THE PARTING At the fork my friend and I had stopped After a bright, light walk through towns. A road to the right ran through a wood And the left road led to the faroff hills. The wood was dense and cool and lovely, And there came music from within: Birds that cried the beauty of their greenland home, Ana oo old brook booonoo somewhere about love. The road leading left climbed up hills And down through rocky, sun-baked land That people left to its own, all alone, To lie untilled. My friend asked which road should we take And I said the left-running road and he disagreed. But why? There's nothing there, said he. There are rocks there and steep hills, I replied. The woods are 'restful dnd shady, he argued. Yes, I admit they induce sleep and hide the sun, I said But the left country is restless and sun-roasted 7 I MM And tough to handle. 0,41 0' 7 . pa . We disagreed and so said goodbye, 0 ' . T ' ' And he went to the right and I to the left, ' And that was the last time.we met. G!! WJ , ROBERT HocHMAN 27
