Text from Pages 1 - 178 of the 1964 volume:

This page is given in memoriam to Mrs. Faye Klackle who has served on the board of education for four years, and has been an asset to our school as well as our com- munity. Everybody who knew her will never forget what a wonderful and pleasant person she was. Our deepest appreciation goes out to her for all that she has done to make our school the school it is today. r 1964 DRIFTWOOD Advisors Mrs. Wyse Miss McGeath Editor-in-Chief Sue Westhauser Assistant Editor Carole Merrill Photo Co-Ordinator Jamie Walton Business Manager Darlene Essig Layout Editor Gretchen Meyerink Assistant Layout Barb Holben Copy Chief Ruth Rutz Activities Editor Judy Bryant Assistant Activities Jerry Page-wood Sports Editor _____________ Russ Bergemann Assistant Sports _____________ Dave Bartz Art Editor _________ Bill Ceseroni Photographer Allan Reimers Advertising Manager __________ Cheryl Beran Assistant Advertising --------- Chris Sizer Production Manager Donna Schoenfelder Sales and Distribution Sue Janca I L A K E S H O R E ----------1'' ..- High School Mr. Guse is this choice for the annual's dedication. We have chosen him because we feel that he has remained faithful to our school through- out the history of Lakeshore and has led our school in its spirit of whole- someness and education. School would not be the same without his beaming smile and booming voice. Coach Guse graduated from Benton Harbor High School and from Western Michigan University. He started coaching in 1940 at New Troy and Buchannan and then served 4 years in the Army Signal Corps. While in the army, he traveled through England, France, Luxembourg and Germany. After being discharged from the army, he renewed his coaching career at New Troy and then came to Lakeshore in 1957. Coach Guse's comments on Lakeshore are that he hopes our students will retain their high ideals and standards, because a large percentage of our graduates will remain in this area and be the leaders of tomorrow. 4 That's all right, it'll heal. 5 A sociable fella. His unique style and personality have made him popular with the students in the short year he's been here. Both of these pictures sym- bolize the communication a principal must have for good administration. The micro- phone symbolizes student- teacher communications, and the telephone symbolizes par- ent-school relationships. 8 Mr. Olmstead is new at the job of superintendent this year, having been moved up from the position of principal at Lakeshore High School last year. Mr. Olmstead attended college at Michigan Tech, and Northern Michigan College. He states that he likes to remember his coaching days and college days in general. Mr. Olmstead's guiding hand has meant a lot to the senior class of this year and we're sure to appreciate it as we go out on our own. 9 Males the same The Bull roars Ohm are you directing Miss Watts? Mr. Langbein is married and has two children. We all have enjoyed Mr. Langbein stay- ing with us this year and hope he has enjoyed us half as much. 20 Rainer Juchheim, our ex- change student this year, is from Dortmund, Germany. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Werner Juchheim but while he is in the United States his host family is the Gene Hogansons. Rainer, a senior, is also in his 12th year of school in Germany. While he may miss the little squabbles of his 1 brother and 2 sisters I'm sure Mike and Terry make up for it. We were very pleased to have Rainer stay with us this year and I hope he sincerely enjoyed his visit. L. to r.: The Dog, Mike, Mr. Hoganson, Rainer, Terry, Mrs. Hoganson. Full-fledged American Boy! A Happy Two-some!?! 22 Education 23 When asked what he wanted said about him in the yearbook Mr. Lambert replied, I came, I saw, I was conquered. Actually he helped others conquer their problems even though this great task seems un- conquerable at times. Students are also helped in planning their future edu- cations and in solving school problems by our excellent assistant counselor, Mr. Ap- plebaum. 24 Mr. Roger Petrie is the smiling business manager who tries to keep our school system's books in the black. Caroline White is Mr. Petrie's assistant. All of the things she does help to keep the business office running smoothly and ef- ficiently. 25 Cooks and Mrs. Nye, chief dietician, leads her staff in another day's food preparation. 