SEASON The Varsity Swim Team had an unusual year. Although every record but one was broken, the team had to settle for seventh place in the State Swimming Meet, two places lower than last year. Under the leadership of Coach Mike Stauffer and Captain Rob Coleman, the swimmers finished with a record of 13 wins and 6 losses. Seniors John Hartman, Jim Julich, Dale Tomasch, and Rob Coleman concluded their third year of swimming for Lakes. Through the fine coaching of Mr. Stauffer, these boys were able to attain top spots in the State Championships. The 400 yard Free Style Relay team, consisting of Frank Burton, Terry Julich, John Hartman, and Dale Tomasch set a new state record of 3:269, breaking the old record of 3:27.8, but was only able to take 4th place in the competition. Dale TomaSCh, 50 yard Free Styler, retained last yearis second place finish with a time of 22.5 seconds. In capturing second place in the state, Tomasch placed higher than any swimmer in the history of the school. Captain Rob Coleman,s hopes for the State Championships were nearly eliminated when he contracted mononucleosis two weeks before the important meet with Clover Park. Coleman, who meant the difference of ten points, was unable to swim in the last four meets. Rob began retraining only 4 days prior to the State Meet and was able to place 8th in the 100 yard Butterfly. john Hartman concluded his third year for Lakes with an 11th . place finish in the 100 yard Back-stroke: Breast-stroker Jim julich, also a graduating Senior, swan well for three years, but was unable to obtain state qualifying timethis year. The prospects for next year are promising with such outstandingjunior and sophomore swimmers as Frank Burton and Terry Julich in the Free Style, Kevin Kernen and Brad Jones swimming the Butterfly, Larry Gottas and Steve Anderson in the Breast-stroke. These Lancers had excellent times this year and show great potential for a successful 1970-71 season. Second place finisher 1n state competition, Dale Tomasch, is pictured with the top six 50 yard free stylers.
