146 I nobleman, Valere, who was alienated from his family. Valere took a position as ttTHE MISERii iiThe Miser? Lakesi Spring Play, was a comedy of frustrated love and financial obsession. Harpagon, the miser, was a widower who unanwingly was in love with his sonis sweetheart. His daughter, Elise, was in love with a a servant in Harpagods household in order to be near Elise. As the plot developed, the miseris money was stolen, new people were added to the already complicated intrigues, and the audience was led through mistaken identities and false accusations to a sentimental and emotional resolution. Valere was forgiven by his father, the young lovers werejoined in marriage, and Harpagon was re-united with his beloved money, which, after all, was better than getting married! Costuming was elaborate and reflected, as did the set, the period of the middle 1600s in Paris. The set and props were constructed and collected by numerous student committees.