28 To our custodians (better known as George, Rich, Herb and George) goes the credit for our neat, well-kept school and grounds. They are here to open the school in the morning and to close it up in the evening — all clean and ready for the next day's work. Many, many thanks to them for the unquestioning (?) assist- ance while we decorate for dances and the many other things that they do for us. Custodians 29 iNaanis The band prepares fcr one of its grand entrances at the beginning of a halftime show and then takes a final bow for another great show. They march for more than football games, the biggest march being the Blossom Parade. If anyone likes to take concentrated fifty mile hikes, then one should join the marching band. 32 They are no Picassos but they can twirl a baton even if it means a black eye for Drum Majorette Ruth Rutz. The Majorettes do a big job for the band as its spice for shows and parades. Head majorette Jacky Arndt leads her majorettes through a gay romp on their horses dur- ing one of the halftime shows. The majorettes are Jacky Arndt, Dawn Zeiger, Nancy Sumner, Mary Sue Bender, Nancy Hen- drix, and Sherri Shinske. 33 Driftwood Staff Left—The annual staff it shown in a rare moment of levity—and, naturally, feeding their faces. Below—This picture shows the annual staff in its usual pose, working hard to give the school the best possible yearbook. Right—This year, the annual, besides the yearbook and ad sales, has earned money in a new way by sponsoring a Hootenanny. 36 Drifter Staff Lakeshore's Drifter staff has done a fine job this year; adding many new sections to their paper. Among the featured attractions were real live actual pictures. The brains of The Drifter (editors), spend many long hours at work. 37 Future Farmers of America There are many Hard-working clubs at Lakeshore and one of the hardest working is the Future Farmers of America. It is not unusual to hear the morning announcements filled with news of F.F.A. projects and work teams. Selling Christmas trees was one of the F.F.A.'s projects, but they have done much more, and won many prizes. 38 Future Secretaries Club Future Secretaries Club members learn by doing work they will be doing in the future. They also learn from the experi- ences of others through the club's many outside speakers and activities. 39 Secretarial Club The Secretarial Club members are the girls we see bounding around the halls collecting attendance slips and doing other important jobs for the teachers. They save teachers a lot of work and gain much exper- ience by doing so. 40 Future Medies Club As we can see here, the Future Medics is one of the school's largest clubs. Although future nurses seem to out- number future doctors, the club holds interest for all. 'Service is what she sells' although from the Future Medics service is free and their password. 41 Science Club Science Club members are all aproned and ready for work on their next project. Maybe they will invent their own rocket. 42 Industrial Arts Club WHAP BANG Bzzzz is the special language of Industrial Arts members. Most members are veterans of our in- dustrial arts course at school, though members occasionally complain of a hammered thumb. 43 Future Homemakers of America Believe it or not—these mem- bers of the Future Homemakers club are watching a hair dem- onstration. In this picture, the Future Homemakers show one way they learn dress habits—with models. However the models don't usually stand as still as this one. 44 The officers of the Future Homemakers lead the club on one of its many and varied field trips. The German Club has been very active this year, due to the fact that we have both a German exchange student and a German exchange teacher. All members of the club have had at least one year of German and only German is spoken at the meetings. On® of th« favorite activities of the German club is viewing pictures of Ger- many, which are both educational and enjoyable. 45 Student Council Our school's governing body, the Student Council, has grown this year to accommodate for the growth in classes. They do a great many services for the students. A private joke among Council members is that of a new name for the Council; the Stockman Student Council, (note that there are three Stockmans, Dave, Linda, and Steve on the Council). 