Miss Jean considered church work for a career and now spends her spare time in reading and stamp collecting. MISS GRACE MURRELL, Area Visiting Teacher, The fine at- tendance record which Lakeland schools have built up is largely due to the efforts of Miss Murrell, ADL -1-.5 3 MRS. IMOGENE McGlLVARY is another newcomer to L,H.S. She can be seen bustling from the intercom to the counter in the main office as she goes about her duties as one of the school secretaries, The school nurse MRS, THYRA KERNS, considers cooking and sewing as her hobbies and spends her outside tirne with church work. A dirty house is Miss Kern's pet peeve and on entering her tirst aid room, you're likely to be asked, What's wrong with you? -her favorite expression. N 51 i You . . . clown! is often heard from MRS. NORMA WAR' REN, problems teacher and guidance director, She is adviser to the Student Council and states her pet peeve as parasitic people. Mrs. Warren has three sons. MR. FLOYD LAY, Area Physical Education Director, is responsi- ble for the success of the physical education program in all Lakeland schools. ,I Y' . X - vi MR. ERIC BERG, band master and chorus director, is only in his second year at L.H.S., but he has already established himself as a fine musician. A person with the lazy that's good enough attitude rates as his pet peeve. He once con- sidered going into the ministry before he chose music for his life work, MRS. MARGARET MARCHANT leads a very busy life super- vising the health and physical welfare of all the students in Lakeland schools. l' J' 1 f.. 1' iff' : fs, '5- rs. Y vzagilf 5 .Art -L I1 , xg I English II and Biole are the courses taught by MRS LUCILE BYRANT A cheerful disposition and a co operative attitude are her requirements for an ideal pupil, Mrs Bryant is sponsor of the Keyettes and spends her outside time reading, garden- ing, and doing church work. Her wedding and a honeymoon in Charleston, S C con' tributed to a most enioyahlc summer for MRS VIRGINIA MAJOR, English instructor Church work plus such hobbies as collecting phonograph records and tlower gardening occupy her leisure time Of course her new husband comes first, 2 I 1 1 ' , I . -rovv-Wy Bad grammar is a logical pet peeve for MISS HAZEI HALEY, English and speech teacher. She sponsors the Senior Class, Quill and Scroll, and Highlander, and is an honorary adviser to the Keyettes. She is active in the Little Theatre, Junior League, and church work. Newspaper work was once considered as a career by MISS VIRGINIA DAVIS teacher of yournalisrn and English II To- cIay's your deadline is definitely paired with Miss Davis as she is the hard-working adviser of the Bagpipe and the Quill and Scroll An interesting summer vacation took Nss Davis through 39 states Mexico, and Canada V is e L NN '33 v c t i X1 , .. sawing. V fir N' ' iff r K 'I MR. JOE CLARK, world geography teacher, has a family of three: his wife, a daughter, and a son, His pet peeve is wasteful people. He enioys his hobbies of photography and reading. Advising the Destroyer cheerleaders, the Y'Teens, and the Youth for Christ Club are important activities of MISS FRAN- CES FURLOW, who teaches English and Latin. Her most em- barrassing moment came when she was introducing a friend to the president of her college and forgot the president's name. Students who keep asking What page? .are her pet peeve. Teachers who are trying to promote themselves with the students and the office, states MISS CATHERINE CRAIG, are my pet peeve. Her Latin classes and the Classical Club take up most of Miss Craig's time, but she always finds time for her hobbies of sewing and needlework. MRS. FRANKIE WORKIZER, Spanish and Latin teacher, sponsors the Pan-American Club. Her most embarrassing moment was when, after suffering repeated shock and battered eardrums, she yelled back at the intercom system and later learned it was a teacher friend's voice she had not recognized. Conceited people are the pet peeve of MISS MAXINE Mc- INTYRE, sponsor of the Keyettes, L Club, and Senior Class. Miss Mac teaches business arithmetic, geometry, and trigo- nometry, and maintains that an ideal pupil is neither a book- worm nor a butterfly, but a wholesome, all-around boy or girl with a sense of humor. Architecture was once considered as a career by MR. ROBERT HOUSER, general math teacher. He is adviser to the Junior Lions Club and states his opinion of an ideal pupil as one with curiosity. His pet peeve is disinterested students. Pg. . Speak now or iorever hold