1983 Afro-American Princess By Sudi Roberts Y After several days of deliberation, the ballots were tallied and Gail Alex- ander emerged as Lakes High School's 1982-83 Afro- American princess. Gail, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Alexander, was a member of her church youth group and Afro-American Club. She also performed with Studio Choir and has par- ticipated in the Tacoma Youth Symphony. Concerning her future, Gail said that she planned to attend the University of Washington and major in business. A career in business manage- ment was her goal. The faculty nominated nine girls as likely candidates for princess. The Afro-American Club then voted and made the final decision. The other nominees were Sonya Cook, Donna Daniels, Delphi Fowler, Gail Harrell, Patty Hunter, Vaughnetta jenkins, Lydia Reeves and Eleanor Thomas. I'm still in a daze, said Gail. I'm nervous because it's a big responsibility. I just don't want to let anyone down. In order to compete in the pageant, each contestant was required to be a high school senior, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, prepare and deliver a speech on the pageant thme, Save the Children and make a talent presen ta tion. The Afro-Queen was later to be selected on the basis of ap- pearance, poise, personality, speaking ability and talent presentation. A panel of judges made up of seven per- sons knowledgeable in black history and the fine arts would make the selection. Y . 1 The winner of the pagear would then receive a S106 scholarship. During her reigi the queen would atten various community functior and promote the Afro American Club. Gail said sh felt that the club was very in portant. The purpose of tl club is to learn more abou black culture. It also serves a develop black education i society, she said. With only one month le until the Afro-Pageant, whic was held on Mar. 26, Gail ha many activities to attend. H preparation included audl tions, dance rehearsals, class on personal development ar a photo session. The first of a multitude functions was an orientatio. reception given to host t contestants, the parents al the judges, and to explain tl Afro-Pageant program.
