First and foremost was a great group of seniors who knew what winning was all about, and always were at their best when they had to be. Also, an outstanding junior class complemented the seniors both offensively and defensively. It was a team that had fine balance between offense and defense, averaging 28 points per game offensively and allowing just five defensively. It was a team that averaged 230 yards per game rushing, but still had great ability to move the ball through the air. It was a team that uniquely was never behind in a game. It was a team with many outstanding individuals; 8 making All-Conference; 5 making All-Southwest Michigan; and 1 making All-State. It was a team that played together, and never though about losing. It was Lakeshore’s first undefeated football team, its first team to beat St. Joe, and one that will long be remembered. BLOSSOMLAND ALL CONFERENCE SELECTIONS: STANDING L-R Ken Siewert. CATHOLIC G 9 The Junior Varsity Football Team was 4 plays and a few yards short of ending the season with a 6-2 record. A couple of bad breaks and two unusual plays, one being a field goal by Cass, kept the Lancers from a better season. Although fundamen- tally strong in 1972, they should be a big help to the 1973 Varsity team. Several players should step in to fill spots vacated by graduating Seniors. St. Joe was the only opponent to out-rush us, as the team ended up with 1,415 yards for a 3.8 average. TOP ROW: L-R Rick DeWulf, mgr , Bob Utter. Alan Martin. Steve Mahler, Kyle Lorton, Coach Keith. This year’s homecoming queen was Pam Borgerson, also a Lakeshore cheerleader. The other queen contestants were Jan Craig, Sandy Hillegas, Laurel Thomas, and Gayle Thomp- son. The Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes were represented by Betty Benson, Janet Ash, and Sue Contreras respectively. In contrast, the 1972 Ugly Man was Jeff Russell. Homecoming also involved floats, the bonfire, window painting, yell downs. This year’s window painting winners were Leta Dorsey and Linda McGrath, and Alice Clearman and Sandy Nitz. The winning club float belonged to the FFA, while the Seniors won the first place for the class float competition as well as the yell down. This was the first annual yell down competition of its kind at Lakeshore. The Senior Winners received a plaque entitled: “An- nual Homecoming Award—to the most spirited class of Lakeshore High School.” LEFT: Sophomore Representative, Janet Ash: Freshman Representative. The Lakeshore Wrestling team concluded its best season ever and appears to be on its way to becoming a Southwestern Michigan power. Captain Ken Bailey led Mark Mohler, Rick McGrath, and Mark Krager in completing an impressive 9-3 dual meet record. Although the matmen managed only a third in the conference, they still set some impressive records. Mark Krager and Rick McGrath were the conference champs and both will be back next season. Ken Bailey, Stan Schuck, and Mark Mohler were the conference runner-ups with Schuck and Mohler returning along with Ed Krager who was 13-1 before becoming ineligible. Mohler, Bailey, Krager and McGrath led Lakeshore to a third place finish, 1 j point out of se- cond place in the Districts. All four of them advanced to the Regionals. Rick McGrath, Mark Krager and Ken Bailey advanced to the semi-finals of the Regionals before being beaten. Ken Bailey fought back in the consolation to take third and advance to the State Tournament at Western Michigan. At Western Ken won two matches and although he didn’t place, he was the first Lancer mat- man ever to place higher than 4th in the Regionals and win a match at State. Coach Bittenbender is certainly optimistic about the future as only Ken Bailey departs. The balance of next year’s team should improve considerably with the return of Tom Rennack, Scott Hosnidl, Kim Sisson, Rick Runge, Mike Miston, Marc Snyder, Steve Schmidtke, Gene Miston, along with the Krager brothers, Rick McGrath, Mark Mohler, and Stan Schuck. 21 The referee looks for the fall as conference champ Rick McGrath applies a pinning combination. The graduating seniors; Rick Farrow, Bruce Arter, Jerry Kuhn, and Terry Lauver, dedicate their achieve- ment to those Varsity members who have preceeded them and challenge the returning lettermen to repeat their accomplishments. Although the conference title slipped through our fingers, this year the team is proud of their season which included many honors.—Our first appearance in a Holiday Tourna- ment, in Niles, was rewarded with the runner-up trophy. The Lancers finished the season with the area’s most potent offense, averaging 91 points per game. —Rick Farrow and Charlie Shafer were elected to the All-Conference Team. —Lancers Beat Chiefs-Lancers Beat Chiefs!! For the First District Championship!! These achievements were possible through the dedication to hard work, self sacrifice, and enthusiasm for the sport. The student body experienced that enthusiasm and tournament fever which the Lancers generated through our success. We hope this enthusiasm carries over for our 73- 74 season. 