The torrid offensive unit led by All-State players Todd Anderson (QB) and Thane Cleland (SE) as well as offensive guard Regan Hyde were capable of rolling up big scores and helped prove this to be the most outstanding offense ever for Lakeridge. Defense was also a Pacer strongpoint with the outstanding linebacking of David Monnie, Chris Myers, Chris Coalson, and Brian Cole. In the first game of the season, the Pacers blasted Beaverton; the defending state champions. 40-17. The win put the Pacers in the number one ranking throughout most of the season. The Pacer gridders outscored their first six opponents 235-40, shutting out perennial power Hillsboro and league contenders Glencoe, Newberg. Tigard, and Dallas. The Forest Grove Vikings who were able to slow down Lakeridge's potent run-and-shoot offense, resulted in a disappointing 21-18 loss for the No. 1 Pacers. But, the Blue and Gold gridders recovered by executing McMinnville and romping Lake Oswego. In first-round, state playoff action, the Pacers came out the victor with a 20-17 win over Sheldon at Autzen Stadium. The second-round of the state playoffs proved not to be so lucky for the Pacer grid squad; who suffered a frustrating defeat to the R« eburg Indians. I'm proud of my kids. They battled. Nobody can say we got outhit or outplayed, we just got out-fated, said Coach Tom Smythe. 1981 VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM COACHING STAFF Ed McQuory. Tom Smythe. Jerry Grosser , Joy Locey. Jeff Erdman. The regular season was one of success and injuries. Within the first five games the team was hit by a plague in injuries that sidelined a majority of the senior members. These problems went to the advantage of the team when it was discovered that the people off fhe bench were equally as strong as the people out with injuries. This was proven through such crushing defeats as: LHS vs. Canby where the score was eight to one and LHS vs. Estacada where the Pacers buried them in the turf with a score of ten to one. For the whole season, the varsity blasted its opponents sixty-three to six. After winning the Willamette Valley League crown, the Pacers were “rigged and ready for state. In the opening game against Gladstone at Civic Stadium, the varsity won four to nil. Kent Jensen racked up a hat-trick (three goals) to bring his season total to an outstanding twenty-nine. Rich Ramakers earned the other goal by exploding a shot from the top of the box putting it through a mass of defenders and into the back of the net. In the following quarter final game to the shock of the players and fans, the Pacers were beat one to nil. This concluded a season that started a number six rating in the team polls and moved up to number one. 16 SOCCER 1 Wayne Tonning breaks away with the ball after burning a Glencoe striker 2 Brian Brennt turns to bring a lose ball into control 3 Randy Hamar receives a through ban to break down the wing 4 Kent Jensen controls the ban on his outstep and prepares to add to his many goals % o u Scores OPPONENT LHS Rex Putnam 0 4 Sandy 1 4 Canby 1 8 Estacada 0 10 Newberg 0 3 MolaUa 1 10 Forest Grove 1 7 Oregon City 0 4 Tigard 0 1 Lake Oswego 0 1 Glencoe 0 3 West Linn 1 4 State Playoffs Gladstone 0 4 Centennial 1 0 Total 6 63 18 SOCCER BACK ROW Wayne Tonning, Rick Meyers. Under coach Jim Jamieson, the girls J.V. soccer team accumulated a superior record of 6 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. The defense led by Jamie Writer at goalie, proved to be the difference in many games. This past year, the Frosh soccer team, with the help of Coach Willy Brennt, had an excellent season with a 7 and 4 record. This gave a fantastic outlook for the varsity team. 20 SOCCER GtRLS J. The other infielders included catcher Laura Garvey, 2nd baseman Julie Britsch, and shortstop Maria Stevens. The outfield positions were played by Lynda Pitts, Heather Myhr, and Jamie Hicks. Vicky Paulk GROWING OLD The old woman sits in her chair, her memories clutched in one hand, a beated cross in the other. Tired and lonely, she rocks to and fro, the creaking of the chair synchronizing with the thudding of her aging bones, and the movement of her body, slow and steady, like the pumping of her heart. While her mind wanders, the room dims, and she sees a little girl clad in the garments of childhood- ruffles, ribbons, bobby socks and shiny patent leather shoes- sitting with her best friend , painting each others faces with lipstick, striving for the grown-up look mommy always wears. A bubbly burst of laughter escapes their mouths, and a rush of good