A. wssr hast VW ..-seem k-1-- , -.-- - '1 f'?1srw'4-Irvane-.-sdi9 t ' MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL As we seek solutions to our most urgent problems, we turn to education for help and guidance. Con- sequently, in this time of breath-taking technological change and social upheaval, Society needs the leadership of dedicated teachers whose minds are idealistic but whose feet are realistic. Science has been in the forefront of our lives, carrying us through a rapid transition from the horse and buggy to satellites in space. These sudden developments have provided the world with the tools for great good or tremendous evil. The problem created is whether we shall use these powerful forces for self-destruction or for the betterment of mankind. Man, not Science, is actually responsible for the problem, and he alone can provide the answer. The solution will be found not in further scientific discoveries, but in the development and communi- cation of those ideas and ideals which will lead every person to treat his neighbour as brother, regard- less of race or creed. Such an enlightened mass decision is clearly impossible without wide-spread individual acceptance. The movement can start in your classroom. True, as a teacher you must enlighten and discipline the minds of your pupils as you provide them with a rich fund of knowledge. However, the survival of the world will depend not upon knowledge alone, but upon the ability of large numbers of people to make realistic choices in the light of adequate information. Hence, your principle task in the interests of world society is to lead your students to think clearly, to analyse logically, to judge fairly, and to decide intelligently. Here, then, is a challenge to you as a teacher that is great and noble. May you find the wisdom and stature to meet it! 1965 Adema? S , .73 w Qs, x x . lf. You may ask yourself such questions as, How much progress have l made this year in ' the direction of my goa1sT ' and What new measures may be called for in the year ahead? X and death. F. W. l-IYDER Growth is a basic principle of Nature. Civilizations, social institutions, and the individuals comprising them, are all subject to the principle of growth. When growth stops in a plant, a mind, or a civilization, the results are the same: decay Growth demands changeg growth demands experimentation and discovery. The whole forward thrust of society is brought about through experimentation and adap- tation of new ideas, coupled with the recognition of, and the reliance on those traditions, institutions, or practices of the past that have proven worthy, indispen- sible, or immutable. There is emerging in every growing person a responsible entity which is capable of initiating action and having an effect upon the larger encompassing life process. May your part in this life process be worthy, effective, and satisfying. 1965 DEA OE WOME MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF WOMEN When the method and discipline of knowledge are added to talent, the result is usually altogether outstanding. Cicero ln choosing your career, you must have been influenced by a feeling that God had given you, in some measure, a natural talent for teaching. The year's work at the College has provided rich opportunity for you to explore and develop that capacity. Bear in mind always that your graduation certifies not that you have become the perfect teacher, but that with your aptitude and training, you have shown rich promise. To show promise is encouragingg not to fulfil that promise would be tragic. Look then upon your graduation, not as a mark of something completed, but as a mark of something begun. Simply to use your talent without enriching it is stagnation. Set yourself for the years ahead a standard of excellence in knowledge and artistry. In the pursuit of that excellence you may never reach perfection, but you will succeed in wedding your natural talent to the true craftsmanship that distinguishes the artisan from the technician. 1965 M. As teachers we should firmly resolve to expend all our PR E S E physical, spiritual and mental strength to effect by our teach- ing, by our convictions and by our example a desire for know- ledge ---- a knowledge of God and His infinite love for all Terence McPherson . . . men as equal creations of a living God. We must always search for the Truth. As scholars we must continually strive to broaden our views and concepts. We should want to know and experience life, to find its truths, pro- mises and meanings. The more that we are and know, the more that we can be and teach. As the creation reflects the creator, we must, then, be what we want to create in our pupils. Let us attempt, then, to achieve noble and necessary aims, and let us begin today. We all recognize the very significant parteach Master has played in our education and in our lives. I am confident that this awareness will be indicated by the re -echoing of the words thank you . On behalf of the students' council I wish to thank all the students for the privilege, honour and pleasure of being of some help to both you and the college. A, MARTIN B, A, , M. Ed. , INSPECTOR OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS CANADIAN MOTEL, FORT WILLIAM, MAY 20, 1965 It is indeed inspiring to see this fine group of young people - teaching contracts in hand - ready to enter our schools next september. One hundred years ago, the teacher's lot was not a happy one - if we consider the list of rules posted in a New York School for the benefit of new recruits in 1372. