ONTARIO MINISTER OF EDUCATION As Minister of Education, I am very pleased to welcome the graduates of the Lakehead Teachers' College to the teaching profession in Ontario. In but a few months you will meet your own class and you will begin to exercise the teaching skills you have attained and use the academic knowledge you have acquired. The world which your students will face in their own future and for which you will help to prepare them will demand the very best that our youth can offer. It should go without saying that the same world will demand the best that our teaching staff can offer. It is my hope that you will never cease to grow intellectually and professionally as you serve in our schools and that you will take advantage of the many courses offered for practising teachers to upgrade your professional status . You carry with you as you begin your teaching the very best wishes of the staff of your C'ollege and the Department of Education. I hope your days as a teacher will be satisfying and rewarding and that you will be both dedicated to your task and enthusiastic about your career. Good fortune go along with you! MM? Ms William G. Geoffrey Chaucer As the word implies, with your graduation you have taken a big step in the process in becoming a teacher. Now I wish I could give you some easy recipe that would ensure your growth and success in the profession. But the picture is complex, for no two teachers are alike. There are, however, some qualities common to the best. The truly great teacher combines academic scholarship with classroom capabilities. The former must come first, but it's mere possession does not make the master. Be constantly aware of the methods by which we learn, and strive to develop techniques peculiar to yourself by which you can best cultivate the process of learning in your charges. You will need a maturity of outlook, for schools live not in splendid isolation, but in a social, economic, and human climate. Your maturity of outlook, however, should never rob you of the understanding of the mind of the child, with his needs and hopes and fears. May you also combine an enthusiasm for the task with a zeal for living. You must be of the world if you are to prepare people for the world. Finally, and most significantly, your worth will depend upon your desire to serve the children, to serve the com- munity, to serve the nation, and to serve world society. In no better way could you serve yourself, for what you are will count for more than what you do. Wm . A . Zigyflf' . rizgzf f.?5S.i7?iI-' The decade of the 1960's is running out. It is a decade marked by dramatic changes in education. It is a decade that brings promise of more remarkable developments yet to come. Although there has always been a change in education, it must be obvious, to even the casual observer, that the rate of change has been increasing in an astonishing manner over the past ten years. Surely, as new teachers in the exhilarating climate of educational progress, you will want to participate in the experimentation and in the new procedures which are a part of the modern school. By all means, this is what you should do. However, may I urge you that you examine new developments critically? Accept ideas which will help your pupils but remember that there are many educational developments from the past which are still sound and which will bring benefit to pupils even in this modern age. As you begin your careers in this exciting era, I Wish you great success and happiness. D . H . Botly, Vice-Principal. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveller, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowthg Then took the other, as just as fair And having perhaps the better claim.. . I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages henceg Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference. from: THE ROAD NOT TAKEN - Robert Frost May the future prove that you took the right road in deciding to follow the path of education as your chosen profession. Closely bound with all your aspirations, this choice will have major bearing on the sense of fulfilment that you achieve in your lifetime, and will fashion the contribution that you make to the society in which you live. Our months together at the College have taken you only through the entrance of the road. The years ahead will present the constant necessity of making further choices of which fork to follow. Man demands change, so education cannot remain static either in its content or in its method. Some- times you should be blazing new trails: sometimes you should follow the old. Neither can be entirely good or bad. The greatest danger lies in following one to the exclusion of the other. So strive to try the new while recognizing the value of the old. Years from now, when you look back over your work, have no regrets over the roads which you may have explored fruitlessly. The very exploration will have helped you to find others which led to hilltops providing new vistas of the puzzling world of man. A.IVI. J. McKenzie, Dean of Women. ' 6- Mr. S.P. ' Presidenfs Message I' . f Each of us through the years has developed certain traits of character which will remain a part of us for the rest of our lives. We will all maintain individual personalities, but we should each hope- fully strive for good qualities. Initiative, which prompts us to do the right thing without being asked or told, and willingness to work for ourselves and others are two of these good qualities. These assets will help us to become a part of our societyg Without them we can only look in from the outside. In the past year, I think We have come to recognize the need for this initiative and Willingness to Work. It has become a professional necessity. Being a part of society is not being a sports hero or an organized leader. lt is just to take sincere interestg if you are interested you will ensure yourself of a more useful and fulfilled spot in society. Those Without these qualities just do their job and no more. They are the people who seldom have anything to do and dislike that which they do have to do. They are malicious critics, freely condemning but seldom reforming or constructing. Their future is indeed bleak in this profession. ln the year we have spent at L. T.C. l have seen