Lakeshore Girls Prepare to Be Future Homemakers The Lancers of Science Encourage the Development of Scientific Knowledge and Skills Sponsor Mr. Long instructs Club Members Officers are diligently studying science. Left to right: Beverly Benson, John Schultz, Gloria Andrews. Mike Hurd. Members of the Lancers of Science have taken many interesting field trips which showed the value of science in our daily life of practical experiences. These field trips have helped the stu- dents prepare their projects which are required in each science class. Once a month a speaker is present who is experi- enced in some field of sci- ence and who has first hand knowledge of the jobs available to interested stu- dents. Club members learn for fun. Left to right, Ted Sing, David McNees, Mr. Long, Sponsor, Leanna Burandt, Don Page-Wood. 28 Debate Team Learns Through First-Hand Experience These Lakeshore students who represented Lakeshore at its conference debates are, left to right: Leanna Burandt, Sue Westhauser, Beverly Benson, Nancy Barkmeier, and Ranicr Scclig. Debate coach, standing right, is Mrs. Hutson. Lakeshore’s Debate Team, debating the proposition, “Resolved: that the United Nations Should Be Significantly Strengthened,” completed this year’s conference season with 4 wins and 4 losses. In addition to its conference debat- ing, the team debated for several area PTA’s. Lakeshore also acted as hosts to the District Debate Tournaments. A highlight of the year was Lake- shore’s trip to Western Michigan Uni- versity, where they participated in a debate tournament, returning home with a record of four wins and no losses. Other students who did not participate in record school debates, but who worked in other phases of debate, were, left to right: Georgia Mullings, Barbara Holben, Gretchcn Mayerink, Mary Sue Gast, and Dennis Seiton. 29 Our Future Teachers Learn to Teach Others The Future Teachers of America, though it was just organized this year, has done quite a bit in the way of activities. They worked together to make a success of their Fun House at the Lancer Carnival, took a trip to Community College, and were to make another trip to Western. During their meetings they had several movies and lively discussions about the teaching profes- sion. IN APPRECIATION We would like to take this opportunity to thank Caruso Studios for their time and service, Because of their role in the 1961 Driftwood, we have been able to present more of the events of this school year to you. Girls interested in business can be seen working diligently as a part of the Secre- tarial Club. All members are cooperative, honest and willing to work. The club is or- ganized to promote business relations, to ac- quire training in the Secretarial field, and to help the teachers. Every member of the Secretarial Club is assigned to assist a faculty member. Left to right: Judy Yops, Mrs. Hamblen, Sponsor, Janet Connell, and Mellie Sassman. Future White Collar Girls of Lakeshore G.A.A. Is the Passport to Fun In Sports Activities The Drifter Keeps Us Informed The I-akeshore Drifter, our school neswpaper which is published once a month, is the proud product of the “Drifter” staff. These people have strived to make our paper even better by their unusual articles, many photographs, and gathering of ads from local businessmen. The Drifter officers include, left to right: Dick llartz. Editor Judy Yops, Terry Thierbach, Scott Smith. Jerry Pagewood. Mellie Sassman. and Shari Del Mariam. The Annual Staff Prepares This ’61 “DRIFTWOOD” The Driftwood staff has once again put their whole heart into the Lakeshore Annual. Pictorial ads and greater class coverage has made it even better than ever this year. Experience gained by the staff has laid a firm foundation for coming annuals. Annual staff officers begin planning the school yearbook. From left to right are: Sandy Larkin, business manager; Karen Rennhack. art editor: Beverly Benson, Driftwood editor; Keith Tollas, ad ertising manager; Mr. Hitchcock, advisor; Terry Thierbach, assistant editor. The Lakeshore High School “L” club was formed by athletes, that have earned a varsity letter in any sport, and the coaches for the respective sports. The aims of this organiza- tion are: to promote sportsmanship- like conduct, to promote interest in athletics, and to maintain higher scholastic standards. The officers are Richard Bartz, President; Daniel Schultz, Vice-President; Martin Tretheway, Secretary-Treasurer; and Mr. Glen Arter, Sponsor. The coaches of the Lakeshore High