Congratulations to the Class of 1974. Your success at Lakeshore is measured not in terms of what your teachers taught you but rather in terms of what you were willing to learn. By now' you should have discovered that education is a personal thing; if it is to be obtained, it must be desired. 1 he past thirteen years have been the “formal” education years. Though these years are now part of the past for many of you, your education will continue for the remainder of your life. There is an inexhaustible reservoir of knowledge waiting for you to tap. It is our hope that these years at Lakeshore have given you the tools necessary to continue to pursue knowledge for. in future years, your success will be measured in terms of what you want to continue to learn. 8 L TO R: Miss anderbeck. A Quill and Scroll charter was issued to Lakeshore High School in 1973, the first year since the school was built. The new members of the Lakeshore chapter had to meet several requirements. They are all juniors or seniors, are in the upper third of their class, have done superior work in some phase of journalism or school publications, were approved by the advisor and were approved by the secretary-treasurer of the society. The purpose of Quill and Scroll is to instill in students the ideal of scholarship; to advance the standards of the profession of journalism by developing better journalists and by in- culcating a higher code of ethics; to promote exact and dispassionate thinking, clear and forceful writing. The motto of Quill and Scroll is: YE SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH SHALL MAKE YE FREE. 63 Corresponding Secretary-Kim Krohn. Treasurer-Betty Benson lark Sanford. President-Shelly Kinder. BACK ROW- I arry Livengood. Lisa Shapleigh. Marc Snyder. Mark Root. Student Council is one of the most important student organizations. Each year it is responsible for furnishing the snack bar at lunch and at all home basketball games and wrestling meets. Aside from producing an annual Variety Show and Winter Carnival, the Council provides the students with a variety of special assemblies, both entertaining and educational. This year the Council negotiated with the administration in areas concer- ning dress code, exam exemptions, open lunch, modified curriculum, handbook revision and a new policy for student sales. A special county-wide Student Council Workshop was held in February to exchange ideas with ten area high schools in hopes of improving the efficiency of our Council. Cancellation of homerooms this year blocked the communications between the Student Council and the student body. The Council overcame this obstacle by communicating through the morning announcements, the bulletin board in the cafeteria, special class meetings in the auditorium and by boards around the school. Several student polls were taken and the results highly influenced the ac- tions taken by the Council. Those elected to Student Council are representatives of the student body. Any actions taken by them are for the good of the students as a whole. THE BACKBONE OF THE COUNCIL JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES SEATED: .Julie Snyder. Linda McGrath. Mary Faher. Kathy Steinke. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Membership in the National Honor Society has become recognized nationally as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student. Membership is, however, more than an honor; it carries with it a responsibili- ty and should be considered the beginning of an obligation. These Lakeshore students were inducted on the basis of their Leadership, Character, Scholarship and Service, the qualities for which National Honor Society stands. GERMAN CLUB The German Club started its year off with its annual bikehike to Sportman's Park. The weather was quite brisk but was still enjoyed by the club’s soccer and football fanatics. There was plenty of food and time for the old members to get aquainted with the new. Our Winter Carnival booth this year proved to be the best ever as we were able to start up our German band again, thanks to a group of hard working kids and their director, Mr. Lesser. The “Bier Garten” was the most talked about booth at the carnival. “Fasching”-the German equivalent to the Mardi Gras was held in late February and gave the kids a chance to experience this old German tradition. We closed the year with our annual German dinner of authentic Old Coun- try” recipes selected and prepared by the members. The officers’ election was also held at the dinner. Activities of the club started with a Spanish Dinner to enable members to become acquainted with one another. We carried on our past program of sponsoring a fostor child whom we correspond- ed with. One of the main highlights of the year is a trip to Mexico during spring break. To raise money for this we held two bake sales followed by a month long candy sale. During the W’inter Carnival the Spanish Club was represented by the Spanish Fiesta and Donkey Target Throw. The dinner was very well received with the largest turnout ever. Pinatas made by students were auctioned off. Fer- nando the Lion, a large orange stuffed animal was raffled off to further aid the Mexico Trip. The trip, under the supervision of