The Driftwood Lakeshore High School Stevensville, Michigan Ann Stedman, Editor Donna Jefferis, Business Manager I960 DEDICATION We, the Staff, feel that it is only right to dedicate this, the 1960 DRIFTWOOD, to you, the Lakeshore parents, for without you our beautiful school would not have been possible. Your care for us and our welfare made you sacrifice to offer an opportunity for us to learn and to prepare ourselves for the future. Because of you, we are now in a new building and because of your sacrifices we have a better chance for success. In deepest appreciation for all that you have done, we dedicate this book to you, our parents. 2 administration FACULTY Oua . . . MR. BARTZ, MR. NITZ, MR. BINDA, MR. NYE, MR. SMALL . . . Each had previously picked its candidate for homecoming queen. The class queens were Senior Ellen Nedoba, Junior Carol Dent, Sophomore Coreen Rennhack, and Freshman Jane Damaske. Votes were sold by the Student Council, and the proceeds financed the Homecoming Dance held after the game in which Lake- shore played New Buffalo. At the half-time of this game. Student Council Vice-President Kenneth Schultz crowned Senior Ellen Nedoba as Lakeshore's first Homecoming Queen. CAN YOU IMAGINE? Lakeshore had a good 13-5 season, defeating Bridgman 60 to 46 and 63 to 41, Galien 57 to 40 and 50 to 44, Edwardsburg 74 to 57 and 80 to 63, Eau Claire 61 to 41 and 59 to 43, and New Buffalo 54 to 52 and 73 to 65. The Lancers split with Three Oaks, the Big 8 Conference Champion, losing an early season game by one point, 46 to 45. This defeat was avenged later in the season with a 68 to 47 trouncing of the Oakers. A loss to New Troy 50 to 44 late in the season, after an earlier 72 to 41 win, resulted in a second place finish in the conference, one game behind the champions. The Lancers only loss in the new gym was in the first home game with St. Joseph by a 56 to 46 score. Later, the highly ranked Class A team barely squeaked by Lakeshore with a rally in the last two minutes to win 57 to 53. In the district tournament at Benton Harbor, Lakeshore won easily over Hartford, 53 to 34, but lost to the district champion Bangor 59 to 47. 54 Grab the ball, Bob Two more, Art t(V uicfottj The Oakers get a rebound The Oakers score Ik M SfWs, UtdWutg batebcM. . . The most exciting thing that happened this year was the purchasing of new gray uniforms with red and white trim and red shields. Drum Major Pat Plumley led majorettes; Carol Dent, Dona Jefferis, Bonnie Risch, Eloise Herzog, Mary Sue Gast, and Sue Walton in entertaining new routines as the marching band played for our home football games. 66 WOODWINDS The band participated in several Concerts. We saw our band play for the Lakeshore Open House, and we are proud to be able to be credited with this high school band and all of its members. Our band received a 1st Division in the district band contest at Three Oaks on February 27. 67 CHOIR The school choir, under the direction of Mr. Lesser, has brightened the lives of the student body. Besides hearing their melodic strains echoing through the halls of LHS during 2nd hour each morning, they have also made Lake- shore proud through their outstanding performances in the concerts that they have given. They have sung at the Thanksgiving and Christmas assem- blies, and at P. T. S. A. They are working toward the purchase of new robes. 68 JUNIORS: Jim Dent, Vice-President; Mrs. Hamblen, Advisor; Dick Bartz, President; Clem Cesaroni. Measurer; Beverly Benson, Secretary. OFFICERS 0 The Drifter staff has made history at LHS by publishing the first printed issues. Lakeshore is the only school in the area except for the Twin Cities which has a printed paper. Its new features in- clude photographs and ads. o The Clara L. Meyers chapter of the National Honor Society consists of high school students who excel in scholarship, leadership, character, and school service. School Spirit was pro- moted through the sale of pom-poms and pins and the proceeds used for a scholarship. Representatives of each class form the Student Council, which promotes the efficiency of all school activities through a unification of control in Lakeshore High School . This year, the Student Council has sponsored assemblies and dances, helped in organizing the Winter Carnival, sponsored Slop Day, Dress-up Day, election week. Senior week, the Christmas Post Office, and organized the L.H.S. Handbook. 72 DEBATE TEAM The debate team has participated in conference debates this past season where they have argued for and against the proposition RESOLVED: That the Federal Government Should Substantially Increase Its Regulation of Labor Unions. The District Debate Tournaments were held at Lakeshore where the LHS team lost to the district champions. Varsity Debaters are: Ken Schultz, Beverly Benson, Dave Risch, and Nancy Barkmeirer. The members of the Secretarial Club acquire training in the secretarial field by helping the teachers at LHS. They do such work as typing, checking papers, filing, duplicating, stenographic work, and acting as receptionists. 73 The interests and knowledge of the Lancers of Science have been expanded by the discussions of visiting speakers in such fields as medicine, conservation, and plastics. The club is affiliated with the Science Clubs of America and the Junior Engineering Technical Society. We wish to take this opportunity to thank CARUSO'S STUDIO for the front cover photo. His excellent work in capturing the lives of Lakeshore students for the 1960 DRIFTWOOD has helped to make this book one which will give many hours of pleasure to us in future years. 74 LETTERMEN'S CLUB The purpose of the Lettermen's club is to promote sportsmanship at LHS. Throughout the past year the club has sponsored Dad's Night at the Eau Claire Football game, and sponsored faculty basketball games. They have attended different sporting events, including an MSU football game. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The Lakeshore Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America received their charter from the Michigan Association on February 17. 75 SENIOR’S ACTIVITIES ALTEN.
