1776 driftwood 1976 500L GAN The Lakeshore Driftwood for 1976 is a blend which includes a past, a today, and a future. Bits of our past may be discovered in stories and pictures here in this book. Most of the book deals with this year, but a future may also be glimpsed in these pages. This future relies on the graduates of Lake- shore High School. Two hundred years ago the school district was covered by marshes and huge pine forests, inhabited only by Indians and a few fur traders. The villages and roads were nearly a hundred years away. But after America won her Independ- ence, people began moving west and by 1836 our district began to attract settlers. Lincoln Township was one of the first townships to be settled. In 1836, Major Timothy Smith platted several lots at the mouth of the Grand Marais (Grand Mere) and called the new town Liverpool. His dream was to improve the existing water power and to use the power to cut lumber from large pine forests that lined the lake shore. Major Smith's town of Liverpool never materialized and even though the town was later renamed Blooming Grove, the second attempt also failed. In 1867, T.W. Dunham started a large mill in the Grand Marais and erected a pier on Lake Michigan to load schooners. In the same area an ice house was operated and large quantities of cranberries were harvested and shipped from the marshes. As the first settlers were moving into Lincoln Township, they found it necessary to plank the roads with wooden boards and all of them agreed that Lincoln Avenue would be impossible to build. Until 1863, the soil in Lincoln and surrounding townships was regarded as unfit for orchards. However, the wastelands of the town- ships were transformed into productive orchards and fields. TABLE OF CONTENTS ATHLETICS 19 ORGANIZATIONS 59 ADVERTISING 81 FACULTY 97 ACTIVITIES 113 UNDERCLASSMEN 133 SENIORS 161 CLOSING 185 During the year 1879, Lincoln Township con- tained 455 school age children of which 302 at- tended school. The value of the schoolhouses was $5000, and the total ex- penditures for the year of 1879 climbed to $2,185.98. Three small towns sprang up in Lincoln Town- ship: Glen Lord, Vineland, and Derby. Glen Lord was a station on the Pere Mar- quette Railroad and was named after the man who donated the land and right of way. The first Post Of- fice began operating in 1879 at Glen Lord and continued until 1905. Vineland was a station on the Michigan Central Rail- road and the Post Office was opened in 1891. Derby was also a station on the Michigan Central Railroad and the Post Office was opened in 1890. Two towns in the area grew and became prosper- ous. Stevensville and Bar- oda are the largest towns in our district and were both settled around the turn of the century. Stevensville was platted by Thomas Stevens, a prominent banker from Niles, who also lent his name to the town. He platted out one square mile which was quickly occupied by 117 settlers. The first Post Office began delivering mail in 1872 and Stevensville was incor- porated as a village in 1894. Baroda was platted by M.B. Houser who origi- nally named it Houser. The United States Post Office rejected this name so he renamed his town Baroda, after a city in India. The first Post Office was estab- lished at Baroda in 1890 and the village was in- corporated in 1907. For many years Baroda served as a station on the Vandalia Railroad Line, nicknamed the Pumpkin Vine. Today we know that our district is in the middle of a large fruit growing region and Lincoln Avenue was not impossible to build. Instead of cutting down the trees of Grand Mere. 393 acres were purchased in 1974, to be preserved as an Ecological Study Area. The present is clearly built on the past, but the future is built both on the past and on the graduates of Lakeshore High School. 4 5 MINI CONCERT BAND Dave Addison Belinda Brown Cindy Carlsen Randy DeMorrow Randy Dienes Tom Gaul Tom Gillis Jeanne Graber Donna Harris Penny Hagaman Steve Hamlin Mark Harder Bob Harper Melanie Hendrix John Imbs Beth Nepstad AI Oscher Terry Pauler Karen Pelkey Glen Powell Mark Rantz Tim Rantz Sue Sanford Marc Saurbier Mike Seel Carol Stelter Carol Stream Don Vitek Scott Walters Dave Whipple Cathy Young Blair Zordell Ron Zordell BICENTENNIAL MINUTE BETSY ROSS Betsy Anderson Lisa Ball Holly Mischke Chris Robertson Laura Shapleigh Lisa Thomas Connie Arnt PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM Connie Arnt Shelly Borgersen Sonnie Bryant Damita Edwards Rhonda Edwards Kelly Gain Laryl Gillis Linda Goodrow Diane Gosnell Patti Gotstein Sandy Gotstein Amy Khan Donna Potts Cathy Yore VALLEY FORGE Brad Bengtsson Rich Braga Dan Hansen Kevin Hoge Joe Krejci Mike Mead Eric Tam Mike Waldmann STAGE CREW Larry Banks Rick Fechner