28 WE ARE NUMBER ONE!!! Our Varsity squad finished with a 3-9 record while the J.V.’s ended with a 6-6. Our matches were triangulare. Each school played the other two schools a match of 2 out of 3 games. Where two closely matched schools met in competition, it sometimes meant the girls played for quite a while. Our girls did a fine job, each one was dedicated and never gave up when it was obvious we were destined to a losing season. JUNIOR VARSITY FRONT: I ft to Right Annette Adams, Kay Godfrey. GIRLS VARSITY TRACK Our varsity track team this year saw Lakeshore send five girls to State and take a fourth place in the regional held this year at Lakeshore. Competition in the area was keen but Lakeshore managed to keep pace with all area schools. Berrien Springs and St. Joe were the teams to beat. Lakeshore ran both schools twice and narrow- ly missed defeating them. Winning meets this year for the team were against River Valley, Coloma, and Buchanan. Lakeshore produced a lot of single winners. With a lot of record breaking times and distances. Some single winners for Lakeshore this year were Marge Dickey setting a regional record in the shot put with 39'9 and also capturing 9th place in the state. Cathy Graham and Tammy Riegel, setting times of 12.2 and 12.3 respectively, in the 100-yard dash, Mary Lkingspon with 6:09 mile record, Peggy Root with a 65 second 440 yd. dash and a second place at the regional and Cathy Necas (15'1 ), Tammy Riegel (14'9 ) and Janet North (14'812 ) recording good distances in the long jump. Lakeshore relay teams did well all season. The 440 yd. relay team composed of Tammy Riegel, Janet Kimley, Cathy Graham and Gale Bauske set a new school record with a time of 56.2. In addition, the 880 yd. relay team made up of Tammy Riegel, Janet Kimley, Cathy Graham and Peggy Root posted a time of 2:03.8, took a second place in the regional and sent all its members to participate in the state meet. We concluded our first inter-scholastic game by defeating St. Joe by the unbelievable score of 26-23. Our girls were also vic- torious over Brandywine, Edwardsburg, and Cassopolis. Our season was clouded by a few minor injuries and very poor weather. But each of us managed to live through each prac- tice and game. Even Janice Beckman survived. Charlene Baker, Patti Lawrick, and Pam Pratl, were our Senior Stars. They each played well at their positions. Char pitched two of our four victories, Patti was our catcher and Pam was in the field. WTe have a strong bench and should be very tough to beat next year. All in all, we worked, we played, we lost, we won, but most important we had one heck of a time. SEASON RECORD 16-4 In 1973 Lakeshore baseball was back in action after a year layoff. The team had a good season with a 16 win and 4 loss record. Without losing that valuable year of experience this team could have been just as easily undefeated. The team was led by a good group of graduat ing seniors. Senior Rick Farrow was the leading pitcher with a 6-3 record and a .206 ERA. The top hitter for the year was Senior Steve Caple at .460, followed by Junior Brian Peterson .378, Senior Jack Novotny .358, and Senior Ken Bailey .341. Jack Novotny was the team leader in times at bat, runs scored, most hits, most extra basehits and runs batted in. The highlight of the season was winning the Twin City Tournament. The victories were over Benton Harbor in the first round and Lake Michigan Catholic in the finals. The Lancers had five members make the All Blossomland Conference Team. The play, chosen by the Seniors and their director Mr. Lin- dahl, was entitled, “You Can’t Take it With You.” It was performed on three consecutive nights, and the profit was used for the Senior Spring Excursion. Beside its entertaining and dramatic effects, the play provided a perfect opportunity to promote class spirit and unity. It is apparent that the reinstatement of this tradition will continue at Lakeshore. Diplomats Wives The all-school play for 1973 was Woody Allen’s “Don't Drink The Water”, under the direction of Miss Jan Lindenfeld. The play ran for two consecutive nights, April 13 and 14. The story centers on an American fami- ly, the Hollanders, who. after taking pictures of a missile sight behind the Iron Curtain, are forced to seek refuge in an American Embassy. Love comes to the young bumbl- ing Ambassador’s son and the Hollander daughter. The story ends happily with their engagement and the family’s return home. VARIETY