I'm a most rare and wonderful spirit with a truly imposing name. You see, I'm the Spirit of Lakeland High School. It's funny I've never had a nickname, but l've meant so many fine things to so many people over the years that it just never was suitable to be friv- olous about me. This is a very special year to me. probably the most important one of my whole life. It frightens me to realize that this is the last year I shall live in this old building that has been my home for twenty-six marvel- ous years. Next year l shall be in a brand-new, shiny-sparkling building, and I may not like it at all. It will be my home, though, and I shall stand for the same high ideals there that I've always upheld here. Cant you see, then, what an important HIGHLANDER this is? It must be a complete and enduring record of this, my final year. May it mean as much to you as it does to me. V . ' 1 X6 ,af g f 4. GEORGE JOHNSON, who teaches world geography and math, is a native of Brier Hill. Pennsylvania. His leisure hours are spent tinkering in his workshop or amusing his baby daughter. Georgia. In the new building he hopes to see lounges provided for the teachers and for the students to use in their free moments. It is hard to believe that MISS EUNICE KEEN. bustling about the library in her customary brisk manner, has been L,H.S. librarian for sixteen years. Any student who asks her for help will find that his needs become her primary concern, and she will not stop until the deed has been accomplished. Despite her associations with all 1700 of them. Miss Keen likes best about her job her contacts with the students. MISS REBECCA KEITH is back at L.H.S. after taking a year's leave of absence to obtain her M.A. degree at F.S.L'. Teaching American history leaves her little time for her hobby, reading. To Miss Keith. the ideal student is loyal to his school and all its activities, an enthusiastic participant in several things, working to the best of his ability in the classroom. A rather peculiar combination of subjects-typewriting, office practice and Bible-keeps MRS. EULA LASTINGER leaping from one train of thought to another. Almost the entire school de- pends upon the fine secretarial work done by her office practice class where the work is not only under Mrs. Lastinger's direction, but much of the actual doing is by her. Two sons keep her busy outside of school. Advisor to the S.G.A. has assumed an important role in MR. WILLIAM LAWRENCES routine. Although not the highest ranking team in the state, they had a reputation in the Big Ten for their pluck- iness and spirit. Incidentally, Coach L.L. Nurmi Nelson is completing his twenty- fifth year in the profession. Kneeling: COACHES-jack Deedrick, L. L. Nelson and jack Barker. Standing: COACHES-Joe Varju and John Staples. SPORTLIGHTS When the pigskin prognosticators gazed into the crystal ball of football fortune prior to the advent of the 1951 season, they could visualize only a large, gaping crack in the Lakeland Dreadnaughts, sphere of influence. However, refusing to bow before the predestined fate, Coach Nurmi Nelson and his able assistants molded a gridiron machine from the seemingly countless fragments that proved a strong and spirited threat to all comers. Compiling a season that surpassed the most faithful fan's dizziest dreams, the '51 Dreadnaughts baffled even the experts. The Lakelanders set the tempo for their campaign in the opener by beating the clock to tie Hillsborough in a Tampa thriller, 13-13. Despite a.downpour that dampened the following Friday's home opener, L. H. S. mudded to a 1-i-6 victory over Gainesville and followed by tipping jefferson at Bryant Stadium, 16-13, in a game that marked the conclusion of a nine-year rivalry with the Dragons. Trekking to West Palm Beach, Nelson's Navy whipped the Wildcats under wraps by 20-6 and continued their relentless rush with a breezy 34-O rout of Haines City's stingless Hornets. Visiting St. Petersburg finally turned the tide with a desperation pass play and extra point for a vital 14-13 Big Ten triumph before the year's largest outpouring. Not to be denied, Lakeland rebounded with a revengeful 34-0 blast at Plant in the Homecoming encounter. Fort Lauderdales keyed-up Flying L's then put a stranglehold on the Dreadnaughts' winning ways with a 13-13 knot on a field of mire in the coastal city. Orlando followed by dealing the season's sole decisive defeat, an 18-7 Thanksgiving Eve classic win over an injury-riddled L. H. S. eleven at Bryant Stadium. Playing in the jacksonville Gator Bowl in their finale, the Dreadnaughts became the year's only conference victim of defending champion Landon as the extra-point bugaboo stopped them short for the fourth time, 21-20. i QQ. f phi' A W Qin 2 L' e Q Rx ' is M1 i 'tv- FW A,,. .. . - .. 1 ,,4,3-v- Ns gl , gf.. , , ., ' 3 s f 4- ,-ww' .CMV V . . 1-N Q 'iff-LMXL' pw' - T 1, Y avi-:a,f, av , , J, ,, ,A -- 1-3.
