T. HARPER W GEORGE PEACQU I ,Mw 'im KENNETH Mourz Y. ' EARL KELLY F Ixull ATF E 60 To start out this year, the set-up looked a little better than last year's. The senior players made up most ot the line, with some good substitutes in the line and on the bench. Even at that, tew people thought they could win more than halt the games. ln the opening game with Ocala on September 20th, the Dreadnaughts met the strongest team tor a tirst game that they've had to in many years. But by two touchdowns, both through tackle, they came through a I2-O victory with no serious damage. Then a new trick otiense gave the home team a 33-O decision over the boys trom F. M. A., September 27th. Still at home, the Dreadnaughts took the reward ot win- ning over Winter Haven, in the tirst county game. Three touchdowns, one in the tirst quarter, one in the second, the third in the tourth, with one con- version, gave the Dreadnaughts a I9-O score. Playing hosts to their tirst Big Ten club this season, the locals evened up last year's bout with the Purple l-lurricanes ot Gainesville by a 20-O win. Two plays through right guard and a blocked punt gave Lakeland the game. Everybody held their breath when the Dreadnaughts went to Plant City October I8th as the dark horse ot the evening. One touchdown was made on a tirst-quarter tumble and the other through line plunging through to a I2-O win. On November 4th, the locals pulled through a I2-O victory over the Hillsborough Terriers in the roughest game ot the season thus tar. The first touchdown was a 4 l , . LS X GENE ROBERTS JOHN BATES BILLY STILLWELL FILL continuation of play started by the kick-off and the second touchdown was made by playing from the kick-off of the second half. Up to now, the Dreadnaughts had not only not lost a game, but hadn't even been scored on: so when they were visitors to Clearwater on Armistice, it was for blood l The home team barely came out with a 9-6 score, the touchdown and conversion from the kick-off, and the safety in the second quarter. The Crimson's touchdown came by a drive in the last minutes of play. Everybody wants to forget the November 22nd trip to Sarasota as far as the game goes, even if Lakeland did win by 7-O. A more pleasant memory was that of the special train that took some 600 fans to the game. After such a splendid season, the Thanksgiving game with Orlando power- house was a bit disappointing. Orlando scored on a forward pass ten seconds before the end of the third quarter. The usual closing game with Bartow again gave them the county championship by a I9-7 win over the local boys. The Yellow Jackets outplayed Lakeland all the way. The only Dreadnaught score was a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. The Destroyer game with Battery D of the National Guard ended with a decision for the high school boys. The Polk Seniors vs. Hillsborough Seniors game on December 20th was a benefit game for crippled children, and it came out in a 20-O victory for Polk County. ,.4.f.., .., Y ..