Mr. Inquilla, was arranged by Renee and Lisa Arbour with Becky Shapleigh handling the money. In the spring another fiesta was planned. With a membership of 29, the club once again started out the year by helping Kiwanis with their annual Pancake Day. We had a can goods drive in November and collected over 200 cans of canned goods and donated them to the salva- tion army. In January we once again held the annual Christmas tree pick up, picking up an estimated 500 trees. In February the club challenged the faculty in a Donkey Basketball game, a game won by the Key Club by a score of 20-8. As a service to both the school and the community the club undertook the project of ushering at all the events held in the auditorium. All together we ushered for 27 events some of which were Hello Dolly, Variety Show, Miss Blossomtime Contest, and Pete Foun- tain civic concert as well as the many concerts and programs presented by the different groups. Slave Day was again held in March with the 25 Key Clubbers selling for a total of $98.00. This year marks the first year ever that the Key Club has beaten the faculty in the annual basketball game. Audience participation was the key to the fall program, “Let’s Sing the Old Songs.” The choral Department also presented the Annual Christ- mas Concert. The two all girl choirs sang around a human Christmas tree made by the Concert choir. The Spring Concert, again, featured all of the groups. This concert showed the many faces and attitudes of music. Outstanding Seniors awards were presented to Debra Harvey and Sam Dutcher. Debra Harvey also received a Performance scholarship to Olivet College. Summer camp scholarships were presented to outstanding Juniors Karen Svensson and Laurie Kahn. The Concert Choir and Madrigals appeared in many com- munity concerts and attended some of the area festivals. The Concert Choir was honored to sing Motzart’s “Te Deum” with the Andrews University Choir under the direction of Dr. Rudolph Strukoff. They were invited to sing at three conven- tions of well known organizations. The Madrigal singers par- ticipated in all of the Choral concerts and also participated in the Southwestern Madrigal Festival. Some of the members went to a solo and ensemble festival. Thespian members participated in all dramatic productions at Lakeshore this year. The float that they entered in the club division during homecoming took first place. A popular moneymaker this year at the Winter Carnival was the water balloon toss. A new addition to Thespian activities was the presentation of one acts. They were featured in original skit in the Variety Show. They also presented a childrens play—“The Unwicked Witch” to raise funds for the Stratford, Ontario trip. Thespians are a National Organization whose members must earn points through various dramatic activities to main- tain membership. Mr. Lindahl. Gail Miller. Tim Conard. Steve Snowden. Doug Gast. This year students were responsible for all technical work on band concerts, choral concerts, “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”, the Varie- ty Show, and Miracle Worker”. This year in auditorium management class, these students designed and built the sets for the musical. Hello Dolly”. The stagecrew worked with various community organizations this year: the Baroda, Stevensville. and Blossomtime Queen Contests, The Red Stocking Review, LMC Band Concert, Western Mich. University Band, and the Twin City Symphony. Students acquired ad- ditional experience when working with such professionals as The World’s Greatest Jazz Band, The Paul Hill Chorale, New York City Ballet Com- pany and Pete Fountain. Tim Cuprisin JOURNALISM This is the first year that the school paper has functioned as a Journalism class. In past years the paper was published by a non-chartered “club” con- sisting of students who had drive and ambition and enjoyed self-satisfaction. The quality of “The Lakeshore Drifter” has im- proved this year due to the fact that the students meet daily in a classroom situation to work on the paper. “The Lakeshore Drifter, printed bi-monthly, is completely published by students who researched and wrote the articles, typed the finished copy, ob- tained pictures and laid out the pages. Ads were sold to local merchants to fund the printing expenses. In addition, the class sponsored holiday hakesales and dances, including the annual Christmas dance in the Stevensville gym. The newspaper is a service to the student body as well as a learning experience for the journalism students. Shelley Kinder Editor. Loree Adelberg. and Lynn Pelkey. 