46 Girls' Athletic Association These pictures show an unusual pose for the members of the Girls' Athletic Asso- ciation. Usually they are seen bouncing around the gym playing basketball, volleyball and other sports. The purpose of the G.A.A. is to promote good health and fun for girls at Lakeshore. 47 Letterman’s Club These Varsity athletes make up the Lettermen's Club membership. The pur- pose of the club is to promote athletics in our school. One of the club's projects this year was to sell Lakeshore mega- phones and sweatshirts. Gee, I want one too.4 48 National Honor Society Citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and service are the four qualifications these students met when chosen for National Honor Society membership. They are proud of this honor, naturally, and can often be seen wearing their emblem. 49 Future Teachers Club Some students might be inclined to label the FTA the Future Slave Drivers. But the club members' future occupation is truly a worthy one. One of the club's projects was its Fish Pond at the Winter Carnival. Here we see a young- ster gaily fishing for goodies. Key Club Lakeshore's best dressed men can be found at the Key Club is also one of the hardest working clubs in Key Club meetings, our school. The When the Key Club goes to work on one of its many community and school service projects, they no longer look like the most eligible bachelors, but they begin to look like the hard workers they really are. 51 Debate Club Keen minds, quick wits, public speaking ability and much work go into debate. These debaters are profi- cient in all of these. 52 Organizational Directory BAND President—Jerry Catania Vice President—Donna Schoenfelder Secretary and Treasurer—Sue Westhauser Advisor—Mr. Lesser DRIFTER Editor-in-chief—Gary Eisner News editor—Jennifer Sizer Sports editor—Chuck Messal Society editor—Linda Deetjen Miscellaneous—Joan Garland Advisor—Mr. Applebaum FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA President— Leroy Totzke Vice President—Bruce Baron Secretary—Dale Nye Treasurer— Ron Nitz Reporter—Albert Barbott Sentinel— Terry Kriel Advisor—Mr. Wilson FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA President— Pat Bradley Vice President—Barbara Schadler Secretary— Pam Cupp Treasurer—Alice Perigen Advisors—Mrs. Merrill and Mrs. McCraith FUTURE MEDICS CLUB President—Diane Myers Vice President— Darlene Essig Secretary—Veronica Letrich Treasurer—Joanne Bobinski Advisors—Mrs. Stover and Mr. Groner FUTURE SECRETARIES OF AMERICA President— Ruth Bender Vice President—Jayme Myers Secretary—Janis Johns Treasurer—Carole Merrill Advisors—Mrs. Hamblen and Mrs. Shane FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA President—Marilyn Andres Vice President— Bill Newmiller Secretary—Jackie Arndt Treasurer—Brenda House Advisor—Mr. Porter GERMAN CLUB President—David Arndt Vice President—Pal Summers Secretary and Treasurer—Jackie Arndt Advisors—Mrs. Miller and Mr. Langbein GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION President—Tina Perron Vice Presidents—Eileen Rick and Pat Swikowski Secretary—Sally Davidson Treasurer— Linda Deetjen Social Chairman—Jamie Walton Historian—Lynn Reifschneider Advisor—Mrs. Jackson INDUSTRIAL ARTS CLUB President—Jack Peapples Vice President—Russ Feltner Secretary—Rick Ott Treasurer—Dick Shaus Advisors—Mr. Silas and Mr. Woodward KEY CLUB President—Dick Shaus Vice President—Larry Stewart Secretary—Steve Jewell Treasurer—Kent Adams Advisor—Mr. Applebaum LETTERMEN'S CLUB President—Charles MacAdam Vice President— Bill Cesaroni Secretary and Treasurer—Pat McCalla Advisor—Mr. Arter NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY President—Charles MacAdam Vice President—Dave Bartz Secretary—Carol Reinhardt Treasurer—Deanna Stream Advisor—Mrs. Dorothy Miller SCIENCE CLUB President— Bill Newmiller Vice President— Ron Both Secretary—Linda Kaseworm Treasurer—Patsy Keltner Advisor—Mr. Bossenbroeck SECRETARIAL CLUB President—Peggy Fowler Vice President—Sally Wilson Secretary and Treasurer—Linda Smikle Advisors—Mrs. Hamblen and Mrs. Shane STUDENT COUNCIL President—Dave Stockman Vice President—Jamie Walton Secretary—Linda Stockman Treasurer—Mary Huebner Advisor—Mr. Fell 53 Seniors win first prize Winter Carnival Second prize, snatched by Sophomores 54 YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU by Moss Hart and George S.