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's sessions. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courdng, purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly. After ten hours in school, the teachers should spend the remaining time reading, the Bible or other good books. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool halls or public halls, or gets shaved in a barbershop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intentions, integrity and honesty. With the end ofthe school year at hand, widi contracts already negotiated, with the thoughts of examinations a few days off, and with the prospect of a dance following your dinner, I am mindful of the fact that an address at this time is a rather unimportant event. Yet, it is with sincerity of purpose and with a sense of humility that I speak tonight in hopes that a few words might linger long enough to germinate in the minds of rhe Graduating Class of Lakehead Teachers' College, 1965. Mayl request that you do not rest on your ratings, Often students, who have B and C ratings, blossom during their years of teaching into first rate teachers. Sometimes l have seen students with high ratings slip when they are on their own. lt amazes me tu see you young teachers enroll at the Lakehead Teachers' College in September and in eight short months, the staff of the College has prepared you for the teaching profession. Perhaps you amaze your College Masters with the good work done in your first year's teaching. Members of staffs at Teathurs' Colleges are much like the country parson in the familiar story, told by the late Dr. Althouse, ofthe rar which was disturbing the thurth sermon, or perhaps I should say the driver of die car was disturbing the service. lt was a hot day - and the -,hurch windows were open - so the blasts of recurrent profanity with which the driver pun-,mated his efforts to start the stubborn mar were clearly audible within the church - and were obviously more interest ing to the congregation man the words of the sermon which the parson was delivering. Annoy-ed at these disturbing rnterrupuons, the preacher strode down the aisle - out through the open door - followed by must of his flock. Reproachfully he addressed the driver, That's no way to talk, brother. That language won't get you anywhere, And the perspiring, frustrated driver retorted with, Well, Rev'rend, if you know better words, you use 'em. It was a challenge not to be ignored. Dropping to his knees in the red dust ofthe road, the parson prayed that the good Lord would send peace and repose to the spirit of this poor, afflicted servant, and would restore order to the engine of the decrepit tar. Hr: prayed long and earnestly and with a note of bravado - rather than confidence. Then he arose, dusted off his knees, and said to the driver, Now step on dat starter. The driver tomplicd. The engne caught, sputtered briefly, then roared noisily and the car wavered away down the road. The preathcr gazed after it, open mouthed. Then he remarked simply and fervently, Well, l'll he damned. Nu doubt, the Masters at Teachers' Colleges often feel the same. The student, in whom he has full confidence, of course, applied methods in whrth he has equal tonfidence, and the combination works to his complete amazement. May you go out next year and so amaze your Principal and Staff. Make no mistake about it. School teaching is more than an occupation - more than a profession. I am one of me old school boys who believe that it is a calling and those who cannot hear the pall, had better sharpen their ears. No matter how higi salaries may go, land I do not think we have reached the peak in them yetj those who are in teaching merely for financial reward will never be well repaid. l really cannot say how much money would be required to compensate a teacher for tontinuing, to render his distinctive service, unless that service is something he would will- ingly do for nothing if he could afford the luxury of working without pay. A teacher who teaches only or mainly for his salary is bound to be unhappy as the legendary oboe player who hated music. May I pause, at this point, to ask why you have selected teaching as your Job - your calling in the first place. '1 former teather revealed what we are to see in an unforgettable way. This man had been a notable teacher. During me final years of his career, he hetnme seriously ill. He was literally dying on his feet. When he was urged to spare himself, he exclaimed, Give up - A teacher can't give upg he .,an't miss the opportunity that is his alone. The Greatest Teacher of all Said, I am come that you migtt have lift: and have it more abundantly. - That's it - Lhat's the teacher's Job, to make life better, fuller, more satisfying, more useful, not to preach