Your effectiveness as a teacher will be judged by your success in preparing the youth of to-day for roles of responsibility in industry, education, statesmanship and the professions in the highly complex world in which he will live to-morrow. I trust that you will seek to establish sound educational objectives compatible in content and pedagogic method with the rapidly changing conditions under which we live. In keeping with the nature and the progress of scientific achievement, your authority will at times be questioned and the traditional classroom atmosphere may have to give way to more modern concepts which take into consider- ation changing notions regarding learning theory and greater attention to individual differences. I have every confidence that as truly professional teachers you will accept the challenge and will face the future with assurance, determined to add your contribution to the substantial achievements made by the great teachers of the past. I wish you success in your endeavours. Alien County Publifl LKWW , 900 Webster Street - 3, ,HQ PO Box 2270 46801 2270 wi f G avis Fort Wayne' IN - Minister of Education November 28, 1968. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE WILLIAM A. WEST Your year at the college has been a major crossroad in which you have set directions for your future. My earnest hope is that your decision will prove right both for yourself and for the society you will serve. As a staff we are going to expect great things of you because of the fine promise you have shown. Your many indications of maturity, sense of responsibility, and balance indicate that you should be able to make a rich contribution to the growth and welfare of others. Although we hope that you will look back upon this year as one of the richest in your experience, we trust too that you will not consider it the final preparation for the work you are to undertake. To keep up to our changing world you must never stand still academically or professionally We hope you will continue to be aware that many ideas are being questioned today - and rightly so. However, look for a foundation of fundamental truths rather than supporting change for the sake of change alone. Be prepared to stand up for a principle that is worth defending, but let the size of the issue be your guide. May you enjoy in the future all the success and happiness which you truly deserve. VICE- PRINCIPAL D. H. BOTLY It seems but yesterday that you, the students of 1968-69, began your training in the profession of teaching, and, indeed, the time has been all too short. I know that you realize that in a one-year course, it is just not possible to become a fully competent, first-rate teacher. However, if you have begun to develop a philosophy of education, if you have discerned the qualities in yourself that are most likely to benefit the pupils who will be in your charge, if you have come to recognize characteristics within you that may be detrimental in your classroom if not corrected or subdued, if you have learned some basic principles of teaching and of learning, then you may be on the road to a rewarding career. It has been a pleasure to work with the class of '69 and I say this with all sincerity. I wish you happiness and success in the years ahead. DEA OF WO E A. M. McKENZIE One of your major responsibilities as a teacher is to be aware of the Worth of every individual in your care. Such recognition will affect not only the day by day treatment of your charges but also your long range hopes for their future. You must recognize the challenge of preparing them to find their place in the world of work. Strive to give them a sound foundation of knowledge and skills as you attempt to lead them towards a super- structure of searching and constructive thinking. Along with this, aim constantly at developing an attitude of adaptability to prepare them to fit into a world of innovation and change. Such a background will enable your pupils to earn their share of the material things of this world which make it possible for rnan to live with dignity. Remember, however, that you cannot dignify that which is not worthy of honour. Your efforts will have been in vain unless you can instill in your pupils the fundamental spiritual qualities which can ennoble an entire society. Such values cannot be taught - they can only be caught. I can give you no greater wish than this - that you find them first in yourself and then let them permeate all your work. S B59 'Q ii 1 EW' . STUDENT COUNCIL BOB MORGAN PRESIDENT May I first extend to the faculty and the student body, the appreciation of the council for their co-operation and support throughout the year. May I also commend, on behalf of the students, those who have shown such admirable leadership qualities in the many organizations and activities of the past year, especially the editor and staff of the yearbook. As an adult and a parent, this year at the college has reaffirmed my faith in the youth of today. l challenge you all to maintain and further the ideals which prompted you to undertake this profession. Because of the work and effort put forward by the leaders of the Athletic Council, sports activity flourished. I am most appreciative of the co- operation received from the masters and also the high standard of sportsmanship exhibited by every student in the school. This year I proudly commend the achievements of our basketball team, men's and women's hockey teams and men's and women's baseball teams. While we may have looked ragged in dress, our team spirit and enthusiasm overcame all minor deficiencies. All the other sports such as badminton, baseball, bowling, curling, floor hockey, gymnastics, skiing, tennis and volleyball, were well attended. Through these the exemplary qualities of everyone at Teachers' College obtained for us the admiration of the Lakeheaders. Sports Day and the Tabloid Meet were, to use a secondary school expression, a bash! Above all I wish to congratulate all the members of the Athletic Council for the many hours of work put forward. It was through their work that these events were made possible. I wish to sincerely thank you for all our achievements this year. The qualities that you show and hold will carry you a long way in your profession. SERVICES STUDY CLUB EXECUTIVE The Ontario Hospital Study Group with its regular 20 - 25 members met every other Tuesday evening at the Ontario Hospital. After our first gather- ing with the patients any uneasi- ness as to the patients' reactions and so on were changed in an atmosphere of friendship and interaction. There was a variety of activities for our meetings which included panels, discussion groups, films, guest speakers, recreation Cpool, bowlingi, a talent show and dancing after which each session was followed with refreshments supplied by the hospital. This provided an oppor- tunity for the members of the group and the patients to socialize and for some it was a deepening of friendship. This we all found 