feeling comes over the old woman as she remembers the carefree days of make- believe she frolicked in when she was a little girl. She glances in the mirror but looks quickly away, not especially pleased with the image looking honestly back at her. Though she tries, she invaribly looks again into the mirror, but this time she sees the glowing face of an adolescent brushing her flaxen hair with an ivory comb. This leads her to memories of the fun of slumber parties with girlfriends, the excitement of being courted, and the silent joy of her first kiss, that day beneath the maple tree as the rain poured and quenched the earths thirst. Feeling a tear run its course down her face, the old woman flicks it away. She feels the rough dryness of her wrinkled skin, and comes back to the reality of her beaten cross and weathered rocking chair. She closes her eyes and rests her aching body, sighing I'm tired. In the distance she hears soft music and a voice tells her to sleep. Slowly she relaxes, and it seems her body has been released of a heavy burden. The music becomes a bit more intense, and a smile creeps up. It takes over her wrinkled face as she tightens her hold on the beaten cross, sighs once more, and goes to sleep. Creatures peek peevishly for a safe path to venture out and explore your wonders The birds burst into song, rejoicing and calling Oh hurry day! There is so much to be done! Hydi Lyn Kotila 104 PARK BENCH A Joyful Message The rich, red- orange sun rose slowly over the green grassy ocean, spreading the light across the waking paradise. Awaiting the suns joyful message, dew clung to the neatly trimed grass. Yet without human attention, the surrounding foliage remained in a perfectly groomed state. The bright lime plants spread joy and life all around the island. Crysyalline water cascaded over the smooth, brown, rocks. Birds sang chorally, awakening the lazy orange and yellow flowers from their beauty rest. The island never rushed its daily processes, always serene and subdued. The early morning dew dried with the rays of the sun, proclaiming a new day for the tranquil island. Joyful from spreading the news of its beauty and love, the island felt thankful for its opportunity to tell its message. Matt Jefferson PARK BENCH 105 I do not dislike you- I have no right to. The week of October 19-24 began with the princess assembly on Monday. The eight princesses chosen were Joel Bradshaw, Stephanie Moulton, Tamiko Monroe, Jennifer Ahlquist, Becca Grant, Shelley McElroy, Janet Sanders, and Renny Woolcott. Throughout the week, various air- bands had a chance to show their stuff in the north commons and the winner got to play at the queen assembly on Friday. The week was filled with such events as a car bash, class dressed up days, and a big mac eating contest. On Friday, senior Janet Sanders was crowned Lakeridge Homecoming Queen. That evening the varsity football team crushed visiting McMinnville 35-0. The following evening, the annual dance was held and enjoyed by all those who attended. 1. HOMECOMING 147 AUTUMN DELIGHT Fall Choral Concert One asset Lakeridge High can proudly boast of, is its consistently excellent musical presentations. The 1981 Fall Concert which fell on November 4, continued this fine reputation. The Lakeridge stage band set the fast paced evening with several fine instrumentals includi ng Catallo's Cafe Amore, Spera's Four Wheel Drive, and a superb rendition of the Marvin Hamlisch hit What I Did For Love, which was accompanied by a fine solo sung by Michelle Lunenburg. The Freshman Girls Triple Trio came next with a delightful song and dance act based on the song “When I Meet My Man, What Lakeridge concert would be complete without Company? They combined their rare singing and dancing talents to recreate the Telephone Hour sequence from Bye Bye Birdie. Classical music was then given a shot as the Lakeridge Orchestra played several pieces from such masters as Mozart and Bartok. The latter part of the evening was dedicated to the three Lakeridge choral groups. The Pacer Choir sang several selections from the musical Oliver, the Stage Choir performed Three Mountain Ballads and the Concert Choir ended the gala evening with selections from Down By The Riverside. 