a better life hereafter, but to make life better here and now. ls it too mu-.h to say that only the realization of sueh a purpose can make the teacher really a member of the profession. May I make a plea - that you will be loyal and faithful to the teaching profession. lt is most unfortunate that the entire profession is ridiculed and dis- credited betause of the carelessness and ofthe incompetence of a fcw. What Lode of ethics should the new teacher take with him on his first Job 39-Ta VV C! You will have many happy moments during your careers. These, you will treasure. I recall, one day, about ten years ago when l was a principal at that time, I had gone to school early to do some work. lt was one of those days, in which everything seemed to go wrong . Just when I had reached the boiling point of frustration, a little voice called to me from the hall. Martin, we have a note for you. Standing just outside the office were two blonde sisters, one in Grade I, one in Grade III, and an equally blond brother in Kindergarten. Dear Mr. Marton p I likgyou so much. If you die, I'll remember you. You are the nicest and sweetest principal I ever had. My brother likes you and so does Janis. We cannot for- get you. Love, Barbara Janis and Roger. Tucked away in my vault of memories was the sad occasion when five pupils and myself were required to act as pallbearers for one of our classmates. You will have similar memories to recall during your teaching careers. To those young people who feel that graduation from a Teachers' College - armed with an Interim Teaching Certificate marks the end of 14 or 15 years of formal schooling, may I say that this is the beginning. Far too many teachers seek to coast along without further study, or, at least, with a grudging minimum of it. Inevitably, these become dull, pompous, and petty minded - the kind of teachers whom you criticize - the kind of teachers whose example turns many of our brighter pupils away from the choice of teaching as a life's work. Make an inventory of your special teaching abilities and interests. Map out a plan of educational endeavour centered around these God -given talents. Young men, in particular, your course of action should include the acquisition of a university degree, At the same time, do not permit the acquisition of higher education to cause you to lose the common touch. Six years ago, while undertaking some postgraduate work, I made a survey to ascertain what were the greatest problems experienced by beginning teachers during the first year of teaching. This survey covered all of Northwestern Ontario. It was completed by new teachers and Inspectors. These difficulties were listed according to magnitude. The survey also requested suggestions for overcoming such problems. Some answers were quite humorous. Both the Inspectors and new teachers listed class control or discipline as the maior problem. I find that this problem of class control or lack of it is most difficult to remedy by the Inspector or Principal. What every young teacher must know is that only your personal power, your personal skill, your inimitable personality, and your teaching skills will hold a class. Disorder in a classroom is usually, with rare exception, the result of weakness in the teacher, This is hard for the young teacher to accept but that is one ofthe first truths you have to face. Inspectors and teachers were in agreement on the second greatest difficulty - preparation of the day's work. One Inspector pointed out that a minimum of thirty minutes preparation should be spent for a fifteen minute lesson. Another Inspector, with more than 25 years experience, suggested the following: Careful preparation of one's work from day to day, while not an assurance of a successful day, will, if one can follow the prepared plan, make for a more successful day than could be expected if one fails to plan. Apparently, some Inspectors felt that you beginners talk too much. This was mentioned frequently. Provision for the wide range of individual differences will be a problem. I-lave you ever seen a plant with its leaves curled upf' l-lave you watered it and watched the leaves spread out and open - fresh and greenP Almost as quick as the response of a child's mind to a teacher who knows how to nourish, how to love, and how to show kindness to the child. That best portion of a good man's life, His little nameless, unrememhered acu of kindness and love. Let me clear up any misunderstanding regarding the granting of Permanent Certificates. Your Interim Teaching Certificate is valid for five years, Upon completion of two years successful teaching, the School Inspector may recommend mat a Permanent Certificate be granted. It is not automatic. It is some- thing for which you have to work and to prove yourself. One quality required for a Permanent Certificate, in addition to your teaching ability, is that of a mature, professional attitude. Do not allow the name of School Inspector deter you from looking upon him as a friend. We have all been through the experience of setting out for the first time in the teaching profession. The six Inspectors, in our Department of Education office, are as anxious