98 Steve Schmidtke. Griff Cook. This was a very explosive high scoring foot- ball team that also played great defense. We had outstanding leadership from our tri-captains. Chuck Hoge, Larry Livengood, and Charlie Shafer. Through the leadership of these young men, the team had pride and showed team spirit. The following boys made the All Conference football team: Dave Baker. Ray Wood, Larry Livengood, Mike Knapp, Chuck Hoge, Rick McGrath, Brian Peterson, and Charlie Shafer. Charlie also made the All State team. It was the hard work and dedication of our second team that contributed greatly toward our winning the Blossomland Championship. And because of all our out- standing players this team will be remembered because they didn't quit but came back to be champions. The girls 1973 basketball season proved to be an overwhelming success when the squad finished with 14-5 and the first ever Michigan High School Athletic Associa- tion District Tournament championship. The varsity squad was exciting to watch and showed good fundamental basketball. Sophomore Jodi Rabbers. the team's “Most Valuable Player”, paced the team scor- ing with 223 points, good for a 11.7 per game average. Man- dy Smith, another hot-shot sophomore, tallied 206 points and senior Kolette Kretchman totaled 197 points for the season. Strong rebounding by sophomore Sue Kunkel and junior Ann Stockwell, the squads “most improved player , made the Lancer quintet always tough to beat. Affectionately known as Denny’s Dollies , the squad demonstrated team play, good sportsmanship, and depth in numbers as all girls scored during the season. An exam- ple of strong team play was seen in the District Tourna- ment when, in the first quarter, they scored 25 pts.. while holding their opponent scoreless. Led by senior super-wrestlers Rick McGarth, Ed Krager, and Mark Mohler the Lancer Matmen compiled a 13-1 dual meet record and a very impressive 4th place finish in the Class B” State Tournament. Rick, Ed, and Mark were also the first Lakeshore Wrestlers ever to place in the State Tournament. The major accomplishments of the “Big three were astounding. Rick McGrath compiled an unbelievable 34-0 record and captured every event encountered including the prized 155 pound state title. Ed Krager was close behind with a 30-2 record and state runner-up at 145 pounds. Mark Mohler also had an outstanding year compiling a 30-6 record which included a 4th place finish in the state meet. One match that Lakeshore Wrestling Fans will be talking about for a long time was Mark Mohler’s 3-2 decision over 2 time state champ Warren Watson of Brandywine in the conference finals. Although these three outstanding athletes will be more than missed next year Coach Bittenbender looks to next season with great optimism. With eleven lettermen returning the matmen should have a better balanced and more ex- perienced team. Veterans Stan Schuck, Gene Miston, Rick Murphy, and Mark Krager will handle the upper weight class duties next season while Dave Kent, Terry Runge, Rick Runge, Tom Rennhack, Scott Hosnedl will hold off the op- position at the other end of the scale. In the middle exciting Dave Baker, Joe Offet and Mike Miston should win more than their fair share of matches. Combine these veterans with this year’s J.V. squad and you should have the nucleus for a fine 1974-75 wrestling season. Major team highlights included Blossomland Conference Championship, Holiday Tournament, and double wins over St. Joseph. The Lancers were led by All-State Charlie Shafer, who with Steve Palmer was elected to the Honorable Mention Team. The Lancers completed the season with 19 wins and 4 losses. Mike Holland, the most improved player, along with Marty Mason earned valuable experience for the 74-75 season. Although Lancer fans will miss the board play of Shafer, Palmer, Hoge, and Livengood; the moves of Marty Craig shooting a jumper; the passing skill of Brian Peterson; and the hustle of Brian Krueger; the dedicated and spirited Lancers will continue the successful tradi- tion of Lancer basketball. Basketball The Lakeshore Lancer Junior Varsity Basketball team ended the season with a respectable 12 win 8 loss record. The 10-2 Conference record tied them with Cassopolis for the mythical championship. Offensively the Lancers averaged 58.8 points per game. Individually they were led by Don Altic and Jim Porter, both with a 13.3 average. Pat Underwood led in field goal percentage with a 66f7 accuracy. Fred Wagner took the free throw honors by making 69( of his charity tosses. The team leader in assists was Jim Porter with 55 followed by Fred Wagner with 37. Defense was a strong point of the game, holding opponents to under 50 points 7 times. Freshman Tom Jager led the team in blocked shots with 32, while Keith Arend had 20. In defen- sive rebounding again Don Altic led with 128 and Tom Jager was second with 82. In another important category, steals, Don Altic led with 44 followed by Keith Arend and Jim Porter with 31. They finished 9-3 in Conference play, good for a second place tie with Cassopolis. The freshman were known for stingy defense, allowing only 47 points per game, while scoring 53.4 a game. Kevin Campbell was 3rd for an 9.8 average. Jim Rosenhagen totaled 170 for 8.9 points per game. Rod Nitz average 6.3 for fifth place on the team. Mason was the leading rebounder with 261 for a 13.2 average. Toth was runner-up with 216 for 11.3 per game. In summary, it was a good season for the freshman, who could have easily been 16-3. The Pom Pom Girls appeared in many activities including; Homecoming, all home basketball games, one basketball game at St. Joe, and at home wrestling meets, where they helped in the scorekeeping. They also invited the Pom Pom Girls from St. Joe and Coloma for two separate performances. The Pom Pom Girls participated in three dance numbers in the Variety Show and marched with the Band in the Blossom Parade.