Dave Gilbert Bill Hansen Diane Lambert Jim Krejci Pam Lauck Dan Search Janet Talbot VARIETY SHOW SELECTION OF THE NATIONAL BIRD- MIKE WALDMANN, ERIC TAM. The officers were Captain, Cindy Jellum; Co- Captain, Donna Bollenbach- er; Secretary, Mary Hunt; Treasurer, Kathy Meyer; and Mrs. Price, Advisor. The Pom-Pon Girls were very active during the sea- son. They performed at all home football and basketball games and made five sepa- rate performances at St. Joe, Coloma, Buchanan, Edwards- burg, and Cassopolls. They came up with several differ- ent ideas for their routines this year, such as a flash- light routine, a country girl routine, a routine with little girls, plus various steps in- cluding the Charleston, the Bump, and the Soupy Shuf- fle. Besides dancing, the Pom-Pon Girls marched in the Liberty Days Parade, performed as lions, horses, bears, and elephants in the Variety Show, and sponsored the Sponge Throw Booth at the Winter Carnival. They also sold Homecoming Mums to help pay for their new uniforms. In short, the season was very successful and above all, fun. 12 LAKESHORE LANCERETTES FRONT ROW: Cindy Washburn, Melanie Hendrix, Kelly Gain, Paula Wesner. Varsity Football 21 The 1975 Varsity season was characterized by aggressive, intense play defensively and an even combination of run and pass, offensively. Reaction, pursuit, and gang tackling was stressed this sea- son on defense. Except for two poorly played games, we had an outstanding year controlling the opponent's running game, limiting them to 150 yards per game. Our best effort came from our secondary in setting a school record of just 56 yards per game allowed through the air. Individual standouts for our defensive unit were Craig Shafer, who set a new school record of 126 tackles and was an All-Conference performer; Jim Porter, our monster back and another defense All-Conference player; Tom Jager, who led us with 4 interceptions (one for a touchdown); and Pat Newell, who played a very steady defensive tackle for us. Offensive standouts were Kevin Campbell, a junior quarter- back; Mark Krager, who led the team in rushing with 507 yards; Tom Jager, who led in pass receptions and was an All- Conference performer; and Pat Newell, who made the All- League team as an offensive tackle. Craig Shafer was chosen Most Valuable Player by his teammates. The team was coached by Dave Topping, Dave Price, and Jim Sanford. 1. Keith Arend, the Lancer's punter. 2. Men and women from one end of the spectrum of American society to the other have lost confidence in government institutions and the political leadership. Disaffection is sweeping through the country. The frustrations do not substantially vary from group to group and the grievances are common. Yet with all of this shared frustration, diverse groups still find it possible to work together for fundamental change. THE BICENTENNIAL ERA provides a setting within which we can develop and re-establish that common language of unity that will perpetuate what made America great - the language of the Declaration of Independence. It will help foster the spirit of the American Revolution and maintain America’s distinction of fostering freedom for all. STEVENSVILLE HIT BY EARLY MORNING FIRE Early Sunday morning. May 28, 1909, a fire broke out in Stevensville and three build- ings were totally engulfed before the crew of the Pere Marquette train discovered the blaze. The fire threatened to sweep the entire town but it was stopped when the St. Joseph fire department was called in for help. How the blaze started is unknown but before it was finished it had destroyed 3 buildings and a home adding up to $7,500 damage. The buildings destroyed were; The Maccabee Hall, The Robert Pfihdler blacksmith shop, The Amos Stewart blacksmith shop, and a frame residence of Mrs. James Ormstead, The Macabee hall was used as a town hall and community center and also served as the gym- nasium for the high school. The Robert Pfidhler blacksmith shop was beneath the hall with the other shop and building adjoining. GAINED GOOD HEADWAY. The blaze had been burning strongly before the crew of the Pere Marquette passenger train discovered it. The passengers of the train got off and woke the citizens of Stevensville. In a short period of time, people from the surrounding countryside were aiding in the struggle to save the ad- joining buildings. HAMPERED BY EQUIPMENT. The fire department was ladened with misfortune. Engine trouble developed, crippling the pumps to such an extent that it was feared that the subdued fire would break out again. As a result the St. Joseph fire department was called. While the St. Joseph department must be given credit, no credit should be taken from the work of the local fire department.
