STEVENS VILLE, MICH. LIFE 13— Life is you and me and everyone else. Life is always growing, always reaching. Life is having roots in the past, being nourished by the present, budding through (sometimes with force and pain) to the new, and flowering in showy anticipation for tomorrow, life comes in all colors—all beautiful! Life is groovy. Life is simple like breathing; but Life is complex like really knowing right from wrong. Life is loving—and being loved. Life is free to be who we were meant to be. Life is work you're proud to do. Life is hope. Life is purpose. Life is die exciting unknown beyond the moon, beyond war, beyond ghettoes, beyond nationalism, beyond bigotry, beyond poverty. Life is the 1000-year-old redwood tree. Life is the ant at the picnic in the park. Life is wisdom, whether from a younger or older person. Life is being desirable because you're you. Life is making mistakes, admitting them, and not repeating them. Life is anger and aggressiveness. Life is restraint and control. Life is crying to a happy ending to a story, to the beauty of a sad song, to die why of Martin Luther King's death. Life is running barefoot along a sandy beach. Life is laughing at life's absurdities. Life is the rice farmer in North Vietnam, The divinity student in Biafra, die sugar grower in Cuba, the tailor in Hong Kong, the store clerk in Red China, the draft dodger in Canada, the Minuteman in Missouri, the Black Panther in San Francisco, both Judge Hoffman and the Chicago defendants. Life is being heard and hearing others life is knowing you count and helping others to feel they count, too. Life is being concerned for people, not because it's good politics, nor good business, not because it's good religion, not good strategy, not because it's good seduction, but because you really care for someone. Life is no two alike. Life is dreaming die impossible dream while keeping your feet on die ground. Life is openness. Life is consistency. LIFE IS! Credit, U. C. Press - LIFE IS WORK- LIFE IS... Despite playing some outstanding ag- gressive football, three of the first four games were lost. In the latter half of the season the won-lost record was reversed-finishing with a 4-4 record and a 4-3 conference showing which produced a 3rd place finish. Perhaps the outstanding feature of the 1970 team was its strong defensive play. Al- so, this team had the needed character to turn what might have been a disastrous season into a fairly successful one. 41 STEP BV HOMECOMING ’70 LAKESHORE 9 BRANDYWINE 6 STANDING, L- R: C. Mohler. Under new coach, Bruce Bittenbender, The Lakeshore Matmen earned an 11-6 record. They had three conference champs--Gordon Worth, Kevin Sprague, and Tom Moynihan. Moynihan emerged as the first District Wrestling Champion in Lake- shore history, while Sprague was runner-up. Both boys went on to the Regionals, where they were eliminated. With seven lettermen returning next year, including such outstanding performers as Freshman Ed Krager, Sophmore Tom Bellavia, and Junior Gordon Worth, it appears that the Lancer Matmen will have a very bright future. Many honors were bestowed upon the Lakeshore Lancer's Varsity Basketball team this year. A winning record of 14-4 for die season; a winning Blossomland Conference record 11-1. (The loss handed to them by Buchanan by 1 point!) Picked up another beautiful trophy as Co-Blossomland Conference Champions. The Lancers this year had the honor of being the first team in the conference to win three straight championships in a row in basketball. The Lancers ended the season rated 14th in the State of Michigan by the United Press International, 2nd Associated Press. Chris Knapp was named on the All-Star Team by WOOD-TV of Grand Rapids. Chris was also honored on the 3rd Team All-State Detroit Free Press Team, and also 1st Team Blossomland All-Conference Team. Teammates Dave Arter, Gary Gardner and Dave Radtke were named to the Blossomland All-Conference Honorable mention. Our success was predicated on hard work sessions all summer and outstanding team work throughout the season, said Coach Olin. I had a tremendous bunch of enthusiastic guys this year. SPANISH CLUB This year the Spanish Club was under the direc- tion of a new advisor, Mr. Ben Inquilla. The Span- ish Club took part in a large number of activities. Most of these activities were money making pro- jects to help the Club finance its one-week trip to Mexico during spring vacation. Twenty-four stu- dents and three chaperones participated in this trip. Other activities of the club included a caramel apple sale, a bake sale at Goldblatts, a Spanish fiesta open to the public, and a tea with die Ger- man Club. The Spanish Club also participated in a Spanish contest, with other neighboring schools, at Andrews University. DER DEUTSCHVEREIN The German Club began an interesting year with singing Christmas carols at a rest home in Bridgman and ended with a bake sale. During the year, we celebrated Fasching with the German Clubs of River Valley and Berrien Springs, who hosted the party. The German Club hosted a brunch, at which the Spanish Club were guests. Other activities held by the German Club were a German Potato Pancake Supper and a German Dinner. GERMAN CLUB BOTTOM ROW; L-R; R. Gench, B. Benson, C. Neuman, M. Deckert, J. Nye, M. Nye, Mr. Adams. Last summer two members attended the International Convention in Cleveland and in the spring, seven members went to Traverse City for the District Convention. The annual Slave Day was again held as was the Key Club-Faculty Basketball Game with help from the L Club. The Peanut sale was revived and the Key Club helped Kiwanis with their Pancake Day, besides taking over a Kiwanis meeting. The traditional Christmas Tree Pickup was again a success as was a car wash from which all proceeds were donated to the Berrien Drug Treatment Clinic. At the Annual Banquet, the Bryan Steuer Memorial Scholarship was also given. L CLUB The L Club, consisting only of the deserving young men of the High School, continues to be known as a club of respect throughout the school. During the past school year, the Club co-hosted the Key Club-Faculty Basketball game, and held a Car-Wash at the High School. They used the money earned from these to put on a picnic at Mike Zinkils house at the end of the year. GIRL'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The Girl's Athletic Association has had a busy year, with activities to suit almost everyone's taste. We started the year with a successful get acquainted picnic for all old and new members. Then as basketball season came into a full swing, some of the members of GAA joined the Girl's Basketball Team. We polished up our playing in practice sessions and then met three challengers, Galien, Bridgman, and Trinity, St. Joe. SCHOOL NEWSPAPER The 1970-71 Newspaper Staff this year was headed by Tom Morgan with Mrs. Gruss as a staff advisor. One newspaper convention was attended by the group, held in Detroit in the early fall. This convention pre- sented what others were doing in the field of journalism and gave a few helpful hints on how to freshen up your writing. Through the front page articles, editorials, and The Ghost adventures, the newspaper staff had let stu- dents know, at least a little bit, of what is going on at Lakeshore. They hope to be journeying and journaling even more in the future. NEWSPAPER EDITORS BOTTOM ROW; L-R; B. Hunter, T. Morgan, S. Schmoeller. TOP ROW; E. Beutter, Mrs. Gruss, T. Fara. Performing for 7 of die 8 home basketball games, the Lancerettes treated their audience to three spirited numbers per night. The choreography, done by the girls themselves, served as proof of the combined efforts put forth by the group to make the first Pom Pom squad established in Lakeshore a success. 87 DRAMA CLUB OFFICERS STANDING L-R; D. They were called on many times at the last minute to per- form, and did a very fine job as cheerleaders when they were needed. Smitty and Barbie The Junior Varsity also got the support of a fine group of cheerleaders. These girls helped the Varsity cheerleaders to sell ribbons, lead pep as- semblies, and many other jobs which were the duty of the cheerleaders. TOP TO BOTTOM; P. Borgerson, K.