SHOW ‘THOSE WERE THE DAYS” TOP LEFT: Our own Edith Ann, known around school as Melissa Adams, remembers all the things we used to think about when we were kids. BOTTOM LEFT: Band director. Arnold Lesser zapped us with another first. Our new stage band performed brilliantly and added a light hearted touch to the evening. TOP RIGHT: Debbie Harvey, who was the torch singer for the evening, brought back the life of the 30’s. BOTTOM RIGHT: Sabrina Spinelli sang about a young girl in love with her doctor, with the song “He Touched Me.’ 52 TOP RIGHT: Jonny’s Kang dancing to the beat of Rock Around the Clock in the Big Dance Contest was a high point in this year’s Variety Show. BELOW: The Charleston was popular in the Roaring 20’s. Here Junior and Senior Flappers” bring back its popularity. TOP LEFT: Robin Gench. as Jonny Angel, gave us a glimpse of teenage music in the 50’s. TQP LEFT: The Thespians put on a fine performance portraying various teachers and other school celebrities. In the office scene Barb Bell shows Mrs. Dichman. Mary Soper, and Mrs. Mielke. Karen Dunham, her fabulous picture. TOP RIGHT: A big part of the show didn’t happen on stage, but backstage and in the projection booth. The light and stage crews did a great job with lighting, sound effects, cur- tains. and numerous other jobs. Here Jo Ellen Kent waits for her curtain cue. BELOW: A few of the senior girls came up with a humorous skit called Sob Story. It was about a typical Derby family who had to pay off the mortgage on their farm. Lakeshore .Junior Miss ’73 Barbara Bell LAKESHORE JUNIOR MISS 1973 The Junior Miss Contest was sponsored by the Lakeshore Junior Chamber of Commerce each year. The JC’s and their wives contributed a total of over one hundred hours in training, rehearsals, and the final event. Each year the Lakeshore Junior Miss is eligible for area and state contests which are also sponsored by the JC’s. This is certainly a worthwhile con- tribution to the community and the JC’s deserve a big thank-you for their efforts. Diana Lynn Queen and Her Court 56 Susan Shuran Miss Stevensville '73 MISS STEVENSVILLE Cindy Newman. Terry Sprague, Susan Shuran, and Michelle Racz 57 Following a now-annual tradition at Christmastime, the Student Council once again sponsored the Christmas win- dow contest. There were about 12 entrants and five dollar prizes were awarded to the winners. Anticlockwise are some of the very best windows, star- ting with the Grinch, a familiar Seuss character which adorned Mr. Schuster’s window, and was done by Chris Ringler and Cindy Albrecht. Ann Pierson’s snowman was a typical winter figure on the courtyard window by the bookstore. A different approach to the Christmas theme was a snoozing mouse, painted by Kathy Anderson and Lyn Banks on a lunchroom window. And what would Christmas be without Santa Claus? He too was on a cafeteria window, and his painters were Leta Dorsey and Linda McGrath. On the courtyard window across from the office was a poor reindeer whose antlers were decorated by an elf with help from Connie Both, his painter. SENIORS Senior Class Officers L-R. It started with a great football conference victory, and a 14-0 victory over St. Joe. The Senior Play was next, and showed sacrifice and unity on the part of many of the graduating class. This was also the first Basketball District cham- pionship, and winning homecoming float. The Senior Class has dispersed and will probably never again be together as a unit of people. The Christmas Concert featured candlelight and old favorites which were presented to a packed house. The month of March was the culmination of weeks and weeks of hard work for the presentation of “Fiddler on the Roof'. Choral students and their director. Miss Archer scored another great success with Fiddler” playing to a full house during both nights of the production. The Madrigals, Concert Choir and Cadet Choir made many appearances before civic groups and school groups during 1972-73. A highlight of the year was the Solo and Ensemble Festival in Kalamazoo where Nino Mammina, Debra Harvey and Jean Sacha received first divi- sion ratings for their performances. At the Spring Concert Miss Archer announced that several students were going to summer music camps. Two of the students who received special awards were Lori Adelberg who was presented with the Monday Musical Scholarship, and Jean Sacha who was accepted in the “Young Americans.” 