STRIKE FORCE '81 Goes To State ‘Strike Force '81' was similiar to most Pacer teams of the past. The torrid offensive unit led by All-State players Todd Anderson (QB) and Thane Cleland (SE) as well as offensive guard Regan Hyde were capable of rolling up big scores and helped prove this to be the most outstanding offense ever for Lakeridge. Defense was also a Pacer strongpoint with the outstanding linebacking of David Monnie, Chris Myers, Chris Coalson, and Brian Cole. In the first game of the season, the Pacers blasted Beaverton; the defending state champions. 40-17. The win put the Pacers in the number one ranking throughout most of the season. The Pacer gridders outscored their first six opponents 235-40, shutting out perennial power Hillsboro and league contenders Glencoe, Newberg. Tigard, and Dallas. The Forest Grove Vikings who were able to slow down Lakeridge's potent run-and-shoot offense, resulted in a disappointing 21-18 loss for the No. 1 Pacers. But, the Blue and Gold gridders recovered by executing McMinnville and romping Lake Oswego. In first-round, state playoff action, the Pacers came out the victor with a 20-17 win over Sheldon at Autzen Stadium. The second-round of the state playoffs proved not to be so lucky for the Pacer grid squad; who suffered a frustrating defeat to the R« eburg Indians. I'm proud of my kids. They battled. Nobody can say we got outhit or outplayed, we just got out-fated, said Coach Tom Smythe. 1981 VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM COACHING STAFF Ed McQuory. Tom Smythe. Jerry Grosser , Joy Locey. Jeff Erdman.