0 be very rewarding. FUN CLUB EXECUTIVE This was an interesting and rewarding Club that too few people attended. At each meeting we sang, played games, danced and had refreshments. The climax of the year was a formal dance when the Study Club visited. How many people are as warm and open and eager to make friends as those patients are? Not enough! Those who went to the Fun Club gained invaluable experience and in most ways were given more than they gave. YOUTH CENTRE EXECUTIVE This year the Youth Centre Club consisted of sixteen mem- bers from the College. Four mem- bers of the Club were hired by the Parks Board as staff at the Centre. We have attempted to and succeeded in gaining the trust of many kids who have in the past mistrusted and despised teachers. We have played, talked and helped many of these youngsters who are almost friendless as far as adults are concerned. We all feel that we have made many accomplish- ments with these kids this year. BOWLING CLUB EXECUTIVE This year, the bowlers rnet on Sunday nights at Galaxy Lanes in Fort William from 9:00 - 11:00. Due to the set-up of teaching weeks, etc. we did not bowl every Sunday, and consequently teams were not established. Bowling was an enjoyable social event for most of the stu- dents who participated. Our top bowlers were: WOMEN: Joyce Kryluk, Dianne Tienhara, Joan Kapitan. The choir society was unique in at least one re- spect, in that it boasted the largest membership of any club in the school. It might also be said that member participation was excellent. I know we all enjoyed the get-togethers and learned a great deal about music through the efforts of Mr. Kleven and those who pro- vided accompaniment and assistance. As president of the society it has been my privilege to be associated with a wonderful group of people. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to them for their co-operation throughout the year. Our primary purpose was the de- velopment of stronger powers of concentration, relaxation and memo- ry as Well as a higher degree of self- confidence through an increased control of our own mental and physi- cal faculties. As these pictures indicate we had a lot of fun with Applied Hypnosis. At the same time we enjoyed an excellent learning experience. Ray Carlson ,f w.......... I would like to thank everyone for the honour of being Valedictorian for the Class of 1969. I once heard the term 'mixed emotions' defined in a rather unusual way. It went soemthing like this-- 'mixed emotion' is the feeling you get when you see your brand new car going over a cliff - with your mother-in-law at the wheel! This evening's festivities are creating within each of us that sarne feeling of mixed emotions, and for a variety of good reasons. After a year of hard work we are looking forward to a good rest, and justifiably so. However, this happy feeling is tempered to a certain degree. We are leaving behind us an unforgettable period in our lives, during which we have honed to a finer edge those virtues which are basic prerequisites of a life as a teacher- among those being our degree of maturity, our sense of responsibility, and of course, dedication. It has been an interesting, informative, challenging, and soul-searching year--but short! Who actually believed Mr. West's warning last fall that the year would be over before we knew it? We are leaving behind us a host of new friends, many of whom have become very close. In many instances, students have found very close friends in the masters them- selves. We will miss their guidance and support. We must also feel a certain degree of apprehension as we leave Lakehead Teachers College. This year has been marked by a major upheaval in the educational system of Ontario-indeed, that of North America. At one time teachers emerged from their training feeling that they knew most of the answers. Today, however, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there are no real answers. This leaves us with a tremendous amount of responsibility. This year man hopes to set foot, for the first time, on the moon, --that hazardous and alien planet. This year, we also plan to step into a rather new and hazardous area of endeavour. Now it is not likely, that in our lifetime, man will have any lasting effect on the moon itself, but, can we say the same thing about our profound effect on the children with whom we will become so deeply involved. Let's face it, today man knows more about the moon than anyone of us here knows about the inner workings of a child! It is imperative then, that we enter this new world with an alert, open mind, and are ready to respect these children as people. As well as this, we must be careful not to stagnate on this new planet. We must not let its hazards and pressures turn us away, or make us slaves. This new world must be as this past year has been--a jumping-off point towards other worlds for con- uerm . q It is as true in teaching as in any other field of human endeavour that to stand still is to fall behind. Let us not lose sight of our objectives nor the desire to reach them. So once again, to all of you, who, along with me, are elxperiencing these 'mixed emotions', I say 'thank you for this tremendous privilege, and wish the very best of fortune in your educational career. To Mr. West and his very capable staff at 'Mission ControI', I wish to express, on behalf of the students, our deepest thanks and sincerest appreciation for all you have done. In closing then, I will leave you this thought: this is not the end -- neither is it the beginning of the end I-- perhaps then, it is the end of the beginning ! THANK YOU EPILOGUE TO THE CLASS OF '69 OR ENVOI You are setting out in the exciting world of teaching - a world of love, learning and life, for that's what teaching is all about. Revel in this love, this love of the world about you. Never lose your love of wisdom above all. And let your students share your loves. Make these joys infectious. Dare to involve yourself in them and commit yourself. Dare to experiment. Cultivate the spirit of creative thinking with your students Like them, be the intense learner always. Don't be afraid of change, to change. Learning is a process of change. Think, read, contemplate, travel. Get and give as many experi- ences as you can. Be the inspiring consultant rather than the intimi- dating instructor. For a teacher educates by what he is as Well as by what he says. Be sensitive and respectful of each student's dignity, his needs, his emotions and his aspirations. Be honest and sincere with him. ln- crease your empathy for him. Help him develop a 'sense of self'. Don 't be afraid to climb mountains. Enquire for truth, the just, the good. Shun hypocrisy and pedantry. Foster the 'humanitos' of Cicero, and the 'arete' of the Greeks. . And don't be afraid when your students have matured into your own rivals and critics. You were a fellow human that helped them to learn, live and love. And that's what progress is all about anyway.
