez was tops in ten statisti- cal catagories. The team's trademark was a sticky defense, allowing a scanty 23.4 pts. per game, and a very aggressive, hustling style of play. This years team was relatively young and faced an awesome schedule. But these handicaps were overcome by strong team leadership, competitive toughness and longer practices. When the season finally ended the proud wrestlers had compiled a fine 17-3 dual meet record, scored well in a number of invitationals and placed 7th in the State Meet. The amazing thing about this years team is that Terry Runge is the only senior. Runge wrestled Varsity for four years, compiled a 101-26 record, won three Conference titles and was the 1977 Regional Champ at 112 lbs. He will be difficult to replace. However, with 14 lettermen back and a number of other challengers Coach Bittenbender is confident that next years team could be the best ever. Bluechippers Doug Smith and Jamie Lingle will be back to lead next years effort. Smith won 41 straight matches Before suffering his first loss in the State Championship Finals in the 105 lb. weight class. Lingle wasn't far behind with a 45-2 record and placed 3rd at 132 lbs. in the Class B State Tournament. Other returning wrestlers who enjoyed a winning season were Conference Champ Joe Rodriquez 31-10-1, Frank Pitts 23-15, Mike Crowell 20-16, John Murphy 16-11, Rocco Liogghio 24-15, Joe Campbell 11-10 and Mike Reilly 10-9. At the Annual Awards Banquet Terry Runge was honored as the Most Valuable Wrestler. Doug Smith and Jamie Lingle shared the Outstanding Wrestler Award and Mike Reilly was voted the Most Improved Wrestler. 120 FRONT: Bob Sipes, Brian Kemp, Jerry Federan, Marty Albanese, Brad Prevatt; SECOND: Don Pitts, Jay Adams, Ray Runge, Ron Burns, Dwane Cahill, Bob Harper, Matt Mohler; THIRD: Coach Price, Vince Grezyck, Jeff Pinderski, Rick Cross, Ken Miston, Rick Imler, Coach Bittenbender. 122 123 1976-77 Varsity Basketball KNEELING, LEFT TO RIGHT; Greg Hopkins, Paul Freer, Kerry Myers, Kevin Campbell, Dave Devoir, Doug Thompson, Odell Brister. Some bad--some good, perhaps, but these reflect the time past. A brief review of the season: In December we won two while losing six; not a very impressive beginning. In January we split even, winning three and losing three, a better showing. In February, we began to reach our potential, winning five and losing one. A long road, but we finished with ten wins and ten losses, including an eight win-six loss record in the conference. Paw Paw brought a final end to the efforts of Kevin Campbell, Mark Forrest, Tom Jager, Mike Mason and Larry Toth. The ultimate questions in athletics are: Were we competitive? Did we reach our potential? Did we en- joy our work? These questions, for the graduating seniors, have been answered only to be asked again of the returning lettermen; Odell Brister, Dave De- voir, Paul Freer, Scott Lee, Mark Stockwell and Doug Thompson. Season highlights would include: Victories over Brandywine and River Valley in over- time, our convincing win over Buchanan, and our exciting last home game victory in the last five seconds over Edwardsburg--a team which has yet to win over Lakeshore. What memories? The oranges at halftime, the drills in practice, the games we won and lost. All of these, 124 but most importantly, the young men who played. £ p.Ti —umm Lakeshore 55sa .... The Lakeshore Lancer Junior Varsity Basketball team finished with the best record of any Lancer J. V. team in the history of Lakeshore: 17-3. This year was also the first time a Lancer J.V. team has gone undefeated in the Blossomland Conference play. Their record was 14 wins and 0 losses. Defense was the name of the game for this excellent team. They allowed only 44.2 points per game and only gave up over 50 points four times all season. Defensive standouts were Scott Andrews, Greg Hopkins and Dave Goodwin. Offensively, the Lancers averaged 54.5 points per game. Individually, they were led by Joe Shafer-12.6, Dave Goodwin-12.9, and Scott Andrews-9.0. The leader in field goal percentage with 59% accuracy was Scott Andrews. Greg Hopkins led the way in free throws with 51%. Joe Shafer led the way in rebounds both of- fensively and defensively. 5 This team had a terrific attitude and seemed to enjoy working hard to win. 1976-77 was a great year for the Lancer J.V. team. 127 Junior Varsity Scoreboard ■ 3iac Haven River Varf y Brandywine Thrge R ivers Goloma Bronson' Brandywine Cassopolis Saint Joseph Dowagiac Buchanan River Valley Coloma B randy w ine; Ed wards burg J BjML inference: 14 wins-0 losses. Seniors Kim Brown and Kathy Mensinger were elected co-cap- tains of the team, and leading players for the season included server, Mary Beth Varney with 132 Pts.; passer, Kim Brown; setter, Ivy Schewe and spiker, Kathy Mensinger. However, 3 matches did lot afford this team time to lerfect these skills under jressure. The little girls then returned in the Fall to perform the school song with our Pom- Pon Girls at one of the football games. Besides performing at the football and basketball games, and help- ing out at the wrestling meets, they also held a raffle to guess the weight of the entire squad. Some of their routines included; per- forming with the St. Joe squad at the L. H. S. -St. Joe basketball game, a flashlight routine, and a routine to Buttons and Bows, with little girls. Her life was complicated by Nick Arnstein (Buddy Frenzel), who she fell in love with and later married. Adding to the plot, was the unwanted admiration of her dance instructor, Eddie Ryan (Craig Steenbergh). Fanny's mother Rosie (Julie Belonger) and her friend Mrs. Strakosh (Paula Wesner), were constantly reminding Fanny that she should get married. Fanny however, wanted to pursue a career which began in Keeney's Theater. The owner, Tom Keeney (Robb Wallis), had his doubts about her abilities. He was finally convinced of her talent when she was hired bv Florenz Ziegfeld (Eric Stokes) to perform in the Ziegfeld Follies. 1. Nick and Fanny toast before dinner. 2. The Council worked this year to meet community needs. Industrious volunteers woke up early on December third to help with the Red Cross Blood Drive. Joining the Berrien County Student Council (BSCA) opened doors to interscholastic relations and unity between schools. These meetings brought about the Anything Goes contest in which area schools competed in zany events. The 18 member LHS team took first place. The Snack Bar gave students an opportunity to have a snack during lunch and catered to the public during the basketball games. With the candy profits, the Council bought new speakers for the cafeteria. Funds from the fifth Annual Variety Show were set aside for auditorium improvements. Before the year's end a new constitution was ratified enabling more class participation and reducing the number of Council members.