such a transform- ation of the majority of our students as would seem almost incredible. ln so short a time, what a mature, professional atmosphere has developed! Yes, we share a great deal responsibility in the near future a great deal has been entrusted to us. But ladies and gentlemen, seeing you as you are, l am confident that We can do the job Well. l would like to thank the Council for their initiative and Willingness to carry out their duties Well for you, and our staff advisors, Miss Mclienzie, Mr. Botly, and Mr. lileven for their invaluable and much appreciated services. Ladies and gentlemen, l sincerely wish you all good fortune in your new profession in the hard years ahead. But for all the time the journey has already taken, how we have needed every second of it in order to learn what the road passes -by. Today not only marks the end of our year at Lakehead Teachers' College but also marks the beginning of a new challenge. We bombarded Teachers' College in September as total strangers and are now leaving our Alma Mater as close friends united by a common desire and profession. And what is this profession? Professional status we are told doesn't fall like manna from heaven . Education is the cultivation of the mind and formation of character. Native intelligence alone, although important, does not make us teachers The mind and character of the teacher have more influence than books on the mind and character of the pupil. As prospective teachers we must have the capacity to be sincere, to genuinely care about others, and to communicate this love without a possessiveness that intrudes on the privacy of the individual. Our schools are devoted to guiding the child to right understanding attitudes and habits in relation to his fellow-man, to nature, to self, and to God. All of this demands an intuitive resourcefulness, a complete acceptance of self, an abiding faith and a right philosophy of life. We are grateful to our principal Mr. West, and to each Master. Each has uniquely helped us on our way to becoming professional teachers. The weeks of practice teaching, the private interviews, the words of encouragement, the experiences encountered--all have contributed to the discovery of a way of working with individuals which seems to have so much constructive potential. We must examine our procedures next September according to the standards given to us, to ensure that we do not neglect the children whom we teach. Let us show them that we do care, that we are interested in them and in what they do. Let us observe their progress day by day and not just at report card time. And more important let us be ready to help, to guide, to lead, and to love! Why this emphasis? it is simply this, what the child IS is far more important than what he knows or does. We have a challenge and we have a dream that demands involvement with the whole child. Our methodology must always be vital, up-to-date, and flexible if our children are to be properly nurtured by the food of wisdom and truth. .-X little sorrow may be experienced today. While we are leaving Lakehead Teachers' College--some part of the College will always remain with us, some part of ourselves will always remain here. Every second of this year has been needed in order to learn what the road passes-by. Night is drawing nigh-- For all that has been--Thanks! To all that shall be asked--Yes! We look forward to welcoming you as full statutory members when you assume your first teaching positions in our public schools of Ontario next September. You will be a select group as you will be entering our professional organization of FWTAO during 1968, our Golden Anniversary year. We may not mark the event with special material gifts such as are customarily awarded to, let us say, the millionth visitor to Expo 67, etc., but we do have something of more intrinsic value to offer - professional status and protection. This is a privilege which was not easily won by our brave founders, and which, l must admit, is sometimes taken for granted in these more affluent times. Privileges bring responsibilities though. You are entering the teaching profession at one of the most exciting but also one of the most demanding stages in the history of education. l urge you to resolve to meet these responsibilities with foresight and youthful enthusiasm. Determine to lay a strong foundation by continuing your studies and up-grading your qualifications. Try to be well-informed and abreast of the new trends in education which are changing so rapidly. This all sounds like a tall order, and it isp but do not let it intimidate you. The profession needs you. FWTAO will help you. Once again - welcome and best wishes. Annabell lVIcNaughton, President. Anten, IVI.D William Morgan Clifford Lindeman CITY CLERK: Miss Lillian Dennis RESULTS ARE WHAT COU T Considerable discussion has occurred recently on the strengths and weak- nesses of Education in Ontario. Educators tend to dwell on the strengths and detractors on the weaknesses. There is no disagreement on the importance of education, nor on its place in economic growth and development. The disagreement seems to focus on the results of education. Educators look at results from the inside, tending to evaluate results in terms of educational programs inside the system, employers and many parents evaluate results in terms of what the student can produce and can do outside the system. Both are right within their own framework, but perhaps employers and parents are more right because the student will be outside a lot longer than he is inside. Any evaluation of results that ignores certain fundamental and minimum requirements of every literate person is open to serious criticism. These requirements include the ability to express oneself in speech and in writing in simple straightforward English, to read and comprehend the printed language, to perform certain basic computations, and to possess a grounding in the geography and history of his environment. The degree to which each requirement is met should be determined by the level at which the student leaves the system. Any system which provides less than these fundamentals, no matter what the achievements within the system, is somewhat less than adequate. TEEP ROCK IRO MINES LTD ATIKOKAN, ONTARIO G.R. DUNCAN 8: CO.