your peace, is typical of MISS RUTH HALL BROWN, teacher of Algebra ll. The Torch Club has her for an adviserva wise choice indeed. Give Miss Brown cockers and flowers and she'll be content, The person who says l can't is MISS MINNIE SKlPPER'S pet peeve. She teaches home economics but once considered being a dietitian. She enioys church work, gardening, and reading. T 'i x X 513' Knock it off, MR. JOHN TEANY, health education teacher, might have said during his most embarrassing moment. Some ioker stole his pants while he was playing in a basketball game with weather five above zero. He is married and has a boy and a girl. Sewing and traveling are MRS. MARTHA ALLEN'S hobbies. She is a home economics teacher and new to the L.H.S. teaching staff this year. A thing of beauty is a ioy forever is her favorite expression and her outside activities are church, theatre, and music. ,u MISS LOUISE WILLIAMS, biology teacher, once considered architecture as a career. She collects antiques, early American furniture, and pressed glass. Miss Williams spends her outside time directing a chorus and sewing., She is also state co- ordinator of the Florida Junior Academy of Sciences. MISS JOANNAH WILLIAMS, chemistry and physics teacher, had her most embarrassing moment when she forgot to go to a dinner given in her honor. She was a medical secretary before she became a science teacher. A phone ringing at 2 A.M. is her pet peeve. .fy A good football player who can pass all his work is COACH NURMl NELSON'S requirement for an ideal pupil. He is L Club adviser and teaches physical science. As head football coach, Nurrni claims his pet peeve is seeing the Dreadnaughts lose a game. ,Q IN How about that? is COACH JOHN STAPLES' favorite expression, His wife and three luscious little girls make up his family. He considered ioining the US. Marines but chose a teaching career in- stead, COACH JIM MlLLER, physical education teacher, naturally rates sports as his hobby. A good garne of golf rates high as MISS MABEL CAPERTON'S favorite pas- time and 'nost definitely her hobby. CLAUDE THOMPSON has finally achieved his ambition-he got a wife. JESSlE MAE CHAMBERS, teacher of commercial courses, says that her pet peeve is girls who cross their knees and swing their foot pendulum fashion. VERNON HALL, teacher of commercial courses, is my pet peeve. He has a wife and enjoys music and sports in his spare time. His few spare moments are spent working in the adult and veteran schools, church work, and Lions Club. His two youngsters demand their share of his time. Preparing nourishing and appetizing meals for 750 howling stomachs every day is enough to drive anyone crazy. The iob has apparently not affected our fine lunchroom staff in that manner. They work hard to please us, and we appreciate it. MR. DANIEL WEBSTER, MR. WILMER SMITH, and MR, FRANK LOVELACE, our conscientious custodians are in a class all to themselves when it comes to keeping our new building in A-number-one condition They perform a difficult task in a first rate manner. ,- A , 2I 4 .Q Mrs. Major is pouring a cup of tea for her newly- acquired husband, Jim. During the football season the band pre- sented a variety of timely shows at the half. The musical and tableau production of Nightbeat, assisted by the Cruiser drill team, reached a climax in halftime enter- tainment. Homecoming provided a thrill for the band when its candidate, Wanda Dean, was crowned queen. Musical experience for band m e m b e r s ranged from the marches of football season to contest music of the spring and included playing accompaniment for a community sing at Christmas. Though Lakeland led at the half, the strong Eagle defense held the Dreadnaughts in the sec- ond half. Next the Dreadnaughts traveled to Tampa where they suffered defeat at the hands of the Jefferson Dragons. The game ended in a 44-44 tie, but the final score was 50-48 in favor of the Dragons. The Dreadnaughts finally broke their hard luck streak by downing the Hillsborough Terriers in an overtime by a score of 59 to 58. Jerry Novak and Peyton Montgomery led the locals with a combined score of 36 points. On December l8 and 19, the Dread- naughts made a victory tour through Day- tona Beach by trouncing the Seabreeze Sandcrabs 60 to 33. This was their worst defeat in several years. The following night they added insult to iniury by defeating Mainland 37 to 28. Although getting off to a slow start, they have improved steadily and are expected to finish with a satisfac- tory season.