119 Blue Lake Scholarship Winners: L to H: Kris Pierman. The Christmas tree sale was the first major project for the year. This was followed by the Christmas Dance which we went together with the F.H.A. We went to contests and Lakeshore was well represented. Two delegates and four courtesy corps members were sent to the State Convention. Ed Kretchman received the State F.F.A. Degree and was elected as State Vice-Presi- dent from Region I for the coming year. On May 5 was the annual Chicken Bar-B-Que which the profits from this, the land lab, and other projects went toward the purchase of a new International 574 tractor and three-bottom plow. There were many meetings to attend and new state officers to elect. For the first time all members who attended the convention went to a banquet held in the ballroom. During Christmas we conducted a clothing drive to provide needy families in the Twin Cities Area. We also picked up the Christmas trees and disposed of them after the holiday. In the spring we “Marched for Dimes”, collecting over $200 to help fight muscular defects. At Easter time we sent Easter cards to all of the elderly residents of the retirement homes in Berrien County. W'e also had money-making pro- jects, such as “slave-day” and the “Key Club versus Faculty” basketball game, so that we could offer a monetary scholarship to the most qualified graduating senior. No show could possibly be complete without the help of these kids and Mr. Lindahl, the auditorium manager. They are not a club, but a hard working group of students who enjoy working the various technical areas of producing a show. Members range from Freshmen to Seniors. Starting members must work 40 hours on stage work, including 6 shows in the auditorium, and be approved by Mr. Lindahl, to gain full stage crew membership. The highest position, which was held this year by Bill Hammond, is Senior Technician. To reach this you must have a complete knowledge of the workings of the auditorium, be responsible, know how to work with rentals, and be approved by three teachers, the principal, and by Mr. Lindahl. There were many shows put on this year that involved a lot of work, a lot of time, and a lot of patience; but the kids still came through with such great productions as: “Fiddler on the Roof’, the Variety Show. “Don’t Drink the Water”, and the Band and Choir concerts. Also included were outside Rental shows: Michigan Steelhead and Salmon, Community concerts. Twin City Symphony, Wally Taber, and the Blossomtime Concert. But the biggest show was the Peter Nero concert on March 17. This was the first time that they got to work with a real professional performer. With all the experience gained this year, next year should prove twice as successful for this dedicated group. 139 SCIENCE CLUB The Science Club has been very active in the following fields: Meteorology-E. Student Council is one of the most important organizations of the school because it acts as the voice of the students. This year the Student Council accomplished many things. At the beginning of the year a special com- mittee was put in charge of the dress code. After much con- troversy and deliberation, they managed to extend the boundaries so that girls could wear blue jeans. The Council sponsored Homecoming as well as the Winter Carnival and the Intermural Sports program. Lakeshore’s first annual variety show, “Those Were the Days”, was also sponsored by Student Council. The Student Council snack bar was open during all lunches, at home basketball games, and at the tournament games. A bike rack, two picnic tables, pic- ture frames for the club charters and two assemblies were paid for out of Council funds. At the end of the year a special Council committee managed to get permission to open the courtyards at lunch. This year has been a great year for Student Council. The newly-elected Council plans to accomplish as much as possible in the coming year. 146 Christmas Dance Activities POM POM GIRLS Front left to right: Sandy Hillegas. Lacinda Bonczkowski. Hair! Big Spender was everyone’s favorite. The Lakeshore Pom Pom Girls of 1972-73 had a very enjoyable year. It started with a perfor- mance at the Berrien County Youth Fair, followed by Homecoming, basketball games, and highlighted by the Blossom Parade. Many long hard hours of practice went into making the Pom Pom Girls a success. They sold programs, had many bakesales, and were in charge of the dinner at the Winter Car- nival. All of the profit from these things went toward their new uniforms which they made themselves. They were the chorus of the variety show. They also did exchange performances with other schools at basketball games. Much of the Pom Pom Girls’ success is due to Mr. Lesser and the Pep Band who without them wouldn’t have any music to shake their pom poms to, and of course to Mrs. Rutlin who was head of the Pom Pom Girls. Without her they wouldn’t be able to be as spectacular as they were. Also, thank- you public for letting them prove that they were the best. 149 CHEERLEADERS Front: Jan Craig: Back row left to right: Pam Borgersen, Judy Vergot, Sandy Irwin.
