Many men and women then left the comforts of their secular lives to live as hermits, until St. An- thony congregated them together into small communes,- the monastic system of the Roman Catholic Church was born. The monastic system went through many changes. The monks progressively did more and more together. At first they had only worked together, but by the time St. Basil took the monastic system to Greece, the monks worked in the same fields, ate in the same rooms and slept in the same buildings. St Benedict of N ursia made even more changes. He had the monastery take the place of the family for the monks. Though celibacy had always been a part of monasticism, Benedict established the Benedictine rule which called for celibacy, poverty, and obedience. The monks lived a life of simplicity and diligence. Though they did preserve much of the culture and arts of the middle- ages, their original purpose must be kept in mind.