1. SIMON'S MELODRAMA Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue was the fall drama production this year, and its' success was outstanding. The plays story revolves around the frustrated life of a forty-seven year old. New York ad man, who suddenly loses his job and is therefore thrust into a life of torturous misery. Sean Knight, who played Mel the play's central character, achieved brilliance as he brought to life one of the most energetic and maniacal characters ever seen on the Lakeridge stage. Mary Ella Ross also kept adrenalin flowing as she used her superb acting talent to create Edna, Mel's understanding wife. Prisoner's supporting cast was also quite up to par. Tod Kelly, who portrayed Mel's eccentric brother Harry, delivered a fine performance. Jennie Norman, Christina Stevens and Lisa Lipson, who played, Mel's three elderly sisters, were also very convincing. 1. Edna (Mary ESO Ross) attempts to calm down hot- headed husband Mel. 2. Mel (Sean Knight) uses Edna as a release for his tensions. 3. Mel's brother Harry (Tod KeHy) visits Mel after his nervous breakdown 4. Mel's sisters (From left to right) Jessie (Christina Stevens). Pauline (Jennie Norman) and Pearl (Lisa Lipson) also come to offer Mel condolences 1 MISTLETOE MAGIC The 1981 Holiday Week was held early this year and it really helped get the Christmas spirit off to a great start. The princesses chosen on Monday were Wendy Baker, Heidi Rhodes, Linda Hale, Karyn May, Susie Reiling, Kathryn Okoneski, Laila Vehvilainen, Susanne O'Brien, and Cathy Bosworth. The week was filled with such events as sled races, talks with Santa, singing telegrams and class dress-up days. The Holiday dance was very well attended and the music, which consisted of anything from jazz, disco, to rock, was really well liked and everybody there danced, (which is unusual). On Friday, the Queens' assembly was held and the student body chose Senior Laila Vehvilainen as their 1981 Lakeridge Holiday Queen. 1. The concert experienced a good deal of audience attendance, as a healthy amount of people gathered to see the gala event. Starting off the evening was the Lakeridge Orchestra, which brilliantly re-created A Fantasy On-Greensleeves. Company then danced their way onto the stage and performed a Christmas medley, including such favorites as Jingle Bells , The First Noel , and What Child Is This. Other highlights of the evening included several Christmas favorites performed by Lakeridge's three choral groups. The Stage Choir, Concert Choir, and Pacer Choir performed such classics as Caroling, Caroling , Ring The Bells , and Away In A Manger . The Freshman Girls Triple Trio made their second appearance on the Lakeridge stage as they sang the beloved Christmas Song. On the six nights that the play was performed healthy crowds assembled to observe the brilliance of the extravaganza. The play once again marked the traditionally successful collaberation of Lakeridge High's three performing groups: Drama, Choir and Orchestra. Mary Ella Ross and Christina Stevens headed off the plays giant cast as Ruth and Eileen Sherwood, the two sisters from Ohio attempting to make a name in the big Apple. Upon their arrival in Greenwich Village they are immediately conned by a fast-talking landlord, played by Sean Knight, to rent out a rundown apartment that was once the dwelling place of a call-girl named Violet (Kristie Hladecek). As the story progresses Ruth and Eileen are bombarded by Violets past clients and are forced to take on the protective services of a washed up ex-football star called the “Wreck (Frank Stratton). Ruth, who aspires to be a great writer soon comes in contact with a young publisher named Bob Baker, played by Boomer Reiff, who is somewhat dumbfounded by Ruth's bizarre style of writing. Soon all chaos erupts when Eileen is mistakenly arrested for rioting and is sent to jail. All is resolved though when Eileen is released from jail and is approached by a local club owner, (Matt Fisher) who offers Eileen a chance to accomplish her life-long ambition, singing for an audience. With the music of Leonard Bernstein and the lyrics of Comden and Green, Wonderful Town provided several memorable songs including It's Love , Swing , Pass the Football , “Conga and The Wrong Note Rag . 1. Not only was the department preoccupied with maintaining its usual degree of quality, but it also took on the burdensome task of producing four full-length plays instead of three. The four productions included: Neil Simon's delightful comedy The Prisoner of Second Avenue, Bell, Book and Candle, A Company of Wayward Sainfs and the musical Wonderful Town. All four plays distinguished themselves in various areas of dramatic excellence. All Drama study courses were instructed by Lakeridge Drama coach Herb Hyde. The courses that were offered included ON STAGE, ACTING WORKSHOP. MODERN THEATRE and CHILDRENS THEATRE. 1.