and as concerned as you are that your first year as a teacher will be a successful one. Let us have the opportunity of lending a hand when it is needed, Please look upon your Inspector as a friend. In a few short days, you will be leaving Lakehead Teachers' College. Under the care of a Principal, like Mr. West , you will be leaving with a sense of direction - which is not afforded to students of other colleges. May your work next year be so successful, as to amaze your Principal and his staff. A preacher, popular with his congregation, explained his success as the result of a silent prayer which he offered each time he took the pulpit. Lord, fill my mouth with worthwhile stuff, And nudge me when I've had enouytf' I have felt several nudges along the way. May I leave you with this thought tonight. Lord, who am I to teach the way, To little children day by day, So prone myself to go astray. I teach them knowledge, but I know I-low faint they flicker and how low The candles of my knowledge glow. I reach them power to will and do, But only now to learn anew My own great weakness thru and thru. I teach them love for all mankind And all God's creatures, but I find My love comes lagging far behind. Lord, if their guide I still must be, Oh, let the little children see The teacher leaning hard on Thee. .f ! X K ,Au---' X299 Q 24 iffcf fffffffiffw f .-fi 'K f.7'!1f,f,,f,',f ,. gf. Some psychologists say he is a substitute mother. Others say he is the tower of good ness that his pupils will imitate. To his students he is the man who will explain time and time again that E does not stand for excellent. To us, he is the man who must guide his pupils to the best of his ability. This brief and far from complete definition of a teacher brings to mind one impor- tant aspect of the profession that faces each of us. We have the priviledge of entering teaching at an explosive time. lt is a scientific fact that every ten years the amount of LYNDEN S. MCEACHERN knowledge in the world doubles. What more exciting challenge could we accept today that to know that we will nurture both the minds of our pupils and our own minds in a rapidly expanding era of discovery? We all realize that our two years or one of training, as the case may be, is only a small wave on the ocean that awaits us. Yer, l'm sure that we look forward to the challenge handed to us with confidence healthy respect and curiosity Like the eager student's mind stands ready for knowledge and understanding, so should the minds of each of us stand open to the continued experience and new learning we shall gain as years pass. For we must satisfy our own desire for more training and confidence as well as feed the embryo minds of the thousands of individuals we will guide, in centers across this vast province and perhaps beyond, in the upcoming years. Someone might ask, But where will all this accumulation of knowledge end? . We hope it never ends. We can draw solace in the fact that nothing is so elastic or infinite as the human mind. The more we are obliged to do, the more we are able to accomplish. lt is possible for a million dollar computor to blow a fuse and stop working. l've heard of minds growing flabby and minds growing rusty, but no one has ever head of a mind breaking down completely from too much knowledge. its intake possibilities are unlimited. Because of this simple fact, - I hope that all of us will remain scholars throughout our years. l have spoken so far with pride and confidence in the graduates assembled here and those who will follow us. We have built our careers, not primarily on the fact that we received six outstandings , but on more stable grounds. Our pro- fessional character is being built bit by bit, somewhat like Michelangelo's Fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. As with Michelangelo's work, we expect this development of character to be a labour of love and patience. In this work we have had the guidance of an excellent staff of masters, who have gone out of their way to help us. We have had the close camaraderie of our fellow classmates. We have had the unity of respect for the profession. And we have had, I believe the help of God. We only hope that the end result is as complete, true and beautiful as the Fesco was to the great master. So, we must never forget this most important lesson. That is, that we must help to mold thirty individual characters next year. How can we do it'f' Remember that you are human beings ......... and your pupils are human beings looking up to you, expecting and entitled to find, spiritual and moral qualities. We must engender scholasticism, industry, com- passion and genuine interest. Then add to these the most important asset, in my opinion, a sense of humour. Blend, and what do you get? The best from yourself, the best from your pupils. But the responsibility of accepting the challenge of our age, of trying to get the best from our pupils is ours, the graduates of Lakehead Teachers' College, l964-65. To you from stalwart hands We give the torch of learning, Be it yours to hold it high Striving to raise it higher. Comphments 8: Good Wrshes FILIPCVIC AND DUBINSKY BARRISTERS 8. SOLICITORS 131 N.