School have led our teams to become one of the most respected teams in Southwest- ern Michigan. We appreciate the time and effort these coaches have put into the training of the young men and the ad- vancement of sports at Lakeshore. Art Guse, Athletic Director; John Woods, Reserve Basketball Coach; Glen Arter, Football Coach; Charles Reed, Re- serve Football Coach; Robin Campbell, Line Coach. (Not available for picture.) Hear ye! Hear ye! Denny runs into the end zone to score. Look out, Denny! What do you see, a fire? Football was king in every sense of the word this year at Lakeshore as the Lancer football squad compiled its finest record in the short history of our school. I ed by an experienced group of senior linemen, the powerful Lancer team held its first four op- ponents (New Troy, Galien, Bridgman, and Ed- wardsburgl scoreless. Three Oaks finally broke the perfect record by scoring twelve points, but lakeshore rallied in the fourth quarter to win 27- 12. The following week the Lancers wrapped up the Big Eight Conference title by defeating a de- fending champion. New Buffalo, 20-7. The Lancers turned in their fifth shut-out against Eau Claire 11-0 to finish the conference schedule undefeated and untied. A 33-0 loss in the final game was a tremendous blot on what could have been a perfect record, but that loss, we hope, will give future Lancer football teams enough incentive to improve upon that 7-1 record which was established this year. Denny Arend, a valuable Senior player, gave support to the team and helped them to gain the Conference championship. 43 J.V. FOOTBALL The Lakeshore J.V. Football season was con- sidered successtul although it was not a winning season. They played some very good teams, such as Brandywine and Buchanan. The team, coached by Coach Reed, won 2 and lost 4 games. The pros- pects for Lakeshore’s future varsity look bright because the team was a very young team, composed mostly of Freshmen. Our Freshman Team Lakeshore’s Freshman basketball team finished its season with a 4-6 record. They lost to Bridgman 44-38 and 42-38. to Berrien Springs 45-31 and 48-44, to Bard 43-39, and to Niles 34-32. They defeated Benton Harbor 30-24, Fairplain 29-21, New Troy 57- 53, and Brandywine 39-38. Although they suffered a losing season, the scrappy little Lancers played hard and gave our future varsity teams something to look forward to. 45 Our Junior Varsity Team The Lancer JV s ended their season with a 9-5 conference record and a 9-7 overall record. They defeated Three Oaks 57-41. 55-31. Edwardsburv 57-32. 60-45, and New Buffalo 61-36, 54-4-1. Three other teams also met defeat to the Uncers, New Troy 58-50. Galien 18-47. and Eau Claire 56-41. They were beaten by five teams, losing two to St. Joseph 47-43, 57-35, and two to Brightman 55-42, 52-12. They lost their opening game of the season 37-32 to Galien. and then lost close games to Eau Claire 40-34 and to New Troy 49-48. Kay Rennhack, Carol Madej, Diane Myers, Betsy Mallctt. Whut’s up there? This is no time for holding hands! Jump, boy, jump! Up and in. I’ll take my time. Block that kick! Our Varsity Team The Lakeshore Lancers closed their regular basketball season with a 6-10 record and a tie for fifth place in the conference standings. I-akeshores first game was a close 57-55 win over Galien. while their second game was a close 68-65 loss to Three Oaks. The Lancers lost to New Troy 63-52 and to the St. Joe Bears 68-16 before they won their second game. 67-58 against Edwardsburg. A rally by Eau Claire in the last quarter defeated the Lancers 54-47 for their 4th loss. Lakeshore then downed New Buffalo 51-39, hut lost to Bridgman 61-54. hut was again beaten by Three Oaks 58-45. The unpredictable Lancers avenged their first loss to New I roy by defeating them 51-43 and in their next game, the scrappy Lancers rallied in the second half to overcome a blazing first half spree by the Edwardsburg Eddies to beat them 68-62. Lakeshore was defeated by Eau Claire 57-49, New Buffalo 55-45, St. Joe 63-40, and Bridgman 58-44 to close out their 1960-1961 schedule. The Lancers were eliminated from the district tournaments when they were defeated by New Troy 67-48 in the first game. The Lancer team lacked the experience that it had had in its previous seasons, but, regardless of its experience, the Lancers always played hard and put forth their best efforts and they always maintained their sportsmanlike conduct and competitive spirit throughout each game. 49 Ted Sinf Terry' Koebel 51 Coreen Rennhack.
